As I attempt to finish my book in a timely manner, I keep telling myself to make pieces that are striking but simple, so I can keep things moving along quickly. Instead, I keep making paintings that have a million tiny rocks in them.
Seriously though, the real challenge to this piece was establishing and maintaining a sense of scale. Doing that is a combination of detail and relativity. All the tiny rocks and bits of snow help make the mountain seem large, but the foreground is actually d...

Hello my favorite people :)
I'm going to start promoting a big summer sale tomorrow and I wanted to give you an early heads up.
Everything is 20% off and there is a special Timed Edition print for Malahidael, Angel of Aries that is super super red. When I re-watched my work in progress video, I noticed a point where the piece was all start red and white and I thought it looked cool. So I actually spent a lot of time repainting it to look like that.

Holy crow! One of the darker pieces won the popular vote this month.
Technically, after a prolonged voting period, Asbeel tied for first but the majority of the comments were excitedly cheering it along so I'm breaking the tie and giving the people what they want. I've been fielding passionate requests for Af and Asbeel from dark art fans for a while, but the vocal minority has never managed to win out until now. Congrats you guys :)
This month, anyone subscribed before Jul...

Things are moving fast for our hero atop the mountain.
I love doing blue skies and outdoor scenes. It feels like a fitting contrast the super warm interior moment that I made for him last time.
This piece is giving me an opportunity to play with large scale outdoor environments again. Which is something I've been looking forward to doing ASAP.
Still working out some of the creative elements with the design at this point. Ideas on what I want to do with the face keep getting experim...

Starting in on Turiel, I really wanted to expand in the ideas behind him. Wealth and power are things that so many of us desire, and yet their corrupting influence is so evident. In stories, you see this contradiction brought to life with lonely kings and greedy dragons.
The mountain is a beautiful thing to behold, but always treacherous.

As you might know, I'm heavily inspired by the aesthetics of games and shows from Japan in the 80s-90s. That means I also tend to enjoy the modern stuff that also calls back to that era, especially indie games.
Over and over again I've thought about making bits of fan art for my favorite games but I keep ignoring it in favor of more important work. The other night, I was messing around while I was on a long video chat and this ended up coming out. It's just a quick tribute to a game I abs...

As the second Watcher of the South, Sathariel stayed close to his master’s side. While Samyaza created the flax of truth, Sathariel would spin a thread and weave it into the very reality around him. Beyond his smoothly guided words and expressive gestures, his skin itself brought his tales to life. The patterns of his wings would flex and flow with his impersonations, driving the excitement of any congregation to rapt attention.
When his heart was pierced, no one saw it for what it was...

This piece was painted by the incredible Samuel Araya: https://www.arayaart.com/
Sam has been helping me get closer to finish The Book of Watchers by donating his time to making some awesome paintings for it. I loved this piece so much, I made a LE print run for it.
It's 50 copies only and I haven't told anybody it's on the store yet, so I wanted to let you guys know before I made a larger announcement.

My wife said that it would take me an hour to get the digital version of this painting to the degree of finish I had gotten on the oil version. While I appreciate the optimism, this is a really involved piece.
Part of the original conceit behind directly paying homage to a classic painting was that it would allow me to more easily finish the dang thing. Instead, it's put me in a spot where I need to live up to Draper's immaculate work. It's fun, but it's not fast. Having the benefit of excelle...

This was as far as I took this painting digitally before transferring it down to a painting board. The goal was to try to answer a lot of the questions that were going to come up as I tried to paint it, before I committed any brush strokes.
The goal with the colors, was to break away from the Lament of Icarus painting and make something that incorporated much more of the palette from the original Sathariel piece. Not knowing much about paint mixing, I was hoping that if I resisted introducing ...

This is a unique painting in the series because it was the first I tried to finish traditionally. The plan was to paint it in oils, a process I started over a year ago. That means what you are looking at here is actually a really old WIP. One that predates the whole Zodiac series.
When the progress stalled out on this, I kept thinking that I was always only a week or two away from getting back to work on it. Recently, as I started to take inventory of what pieces I needed to finish to comp...

One day as the sun began to set, the boats attempted to return to shore. Ananiel pleaded with them to stay. They ignored his words. So, in fit of anger he summoned the waves to do what his words could not. He wrenched their boats from shore until the land was lost to the horizon. In life, first seafarers had been his acolytes. In death, they were their own men.

I like to spend a while with each painting if I can afford it. It gives me time to explore a few extra options and also lets me stumble across new inspiration.
As I spent some time with this one, instead of just polishing it up as is, I decided to play around with a few subtle elements of the composition. The waves ended up taking a really different shape at this step and I feel like I wouldn't have done that if I hadn't gotten a few days away from it.
The main drawback to spending...

Now we're back in color and things feel a lot more solid.
I wanted to keep the greens and browns from the first attempt at colorizing this piece, but the shift in values has moved them to different elements. This is the thing I don't think people realize about my process. The way I colorize my work forces a strong tie between the pattern light and where the colors fall within the piece. There is a tool in Photoshop called a "gradient map", which allows me to create a sort of "color grade" thro...

It's not uncommon for me to peel back some progress on a painting to jump back off from an earlier state. It's one of my favorite freedoms afforded by working digitally. This might be one of the first times I've actually shown myself doing it. In the past, I've covered up this back and forth progress by being more selective in WHEN I reveal my process. I'm making a push to be less self-conscious about showing my creative hesitations.
The mountain in the background was actually in an early vers...

There has been a lot of times I've been in this position. The early value study for this piece totally works for me and I think I understand the piece. In my mind and when I look at the sketch, I see the mood very clearly. But trying to actually push the piece forwards, I get stuck.
Getting stuck on a piece halfway through is always uncomfortable, but it's also been an experience that has preceded some of...

The Angel of Storms is coming back. This time it's personal.
There is another side to the themes from Ananiel I want to approach with this piece. The original one was about the feeling of starting something you don't have the power to stop. For a lot of people that resonated with feelings of addiction. While the original was more centered on the powerlessness of that feeling, I want this one to be more of the false power that comes with it.

The rituals Baraqiel performed were an object of fascination for both men and Angels alike. He brought to them the gift of tamed lightning. Despite the widespread appreciation for the fruits of this work, few volunteered to assist. Baraqiel was known not only for the power he commanded, but also his lack of respect for it. His fall was the first to prove that Watchers were not complete in their wisdom or their immortality.

I normally start with the background and work my way forwards. That's an easy way to make clear progress when you are trying to finish a clean painting.
For this piece, I wanted to make everything less clean. It's almost easier to do with physical paint, but I've been known to fake it in the past. It's something I've been wanting to do again for a while.
There is still a lot of elements that will get cleaned up, but you can see the more textural finish of the skin coming together. I thin...

This thing is coming together fast.
One of the things that probably jumps out at you is how different this piece is from the Zodiac series I just finished. That's really not an accident. Every time I switch from one series within Angelarium to another, it's my goal to make them as distinct as possible. Part of that is simply just a part of the creative intent but another part is more personal. Every time things change in my life, I want to take my art in a slightly different direction. There h...
