Wow. After months of anticipation (on my part), I'm back to working on the black sheep of the Angelarium family. Getting back to doing some darker pieces has me excited. I've been doing moody black and white studies recently and it's been whetting my palette to start a full fledged piece like this.

Taurus - Detail Phase

This is the direction I saw this heading once the pieces started to come together. By flattening out the shadowed areas, rather than exclusively darkening them, I've been able to make them ambiguous while retaining enough contrast to make the piece readable. Taurus - Color Phase

Originally, I was aiming to have this be all yellows and golds. I love desert landscapes and I wanted to see if I could get a sense of scale and awe from sticking to paler hues exclusively. It seemed to be working to a degree, but every time I walked away and came back, I felt something was lacking from the presence of the piece.
