The Driftwood Cathedral - Preview

I'm leaving for Seattle for Emerald City Comicon on an early flight tomorrow but I don't want to rush the last few hours of polish on this painting. Instead, I'm posting a preview of the final here and I'm going to be doing a full release when I get back next week.

Mortal Shores - Detail Phase

Larger scenes like this mean more detail. I've been extremely careful about what order I attack each portion of the painting because I want to try to minimize the redundant work. By working on the furthest away elements first and then slowly moving forwards, I have to redo edges a lot less than if I were to just jump around the painting. This is why Azrael has remained so untouched so late in the process. He'll be the last thing I finish before wrapping this thing up.

Mortal Shores - Color Phase

Nothing super new as far as this color palette is concerned. It's been hovering somewhere between where Asbeel and the last Azrael painting. But hey, those sickly yellows are super fun to paint. Fading between the saturated bits and damp grey tones is always very effective at building mood and atmosphere.

The Driftwood Cathedral represents the meeting place for the component elements of the human body. Saltwater flowing over tangled fiber. The sky crackling with the lighting like synapses...

Sorry for the long delay since the last piece. I took my very first ever vacation and my time away from work was dramatically extended by an illness I aquired while away. I'm all better and scrambling to get work finished.

Testing out video production

I'm working on figuring out ways to make this campaign the best it can be for you guys, so I'm working on figuring out what it will take to record and share the complete painting process.

This is an hour's worth of detail work sped up to 10x speed. I made it as an experiment to test out of the process for recording and publishing videos, but it will give you some insight into how I go about working on the details for my paintings.

Shateiel, Detail Phase

I've been taking this wonderfully slow time between Christmas and New Years to dig in and paint. Since this piece came together really quickly at first, I've needed to take some time to experiment with the content before I feel totally satisfied. That goes a lot slower now that everything is in color, so I've been sort of slowly poking my way towards finally doing a detail pass. It makes for a very relaxing holiday.

Normally, I don't like to make this many changes so late in a piece, but this one felt like that's where it was headed. As I've pushed the perspective and refined the bigger shapes of the image, making sure that everything is where I want it before I dig deep on detailing it all. I'm taking a muligan on the colors for this one. As I dove deeper into it, I decided to make some changes.

I'm playing around quite a lot with the colors on this one. At first it was very drab, no matter what I did to it, but the more I committed to be willing to break it, the more I began to see things I like.

The goal, is to create a sense of the scene being in the first light of the day as the mist has yet to clear.

After having experimented with a lot of smaller drawings, I worked up this more elaborate sketch while I was listening to lectures at my workshop. The environment there was really stimulating when it came to the themes of truth and perception, which this piece speaks to.

I was hoping to complete this piece before leaving to run my yearly workshop (The Fantastic Workshop) in Nashville. What got in the way was the usual distractions. And here's the interesting stuff.

Going light on value meant that I needed to go heavy on color. The color variation is what is driving this piece, so figuring out interesting ways of twisting oranges and blues together is what is going to make or break this thing. It's fun! I am sneaking away from other responsibilities to jump into this, which is always a good sign.

Sandalphon - Value Phase

The range of value in this piece is thinner than normal. At this phase it looks flat, but that's by design. The artist I'm quoting from for this piece is James Jean. I was inspired to look to his art because both the subject matter and the color palette I wanted to use were similar to some of his work.

What I noticed right away was how little he was utilizing value to build the piece. Instead, the flatter arrangement gives the work a more textural quality. Playing with texture and flat graphic...
