What hath been wrought
Across the fiery hilltop
These sculptures of men
Whose names the Angels forgot
As elements of this piece solidify, I'm working in some more details. Adding symbols and jewelry into the figure should give it a bit more of a lived in feel. I want the create a sense of a larger world beyond just the design as it stands.

Continuing with the new design for Penemue. This version is more focused on my personal association with writing. There is a shamanistic quality to it that I felt was essential to include.
I'm taking visual and stylistic queues from John Jude Palencar for this one.

A while back I had commissioned another artist to illustrate Penemue as an experiment. At the time, it seemed like a good idea to mix in other people's concepts into the project by getting multiple contributors to design more angels.
It was initially a successful experiment, since I got a great piece of art made for the series. The trouble came from properly setting expectations for ownership and accreditation. When pressed, I came down on the side of omitting the original design and making so...

With the year wrapping up I'm thinking a lot about how to make this project the best it can be. I've made a 2 question survey that's designed to help me make the Angelarium patreon campaign better.
Let me know what you like and want more of here:

The sun shines bold
Upon our fair grove
Until the shadow comes
To eat it all whole

I'm pushing further and further into making this piece more full and rich. It's been very relaxing and fun to work on. With less pressure to finish this piece towards the end of the month, it's much easier to focus on the process rather than the result.

I'm switching up my workflow a bit this time. I'm working out some of the rendering in advance of sorting out the color palette. Instead, I'm relying on a very simple 2 tone palette with the hope that I will be able to make subtle textural decisions more easily before jumping into the larger choices. I want to see how far I can take this piece without elaborating on either the colors or values.

This angel is going to be representing the eclipse. The themes of power being overshadowed and stifled will dominate the painting.

The home stretch.
The golds were speaking to me, so I leaned into them, pushing out the last of the pale blues. It's later in the process than I usually shift the palette, but it felt necessary.
This piece has come together bit by bit, element by element. one at a time. I've already spent a 12 hour day on it, trying to get it done in time for the end of the month, but it's always worth spending the extra time to work everything out.

Gold. Everybody loves gold.
Playing the gold off the red was an experiment I wanted to make before I pinned down the approach to this piece. I honestly thought I would probably keep the pale blue and red scheme from the last update. But I'm immediately enjoying the gold more.
I've been looking for a good excuse to do a gold leaf embellish prints. Maybe this will be it, maybe not. We'll see.
The quotes to some classical art is pretty clear.
The color is a throwback to my days working on the World of Darkness MMO. I saw the new Bloodborne content using the same palette and I wanted to jump back into it.
There is another palette that I'm going to be playing with before I push forward into final, but I'm definitely going to be keeping the red.

This is going to be a fun one to paint!
I'm looking forward to doing something a little darker this time around. The angel of purity is a pretty ironic title for a figure that is anything but.

This is the point where I can confidently say that this painting is coming together.
It's always scary because I both need to finish these paintings on a deadline and they are going to represent me for a long time. You guys are all chipping in money to make them, so I want to make them great, but that pressure makes it harder to make choices.
I've taken a step back from worrying recently and I'm enjoying the process more again. I think it's leading the work back to a better and m...

So, this was a color scheme that I've been meaning to play with for a while and now that I want to rebel against the super dark and black scheme I used on Baraqiel, it's time to give it a go.
There is a decent chance that I'm going to see this tomorrow and chicken out. But it I don't think is going to be an interesting piece to work on.
Feel free to let me know what you think.

Tamiel has a lot of themes behind him. Perfection, hidden power, deadly strikes. Under them all is the quality of being unseen. So, since the Watchers have all of their properties be their downfall, Tamiel is blind.
My first attempts at finding a color palette for a blind angel were pretty rough. I kept falling back on really simple sepia tones.

I've created an alternate version of Baraqiel as well. This preview is for patrons only.

Don’t touch me
You fiend, you terror
Not for one moment
You’ve moved my mind
You’ve stopped my heart
You fiend, you terror
I want you to touch me again
Don’t tempt me
Don’t tempt me
I want to see you march again

This is a piece that was mostly fully formed in my mind before I started working on it. That's a situation that I normally warn aspiring artists against because our minds are exceptional at tricking us into thinking our ideas are all good. The hope is that if I follow my stylistic references (Phil Hale in this case), that I'll be able to pull through despite unfavorable circumstances.
The truth is that is really is coming along very easily considering how much I chewed the idea up in my he...
