After a very long hiatus from the workstation, I'm really happy to be getting back to painting.
I've still got a couple dozen emails to open up and probably more than that I need to write. But this is where I need to focus my time right now.
This will be the only painting I finish this month, but some of the groundwork that's getting laid down right now will pay off in the long run when it comes to lots more art throughout the winter and beyond.
Thanks again for the sup...

Hey there Patrons,
I'm spending today getting caught up on correspondence as well as ordering, shipping and posting digital rewards. Before I get started though, I need to take a moment to gush about you, to you.
The fact that this project is doing as well as it's doing isn't because I'm making it, it's because you are supporting it. The monthly support that comes from Patreon is part of what keeps me honest about delivering regular content through the internet. The act of p...

Hey Patrons,This month has been among the most challenging to date.A lot built up to Dragoncon, right at the start of the month. It basically knocked a 2 week chunk out of my schedule between prep, travel, operating the booth, travel again and then sickness. My assistant Julie came with me and we poured all our effort into totally blowing it out as an event. Things went amazing and there is a chance that I met you there.Coming into this month already behind on tutorial content and shipping turne...

Upon the hill we saw
a figure wreathed in red.
With smoke around it rising
it sang to the newly dead.
"Do not give what cannot be taken"
It's mouth did not move.
"There is no country for us,
and no fruit within this grove"

The core idea behind this piece involved two things.1. Crabs2. A red and white color paletteDoing really colorful images is a lot easier than trying to balance a black and white one. I keep resisting the urge to add additional color accents to the piece to flesh out its depth or balance it. Finding a way to make is feel plausible with nothing besides red has been hard. I thought it would be easy to do fewer colors. Next time I'm under pressure, I'm going to just make a more realistic scene.

This piece was started with a far more rendered sketch than what I normally do. With less than a week to finish it, I wanted to see if doing a more elaborate sketch would speed the process along.
Experimentation is something that has always been a part of this series and I'm hoping that I'll continue to do that, even after there is more pressure for each one to be popular.

I really want to go with yellows and reds for this one. I'm going full Beksinski with this palette.

This was one of those cases where there wasn't a lot of information on the character I was illustrating, so I've taken some extra liberties.Asbeel is a deserter. His name means deserter or forsaken. Since each of The Watchers have their properties flipped back on them, I wanted to make it feel as though he was himself abandoned. He holds onto a small figure which could represent his hope or his failure that he can't let go of. I want to paint a portrait of a person and a place that has been left...

Hey there faithful backers.
I've fallen behind on tutorial creation almost instantly after starting it. It's going to happen because I enjoy doing it and I know you are interested to see it.
The reason I've fallen behind has a lot more to do with my travel schedule than anything else. I'm packing up for a week of driving and selling at Dragoncon in Atlanta starting tomorrow and I'll be playing catch up again when I get back.
I'll be coming back with this last month's tutor...

I decided to take the Barlowe inspiration even further by borrowing one of his favorite color palettes as well.

Taking things in a slightly darker direction this time around. Armaros is the fallen angel of undoing. He's explicitly described as teaching the unbinding of enchantment, but I wanted to link him to the concept of taking things apart. He's gonna be a little weird, maybe even Barlow-esque.
I went through more sketch paper for this one than any angel to date. It's important to me that I don't just take the first good sketch but instead wait out all the false starts until I know where the whole t...

The field hung silent as swaying grass waved back at the ocean above
The giants march past us by the thousand
by the thousand thousand and many more
Infinite upon infinite

I think we're looking at an unpolished version of the final at this point. There was a lot of little pushes and pulls that got me here but I'm feeling more confident in how it all fits together now.
I ended up flipping it for the first time earlier today and had to skew the whole piece to balance it out. There is always this tiny little mote of dread that cries our when I haven't seen the piece flipped and it's so easy to ignore. Thankfully, I've been at this long enough to know better and...

There have been a few pieces so far with star fields in the background, so considering the more surreal nature of the Watchers, I want to try and make something a little more expressive.
The brown and cyan color palette is something I don't think I've worked with before and I'm excited to dig into. Creating a completely washed out skin tone is going to be a lot of fun.
I'm taking suggestions on what the accompanying tutorial is going to be. Please feel free to leave one in the co...

Sorry for the long lag time. I've been traveling and getting lots of business stuff settled.
Here's the first work in progress for Kokabiel, Angel of the Stars.
These fallen angels have VERY little written about them so I've been able to take a lot of liberties with them. The hope is that I'm leaving enough bread crumbs for me to write my way back through them and fill out the story.
I have a lot of ambitious ideas about what I want to do with the lighting in this one. As ...

Hey guys.
The first round of cards came in and we're going to start mailing these out to people who were backing from the previous month onward.
We've got 46 unique cards in already and there is another 14 that are coming soon.
I'll be revealing more about them in the near future.

I had a really bad day today. But there is something about dark moods that allow me to put more personal feelings into a painting. Rather than keep a scary looking face and threatening hand, I thought it would be more interesting to make him feel hurt. The fallen angels are more interesting when they are tragic.
The colors were supposed to be more surreal, but as I mix them, they always feel more and more natural. I guess I'll have to try something more daring next time.
Time to ...
