The Death of Termite

Termite was archived by the maintainer of the project this week.

Some people have questioned why it mattered to me when the likes of Alacritty, kitty, and st exist. The answer is complicated.

I think to boil it down to its simplest, the reason is that it was my first real terminal emulator. Sure, I used Konsol and Gnome terminal before that, and a small stint with Terminator, but those were just tools. Things I used to get a few commands run when I wanted to install a ...

Adventures (or Misadventures) In Xmonad Continue

I'll be perfectly honest, I've spent the vast majority of the last few days in dwm, despite promising myself that I was going to give xmonad a real try.

But there's just something severely frustrating about wanting to get something to work only for it to not work. At all. DT and his xmonad stuff makes it look so easy to get xmobar up running, but I can't do it. So, I went and looked at the documentation. Followed that to the letter, and still nothing.

So, I grabbed DT's dots...

Android vs iOS

Over the years, I've switched back and forth between Android and iOS many times. I've had the original iPhone, the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4, the iPhone 5, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6s. On the Android side I can't even remember, it's honestly ridiculous. I know I had the original Droid, but that's about the only one that sticks out. The rest are forgettable Samsung and LG phones.

Right now I have the One Plus 7t and before that I had the One Plus 6. So I've actually been on Android sin...

Local vs Streaming Music

This has really little to do with Linux, but I was curious? Any of you have a preference between using your own music collection or using a service like Spotify?

I've been going back and forth over the last few months, and I can't really decide which I like better. I own all the music I could want. And for music discovery I can do something free like Pandora. So when I do use my local music, I don't feel deprived.

On the other hand, my phone only has 128gb of storage, so it ...

Live Streaming is Hard and Thoughts on The Channel

That whole saying "it gets easier with practice" better be true. I did my second live stream this week, and I do think that it was better than the first. The audio for sure was better. I watched a video by Podcastage, and he had some great settings that really helped. It is so much better I may be able to stop recording my audio separately, though I guess we'll see.

Most of this post is inside baseball, so sorry about that, but I thought it might be interesting.

I have a Ricing Problem.

Hi. My name is Matt, and I have a ricing problem.

I change the theme (i.e. rice) my window manager, in this case DWM, every three weeks or so.

Now, this isn't end of the world for anyone or anything, but it's a problem I think a lot of people who use Linux have. They spend so much time making Linux shiny and cool, that they forget that their computer is actually a tool meant to get work done.

I know this definitely applies to me.

Over the four years n...

Bash Scripting Snobbery

I am not good at bash scripting. I'm learning, but it's a long process. I've been watching some Youtube videos on the subject, and found a lot of tutorials that are just seriously off putting.

The one thing I've pretty much learned about programing of any sort is that there are usually two or more ways of doing something. The syntax might be rigid, but there are usually a lot of ways of actually getting something done.

printf and echo in bash come to mind as one exampl...
