May Illustration (Desktop Wallpaper!)

Happy MAY!! Spring is my favorite season. It's kind of a melancholy season, you know? It's so big.

I love drawing bikes. They're intimidating at first, but so simple and elegant. All the parts are laid out right there, brakes, pedals, gears. They make sense in a way that I don't think other things do (like, what's a car? what's a HORSE??? forget it). I have a Bianchi and I'm obsessed with it.  I think 2020 is the year I draw a bunch, a bunch, a bunch of bikes.

I drew this whole thing in 16 hours!! WOW!! IN ONE DAY LOL I have no regrets. This was extremely rewarding to do. How Could You - Cover

This is what I've been working on this month! I officially signed with an agent (Stephanie Winter with P.S. Literary) and have been working on a pitch packet for a graphic novel. I started writing the script last year. Now I'm putting together the character bios and summary and such.

May's sticker! Design preview.

Next month's sticker design, inspired in part because I've been sooo dehydrated recently. It's important to stay hydrated! I drink out of a wide mouth Ball jar with a metal straw. Sometimes I spice it up by pouring my La Croix over ice. It's the little things, y'all.

Painterly - March Patreon Illustration

I watched Portrait of a Lady on Fire for the second time recently. Both times, I became so wistful for oil painting. I don't really have the space to set up an oil painting studio, or the time to go somewhere to do oil painting... so I thought I would experiment a little bit with doing a painterly style on the iPad.

Exciting news!

I have an agent?? I'm working on a graphic novel! It's a college-aged new adult story, a romance drama!

So far I have a beginning-to-end script draft, but I need to make this story twice as long as it is. I have lots of room to flesh things out

Pirate Lady Process Pics

I started this drawing at TGIFF. I don't think it's done yet. The sun is in my eyes at this coffee shop, so it's hard to see the colors accurately. I'll revisit it later under better visual conditions.

Also I realized that I didn't get any half-way saves of drawing the chair. The chair was super an after thought. I just want to draw girls floating in space!!! Backgrounds? Objects? Whomst??

I've been playing around with how I draw eyebrows recently? I kind of dig the textured look.

March Sticker Club Design!

As first conceptualized at January's Ink and Drink, I'm proud to announce the March sticker design. I have been really leaning in to American trad as a style for these stickers. This sticker will be 100% Patreon exclusive and twice the size of previous stickers. Once they're gone, they're gone!

I submitted this baby for the Portland Zine Symposium anthology! This year is PZS's 20th anniversary, so the theme of the anthology is... 20 things. I did 20 outfits! One for every year from 2000 to 2019, age 6 to 25.

My next comic for Autostraddle! It's loosely based on a conversation I had with a friend. Fire signs rise up.

These images show the many steps of the process. I have included the sketch layer, the line art, the first splashes of color, and the rendering stage, with lighting and extra atmospheric details.

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly I'm going to be doing for Autostraddle's comics. I'm definitely just exploring things right now. Style, subject, etc. Gonna keep trying...

How to use a mini-washer (comic)

Welcome to the wonderful world of doing laundry without a full washer and dryer!

2019 Summary

Here's a look at my 2019 art journey! This year, I started freelancing full time. It's been the best decision of my life, and I am so incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make it a reality!

I started the year not too sure of myself, trying to pry open my brain and force myself to push my boundaries. February was when I first started accepting commissions and threw myself into a series of illustrations from anyone who would have me.

Steven Universe Future spoilers --> Pearls! (+ roughs)

Pearl has always been a favorite of mine. She's relatable in a big way! I loved the new fusion from the Volleyball episode. And of course, any time Utena is referenced in SU, I go feral.

With this illustration, I wanted to approach the Utena reference. I referenced an Anthy/Utena image for the pose. I also added Pearl's sword to amplify the reference, but during the drawing stage, I liked the idea of her dropping the sword rather than holding it. It deflates the composition a bit by hav...

When I draw roughs for comic pages, I don't pay too close attention to where the text will actually end up. I just try to get all the ideas down on the paper! By the end of the process, the text moves around, or sometimes I get rid of the text completely!...
