I don't know if I've mentioned it here, but a few months ago a neighbor brought over a stray calico in a very pregnant condition. She had her kittens in our "spare" room, and they've been gradually destroying it ever since. The bigger they get the higher they can reach, so I keep having to move more and more of my stuff out of there. In a box I recently had to move I discovered a stack of random old pages: original pages from Chip, unpub-lished pag...

I have a fondness for the classics, as you know, and monster girl pinups don't get any more classic than a sexy female swamp creature. Cheesecake of Horror will have more than a few. It's also a fun concept to play with, in terms of design: fins, gills, scales, skin coloration patterns, etc.; not to mention that when a figure is underwater, gravity is not really a factor in posing. I'm not sure if this piece will be painted and included in the collection...

Here we have Meg's final costume design for "Undercovers". As I was roughing out the first pages of the story, I noticed that the short stockings weren't very flattering, especially after the skirt comes off. So I made the stockings longer, and I thought I'd have her show you her secret weapon. The derringer, I mean.

For those who aren't here for this kind of content, I apologize for running two such similar commissions back-to-back, but I wanted them close together on the page for anyone who wants to compare. I suppose "severity" is relative--both pieces involve the same water demon, and three tentacles--but I'd say three intruders entering through the back door is arguably more severe than one in the back, one in the front, and one in the...upstairs window? (My playful euph...

This is so strange. I've done two or three commissions with this exact theme, and I could have sworn I posted at least one of them here. But I went through my not-exactly-up-to-date files, and went through all posts on the page twice, and, well, I guess it was my imagination. It could also be that, looking at the same files over and over, I forget where I've seen specific images. Who knows. As for the commission itself, believe it or not, this is arguabl...

Here we are at the next stage of the Day of the Dead commission. Obviously I've sketched-in Death, but a lot more has happened as well. I've added Deja's hands, Maria's hand and fan, and rendered Abbey's dress. I completely changed Death's pose, when I realized that you wouldn't have been able to see her little trademark eye squiggle with her facing the way she was before. I tried to honor the Day of the Dead theme with the attire, while giving each character her...

See, this is what I mean by overdoing the sketching thing. If this keeps happening, I may have to switch from the sketchbook to Bristol board, because the sketchbook paper has a pronounced surface texture. Fighting it makes these things take much longer than they otherwise would. But it turned out okay, I think. It's a theme I always find cute. And designing the shoulder treatment on the dress was fun. As you'll see in this week's second post, I continue to whitt...

Here's the commission I'm currently working on. It depicts Maria, the character in the Day of the Dead makeup (who has her own comic, though I'm not familiar with it; apparently it was a TV show as well), posing with Deja Vu, Abbey, and Neil Gaiman's Death. All are wearing variations on Day of the Dead attire. Maria's red dress will be painted. Red. Sorry there's not much to see yet, but it's gonna be fuckin' awesome, man! Just you wait! (I may be in dan...

I don't know what's happening with Patreon lately. There was the missing image last week, and this week... Okay, let me explain. Last night, I was up in the small hours of the morning making my posts, as per usual, when-- un-as per usual-- I was kicked out of the site. I tried for hours to get back in, with no luck, and stopped checking about one in the afternoon. So of course the posts went up when they were scheduled to, but without t...

I told you there would be monster girls, but you knew that anyway, didn't you? I hope to get back to commissions and roughing out the Far West pages soon, after I get a comfortable buffer of content built up. In the meantime, hopefully you're enjoying these little scribbles. It should be interesting to see which of these wind up being developed further into full paintings for my various series....

- Mr. Vincent only wears “googly eyes” on formal occasions.
- Abbey would not wear her white raygun with black leggings.
- Bob is shown in his original design, which is forbidden by his contract.
- Scratch appears to be semi-conscious.
- Sid is wearing a polka-dotted tie, even though it has a suspicious, crusty stain on it, and he has twelve clean striped ties at home.
- Also, he's wearing a fake arrow-through-the-head, when he normally just shoves...

Oh, Meg...again? I've said it before--how does she get into these situations? I'm sure part of it is me being paid to produce these images, yeah; that's got to figure in somehow. But maaayybe there's more to it. Think about it: People's bedroom personas often completely contradict that of their everyday self. The most common example is the controlling, dominant businessman or woman who is submissive in bed. Could that be Meg? She's an incredibly assertiv...

For absolutely no reason, here's a Boneyard fun page. Well, for fun's sake, I guess. Test your Boneyard knowledge and see how many things you can find wrong with this picture. Write your answers on a 3x5 card and send--along with two official Boneyard or Boneyard with Crunchbones cereal box tops--to FAKE CONTEST, WHATTACROCK, U.S.A., 60609. Winners receive a framed self portrait of yours truly, entitled "Reclining Nude". ...

It turns out that doing commissions back-to-back, prepping the Far West story, and producing Patreon content is a bit much to do concurrently. So I'm going to spend a week or so doing a bunch of sketches (like the one above) so that I have a supply of new content to post here while I finish up the other stuff. This week we have a sweet little faerie sunning herself on a rock, but coming up we'll have everything from monster girls to aliens to my own char...

I just don't know what happens to my characters, that they fall into these situations so often. Is it good luck or bad? Do they really mind, or is it roll play? And do the little demon guys make this a group thing, or are they just considered staff? These are the things that keep me up at night.
Right now I'm working on the end of the Far West script, and storyboarding it, none of which in itself produces anything imme...

I spent a few hours cleaning up a scan of what was going to be this week's post, only to realize that it just wasn't good enough to post. So I came up with this, which I don't think has been seen before-- coincidentally, because I didn't think it was good enough. (It may have run on the back of a Deja issue or something, I don't know. Sometimes publishers get desperate to fill up space, especially at the last minute.) This was created very early on, when not only...

As you may or may not have noticed, I try to keep the designs of everything in Far West as close to our own Old West as possible (and I mean the real Old West, not the version we were sold by Hollywood up until the 70s or so). I think that grounding helps sell a world that comes with elves and dragons. So I realized that in preparing for a story in which Meg goes undercover in a brothel, I would have to "whore her up a bit", but keep it as...

I posted this commission to Facebook a few years back, to mostly positive responses, but I did get one that irked me. It said simply: "Why are this woman's pants torn? What purpose does that serve?" Now realistically, I understand the mentality this is coming from; it's the whole "exploitation" and "objectification" thing. It should come as no surprise that I reject that nonsense utterly, and not just as it applies to my own work, or the depiction of women in art...

I am going to murder my scanner. Believe it or not, there are clouds in the background of this sketch. The silhouette of the spires showed up, but...ah, screw it.
I love this kind of piece, with all the different patterns and textures. It's also fun implying fictional exotic cultures with those kinds of details. The creature itself is a variation on a theme that you'll be seeing more than once in my Beauties & Beasts ...

My sketching skills have really atrophied lately. Sketching from imagination, I mean. Everything I do these days is on deadline, so I don't have a lot of time to just sketch; everything is focused on getting to that final image as directly as possible. Skills dull with lack of use, though, and my sketching sucks right now. I need to do a lot more of it, and--no surprise here--learn to loosen up. Take this entry, for example. This was supposed to be just a simple ...

Here's one that might surprise you: a commission of Abbey as a Roman gladiator. In direct contrast with last week's Abbey pinup, of course. The costume is as accurate as research could make it. The idea might have made for an interesting short. Abbey's a petite powerhouse today, but that's because she's lived so long. This might have been anywhere within a few hundred years of her turning, so she wasn't nearly as formidable then. The fights would have been very i...

So, last week was a little weird, work-wise. I spent most of it on a commission, only to realize on Saturday that it wouldn't be suitable as a main post. I'll still share it when it's done, but the subject isn't exactly as attractive as I think you've all come to expect. So I scrambled to come up with something I could turn into a post quickly (I like to have a piece done, cleaned up and the image scheduled by end of Sunday, then do the text on Monday), and I fou...

You might recall a pinup of Charli and the man-in-the-moon I posted awhile back. Well, here's a commission along the same lines. I could regale you with fascinating details of what a bitch it is to do huge black areas like this (and to try to get them really black) with no decent black inks on the market, but instead I'll cover something else.
Last week I said I'd announce a big project that will be appearing right here on this...

Hello everyone. It's okay, you can all relax. The question you've all been asking yourselves--"Can a vampire be a faerie?"--has been answered. I mean, I don't actually know, but I do know they can be drawn as a faerie. I proved it, with this commission, right here (although according to that logic, they can be a great many things, some best left unsaid). This actually reminds me that one of the things I wanted to do with Boneyard was...

Just a page from my sketchbook, a bunch of sketches of monster girls. You may have already seen more developed versions of some of them, I'm not sure. I've got like five versions of the Godzilla girl going, just testing out different media and color schemes. And the witch I used as an experiment, to see how far I could take it on my limited drawing program with my even more limited (read: nonexistent) digital skills. It was not the highest of successes. I'd love ...

So here she is--evil Deja, before she was Deja, that is--inked, then with gray tones. I should have pointed out with the last commission that, as with this one, when I know I'm going to be adding gray tones, I ink much more sparingly, sticking mostly to thick lines and omitting thin lines that indicate tones, shadows, etc. This is because, while you can use graphite over thin ink lines, it's not a pretty thing. So basically, an inked piece awaiting gray ...

As usual, I forgot halfway through this piece that it was supposed to be a work-in-progress presentation, hence the jump from inks to final render. Oops. But you can still see some of the evolution, like the removal of some details (like the window at upper left) to avoid clutter, and the addition of little details, like the tension wrinkles where the clips on the uniform straps grip the leggings. There was a little miscommunication with the commissioner over the...

Waaayyy back, when I still had a thing called optimism (yes, that far back), Elin Winkler, owner and editor at Radio Comix, created a character called Cookie. I thought the character was adorable, so I did a couple of pinups of her. I think this ran in an issue of Milk!, but don't ask me which issue. Apologies for the poor image quality; I cleaned it up as best I could, but the scan just sucks.
