Backstage pass: Car near miss

We hope you had a lovely weekend! It was Thanksgiving weekend here as you know, and we had a very near miss in the ol' Tesla coming home from Thanksgiving with friends. What made it all the more scary was having Babyfractic in the car with us (securely placed in her car seat of course). This could've been a lot worse, and as it was there was merely a scuff on our rear bumper that wiped away with a tissue, thanks to the flexible bumper - we were amazed.

I dropped the camera files into Fi...

Early bird: The ЯRetro Show #22

Here's the most jam packed episode of The ЯRetro Show yet! There was just so much to get through this month, but I didn't want to leave anything out. I will have to edit out a bit of the copyrighted content for public consumption, but the full uncut show is yours to enjoy in its entirety, and we hope you do!

Early access video: https://youtu.be/O5Y8scEYy1Y

Happy Thanksgiving - we are very thankful for YOU.

Backstage pass: Channel progress 🎉

To those new here I have said in the past that we and you form a team, so I always love sharing top secret channel based updates. And the past few weeks have seen quite a change in the channel's fortunes. Things have always ticked along nicely, taking on new subscribers slowly but surely, however since the more recent Lost KITT and Duel videos, there's been a bit of a seismic shift.

As you can see above, for the first time ever we hit 1 million views of videos in a 28 day period. That's...

Late bird: Atari 2600+ Review by Dan Wood

So, Atari USA were meant to send Retro Recipes an Atari 2600+ by the deadline everyone got, and we were really looking forward to it with gratitude, but apparently our one unfortunately slipped through the cracks - although it was confirmed we were/are on the list.

It's unclear if we'll still receive one soon (and they're only available for pre-order at the moment so I would not have received one paid for). However there are some tweaks needed according to some reviews, so perhaps an up...

Early Shorts: Did the world end in 1988?

It's been a long while since we did a Shorts video, but here's a theory I heard recently that lends itself to this compact format.

Backstage pass: Christmas Retro Goodies

Just a few thoughts as I roam the shopping wilderness with Puppyfractic in tow (actually she was towing me).

Don't worry, she found her gift just after as well:

Backstage pass: One man

Is it a Mirage? No, it's a teeny behind the scenes sneak PEEK at that very special something I'm working on. As there is another production company involved it will likely be a couple of months before I can share more, but trust me if any wait has been worth the wait, it's this wait that will be worth the wait.

Early bird: Streaming 80s TV to my Childhood TV set

Here's a little (lengthy?) Quick Bytes for your camcorder-tinted glasses viewing pleasure. I got great feedback here and on YT about the new Quick Bytes style, so I'm running with it again here; though it's becoming synonymous with "Quick" to make rather than watch. Hopefully that's a win-win thing. It won't be exceedingly common, but fit the bill today as I'm sure you'll agree when you see the final result through that retro lens!!

Backstage Pass: New Banner Design

I had some fun today playing with DALL-E 3 which is now built into ChatGPT. You might've noticed the thumbnail for the upcoming Duel Truck video, which was also made partly with that same AI method, followed by a lot of tweaking and merging of element from other AI images:

In that one the cliffs used to be forests but were replaced using Photoshop Generative Fill, and so on.

Here's the de...

Backstage Pass: How illuminating

I thought you might like to join me for a very raw and very uncut/unedited soldering adventure as I splice some lighting wires together for some hot soldering action! Actually more like rusty. Anyway not particularly retro, but I find soldering quite therapeutic and hope you do too!

P.S. I'm pleased to report the end result worked great! 💡

Digital minimalism ongoing

Just a quick snapshot and a note to say I'm still practicing the digital minimalism and retro tech as explored in this video when out and about with family. In this photo from the weekend taken on Ladyfractic's cellphone you can see:

📷 Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo

The latter is a really fun camera with Polaroid style prints. But you can also print photos taken on your phone or o...

Backstage pass: New Intro Editor Commentary

Here's a little behind the scenes of how I made the end of the new intro opening titles, of "me" driving KITT into the movie studios to get to the ЯR set!

After the edits I talk about, I added a little camera shake and slow zoom in to make it appear like a handheld camera shot and thus more real. I also darkened KITT's cockpit in that first shot of KITT entering the studios to hide David Hasselhoff and help suspend disbelief that it could be me!

The Knight Rider episode this is...

Early bird: Is the DUEL Truck still at the bottom of the cliff?

Firstly, please enjoy the new ending to the ЯR opening titles as I reveal the true location of the ЯR Studio ;) ;) You'll also note a little change to the first two shots of the end credits :)

As for the video itself, wow this is a biggie. If you consider research, prep, shooting, compiling footage and audio, and editing, this is probably the biggest project to date.

I've wondered all my life if that killer truck that goes off the cliff at the end of Spielberg's first ever movie...

Big Tease®

Just a little tease here but I've spent the last couple of days filming something verrrry special indeed for you guys. I'm bound by an NDA at the moment, but I am pretty sure this is by far the biggest project Retro Recipes has been part of, and I can't wait to share more when the timing is right. A lot of people are going to end up enjoying this one!

🎟️ Backstage Pass: Camcorder Shenanigans

Here's a little video of some camcorder tests directed at you (yes you) which were the first recording I made before I even started filming that recent camcorder Quick Bytes. It includes a quick demonstration of how TV set Hertz conflict against camera refresh rates.

We then cut (starkly) to normal quality video where I show you how I went about digitising the camcorder footage ready for normal upload to YouTube!

But in the process of filming I discovered some ghostly goings on wi...

Would you like to own KITT? 🙌

In a world where the bond between man and machine knows no bounds, a twist of fate has befallen my KITT replica that is both thrilling and poignant. As the legends of the past – like Queen – once vocalized, "I'm in love with my car". Yet, destiny has presented an offer too compelling to decline.

With a heavy heart and high hopes, I've decided to part ways with it. This video offers an early glimpse of the public broadcast that will reach the masses in a couple of mont...
