Was just double checking some smart object and displace approaches as my partner was asking how you do it. Typically you would use it for product photography but I ended up here.
PSD files for the project and the displacement map is attached below.
Thanks again!

A few notes I made up for some students recently on the topic of oil paint on glass animation:
Equipment & Materials:
Glass
You can use a cheap frame to start of with while exploring the medium, but I would try and get one with glass rather than plastic, at least if you wanted to get extended use out of it. The plastic will scratch up pretty quickly from the repeated cleaning which may make it harder to slide the ...

Here’s the part 2 of the TVPaint > After Effects video.
It demonstrates how to set up the JSON Panel in AE and import your TVP JSON scene into After Effects.

Since I’ve had a few students asking about this method I thought to record a little tutorial on the ins and outs of working in TVPaint and ways I’ve found to speed up things.
Part 2 of the series will involve the integration of this footage into After Effects. I’ve already recorded the process but need to edit down the 50 odd minutes of footage, so will probably go up next week at some point.
Still testing out ways to format these kinds of videos but have included a lil floa...

Showing how I went about making this illustration in Procreate.
Music is City Lights by Holizna https://freemusicarchive.org/music/holiznacc0/
Trying out a new approach to this kind of thing and figuring out the best ways to edit the Procreate footage. I might do some finetuning down the way for future timelapses taking out flickering frames as I switch layers on and off as that can be a bit iffy....

Another demo I did with my students. this time using 3D camera and layers to achieve a bit more of a dimensional effect, along with some lighting in scene too.
Attached is the project file for After Effects too.

I did a rough demonstration on a looping BG for a student this week
First I did an adjusted layout drawing (above) to work better with this kind of chase scene set up, then brought that into AE to rebuild it with some fractal noise and mesh warp & power pin usage on the ground plane, then some simple scaling and duplicating for the trees. For the final version the student is planning to use repeat...

I’m trying some new things with my process videos.
Here is a bit of a breakdown on the Water Rabbit animation that I posted last week.
Hopefully my voice is clear enough with my accent and the like, but I wrote up captions for it too to help. I’ve also got a nice new microphone that will help somewhat, but happy to hear any suggestions! Was debating putting some soft music in the BG for instance but maybe that is too distracting, or maybe the audio sounds too flat.
Let m...

Before starting on Wolfwalkers in August 2018, I did a bunch of warm up charcoal studies, the above one of which featured in the art of book. I'll be sending out post cards with this study to post pack patrons in the new year.
Thanks again for all your support and hope you can enjoy the festivities!

For the city scenes I used after effects to build the 3D environments, maintaining more a of a graphic diorama effect to match the 2D woodblock style, using a mixture of existing bgs made by Final line & Colour departments, while still incorporating perspective. This scene was cut in the end, though we did complete it. Go watch Wolfwalkers!

The main 2D graphic style meant there wasn't any 100% accurate floor plan, so for Tooth Rock Plaza Daniel Pinheiro Lima quickly built a model, which we then tweaked scale and proportion to feel correct to the wolf's eye view and travelling camera, all while trying to match the shape language present in the 2D environments.

Here are four more from another scene which David McDermott built in 3D, specifying areas to lift the leaf canopy, and open up the space where necessary.
Once the environment was tweaked, I then finetuned the camera work to match performance and added scent trails in Blender.

Some of the drawovers for the more elaborate deep camera shots required multiple 2D drawovers, showing the different segments as they are revealed. Here we have David's 3D first pass after we had honed in on the camera path.
And then my drawovers on top of those same frames, trying my best to coordinate the elements so that they have an overall flow, and unity, without looking overly cluttered or busy.

My drawover on Daniel Pinheiro Lima's first pass using Blender for this scene, referencing the 2D environments from the same location and adapting them to match as we were intercutting between the two ways of seeing the world quite a bit. Most of the drawovers were very quick and simple.

Have a few examples of style drawovers I did while working with Daniel Pinheiro Lima and David McDermott on the wolfvision sequences.
It was mostly all about guiding the composition, so it still had a flow similar to the 2D scenes, despite having a moving camera.

A bit of animation I did last year.
It's a 22 frame loop, but with a recursive overlap. I think the total frame count for the rabbit animation is 88 frames or there abouts.
I might try and edit a wee process post of this, to show how I approached it if people are interested.
