Learning experiences

There are some photographers that find their signature style and make a great career from it. Personally I can usually pick a Bruce Weber image or a Annie Leibovitz photo instantly. Then there are other photographers that mix things up. I bounce between natural light outdoor shoots and studio shoots and while I think I'm relatively consistent in each individual segment I don't know that people can pick an outdoor shot of mine if they'd only seen studio shoots.

Home - Download

This is a man alone, unguarded in a space where he is comfortable. Home.

There was a beautiful simplicity in my model’s dark skin against the bare wall and the concrete floor and the stark red of the chair and he felt comfortable enough to explore himself as men do when they are naked and alone.

Sometimes it's just the simple set up that works. We just used one light and for most of the shoot, a stylish red chair against a white wall, with the model doing his thing.

A pleasant surprise

Behind the scenes with Ty

Ty is a model from Melbourne and he was in Sydney for a week. When we made contact I wasn't sure we were going to be able to make a shoot work but we managed to squeeze an early morning trip to the beach in. Ty has done a great job in getting in shape. Apparently he was quite out of shape a year ago and now, as you can see, that is not the case.

Leading up to my Tribe series, an exhibition I launched on twitter rather than in a gallery, I did some test shoots while I was working on concepts and figuring out what I was going to do. This shoot with JP, a Brazilian model who was in Sydney at the time, was part of the exploration. In some of the other shots from this shoot, I had some face paint on him. Smoke - download

A day with no plans when it’s cold outside but warm inside, why not make the most of it and relax. A household with few inhibitions, a heater and a joint makes for a very relaxed day.

That’s exactly what this model did with his day. He turned the heater on, had a smoke along with a cup of tea and chilled right out.

There’s no need for clothes or inhibitions on a day like that.

Not just for the sake of it

For a very long time it was nearly impossible to find models willing to pose full frontal. People were worried about how it would be perceived and how it might affect their work. These days nearly everyone has sent nudes to people and with the rise of OnlyFans, it's far from the problem it used to be. 

Now, I know the more a model shows the more attention a download or a series gets and if it goes into a more erotic or adult world, then it sells even more. However there is a danger...

Respectful Inspiration?

A little while ago I posted about my pledge to increase diversity in my models. It's made me very much aware of how white most of my models are so since then I've photographed a Mauritian model and a Venezuelan. I've also photographed a model with cerebral palsy who you wouldn't realise when you look at his photos, as well as my first trans model Rhett.

Early Morning - Download
