WIP - Appeal & Interest Tutorial Outline

TL,DR: This is an outline for my next How To Make Your Art Look Nice Tutorial on appeal and interest and this is how I go about the early stages of my tutorials!

Before we get to the outline itself, I think I want to be transparent with how I approach making tutorials because I don't think I talk about how much writing and thinking this takes! SKETCH THOUGHS 70

Some sketches, story ideas, and brush experiments! I'm really enjoying how Clip Studio Paint makes sketching so much faster than it needs to be. 2020s nearing a close and I wonder how many sketch pages I can churn out before it ends. Thinking of compiling these for a PDF maybe.

MAGIC FOLKS - Fae Magic

I think I want to give sense to the look of this type of magic that I want to mostly base on water. I also want to bring bubbles/ripples into its look.

For the most part, I want its uses to lie on the manipulation of weight so flight levitation and telekinesis is a common use of it.

I dont rule out the concussive nature of water though so they're good projectiles. A bunch more uses I'll show eventually haha.

QUICK NOTES - Shape-based Construction

A bit of a big one but I was thinking about this the other night (and I talked about this on stream) but I'm not so sure it's explained well through text!

I feel thinking in this sort of matter helps a lot when it comes to pushing shapes. This takes a lot of practice and needs an eye/visual library for this to work effectively. I realized you'd need to know what shapes to use and where/how to divide them.

October 2020 Update

Been a bit of a weird month on my end again! I think I've been working on acclimating to Clip Studio Paint and I feel like I'm getting there. The next challenge is figuring out how to paint and texture haha!

In other news, I think my internet has begun to stabilize itself after a few months of being weird???? I'm gonna look into having a stream test run some time and hopefully it won't blow up like last time.

QUICK NOTES -- Pose Composition

It's easy to fall into drawing the head first but starting out with another element can help with posing problems. Whenever I want to switch up my pose composing, I like to start with either of these four! There are a bunch more though and I feel your drawings follow whatever your start drawing first.

Drawing torsos first is a safe way of starting a drawing and I personally like starting with big shapes when composing that way I can figure out the size of the smaller elements!

I picked up CSP for my laptop this month when it went on sale (I didn't like the subscription bit of iPad) and these pages were spent trying to figure out how to replicate the feel of my Photoshop brushes. It's not quite there but once I'm confident with them, I hope to release them over at gumroad!

I REALLYY love the filling tools of CSP but the brush feel isn't doing it for me yet! I would love to incorporate vector brush drawing with my sketching and the absolute speed of doing flats...

September 2020 Update (Annual Membership Bonus)

Some sketch pages done on my new laptop and it's been a bit of a tough adjustment period coming from the ipad pro! Some of my PS brushes that I've imported into my ipad feels weird coming back tbh!

Also working on a display tablet that isn't the ipad pro+pencil is taking a bit of getting used to. I kinda miss the 0 parallax and input lag but I do not miss having a small space to work with.

WIP - Beastars

Oh boy, rewatching this was kinda painful haha. I’ve been chipping away at this in small bursts as I struggled a bit in making this. I don’t do this sort of style/shape language often so I suppose it makes sense the first half of the video was my getting shapes and the composition right.

I wanted to play around using as much parallel lines and diagonals but I feel that I could’ve pushed this more. I asked for some feedback over at the discord which helped!

July 2020 Update (Critique Slot Taken!)

This month has been a busy one. Not really much to update other than thinking about stuff for the brainsoup aaaand ordering a shiny new laptop! I think after a whole year of solely doing work on the iPad, I’m ready to return to doing normal computer things haha. Perhaps I can stream/host some draw/practice sessions over at the discord this time! 

Also maybe down the line is working on some projects I can’t really do on the iPad (like some storyboards?? Or animatics??? Maybe??) ...

Anime Mouth Animation Notes

Something that’s relatively easy to try! I did this when I was playing around RoughAnimator and I decided to make it a bit easier to digest.

I think this is a neat trick in limited animation commonly seen in anime where they don’t really do mouth shapes for specific sounds. For the most part, especially in conversation scenes, they use 3 mouth shapes when delivering dialogue.
