The top panel actually changed quite a bit from the thumbnail. I had initially planned a panel that was more of a straight on shot, which was fine but kind of boring. I also used a similar shot a few pages back, when Aidan was picking up the notes on page 33. So I decided to change it up by doing a top down shot.

I did a bunch of pages in a batch, which is how I'm doing one new page a day right now. I'm finding it easier to do a bunch of the same task all at once, and then go switch to the second step later.

This page I'm pretty happy with the layout I came up with! Drawing the full body Toivo took a few tries, though. I ended up going a little cartoony with it since it was working better.

Chapter 7.36

While simple, this page was a fun one to plan out and draw.

This whole sequence of pages is pretty inspired by manga, notably CLAMP stories and their usage of minimalist images and heavy blacks in serious moments. CLAMP loves to have a panel with long flowing hair for no reason other than "it's pretty."

Chapter 7.35

Here's the second page that uses Vivianne's notes. So the papers behind the silhouette of Toivo's head are blank in the original, the notes were added afterward. Maybe I'll share them separately at some point? Let me know if that sounds interesting at all.

The only other comment I have about this page is that drawing chains is annoying, but I think I figured out a good trick to drawing them. Maybe that's another thing I could make a little tutorial for at some point.

I decided to share both the original and alt version, but now that I look at it, I think I prefer the alt version. It gives him more of a reason to be pissed off.

I decided to try a different pen for the flashback panels, to give them thinner lines with some heavy black in between. I have another flashback coming up in a few chapters, so I'll have to decide if I like that stylistic choice. I liked it for the Derik pages in chapter 5, so maybe I'll refer to those again!

[nsfw] exploration

I'm planning on making a little nsfw comic featuring Toivo and Aidan in their early years, so I thought I'd do a little exploration in their designs for the time. I'm hoping to get at least a page a month done of it. For some future ideas I'm also thinking of some monster stuff, heheh. :)

The unique thing about this page is I wrote out the notes on a separate piece of paper, then added it in digitally. I realized I was going to need to show the notes again, so having them written out separately was going to be the most economical choice.

The new Clip Studio version was released, so I ended up buying it. There's quite a few new features that I like! This page was colored with their updated color blending (which is a very subtle difference, but allows for more vibrant colors), and I tested out the shading assist tool that they developed.

Not much to say about this page. I went on a short vacation recently, so I'm a bit behind on doing comic pages. I'll be catching up shortly-- I had run out of pages that I had pencilled beforehand, and I need to get them all drawn out. I'm actually very close to finishing the pencils for the rest of the chapter, which means I'll have to start getting the next chapter ready!

Fun fact for this page: instead of doing the smart thing and drawing one panel and repeating it 2 more times digitally, I instead drew the panel once and then used a light table to trace the panel a couple times. The result is probably about the same, but it felt weird to draw one panel on paper and then have the rest of the page be blank, so I decided I'd rather just draw the whole thing by hand.

Here's a little magic for ya

Fun fact, the little symbol that Toivo draws in the center of the circle is specific to Aidan's church. Toivo made a permanent circle in Aidan's church for quick escapes, and it works well to avoid the rain too. The symbol is a circle (for the church itself) combined with a little swoop like how Aidan draw's his "a" in his name.

This was supposed to go up a week ago, but with post-surgery recovery I've still been catching up on posting things on time. Sorry about that! We should be back on track now, and tomorrow's early update will be ready on time.

The tension in this chapter isn't getting any less as we hang out with Toivo.

Fun Aidan fact: he didn't learn to properly write until he started training as a cleric in his late teens. Since he wasn't reading and writing since childhood, he's very careful with his handwriting to make sure it's legible.

Guess who's back! It's me.

Recovery went (and is still going) well. I'm well enough now that I don't need to be as conservative with my movements and can get back to drawing. This page and the next one I had inked before my surgery, but the coloring didn't get done until yesterday. But I'm starting up NEW pages now. How exciting!

This is the last of the pages that I prepared before my surgery, so now it'll be a bit of slow going for early updates as I start to get back to normal. On the healing front, I'm doing well, but it's definitely limiting my ability to do normal drawing tasks, so my focus has been on other admin work and writing things instead.
