Chapter 1.02-04 - Colored

Still working on coloring these first pages. They go pretty fast when I start it up, since they're not overly complex. The pages for chapter 6 though... kinda complicated! haha.

I really love Rocky's face in the 4th panel, because he looks like a little Goomba from Mario.

Toivo has a lot of different emotions that he goes through on this page... 

This one was a lot of fun to draw. There's a big variety of expressions, which I love, and the skeleton was fun to make up. Also, the electricity is always kind of fun to squiggle on the page.

I think the biggest challenge with these pages is trying to make everything visually clear while still keeping the dark blue color theme.

Also, those of you with keen eyes may have noticed that there's a few things that don't follow the blue color palette. Notably, the crystal in Toivo's staff, and Toivo's eyes. That's intentional. I'll leave it at that for now.

I had been looking forward to coloring this scene for the entire chapter. I got a taste of it at the start of the chapter, with the cover illustration, and I have been anxiously waiting to use it since.

One reader pointed out how throughout this scene, there gets to be more and more specks throughout the page, implying a more sinister undertone throughout. While I didn't actively think that while I was making these pages, I do think that I kind of instinctively did that as I created the pages. This information isn't supposed to be pleasant for Rosemary to receive, and adding the texture of ink spray helps get that across a little more accurately.

I don't think there's anything special about this page that I have any notes on. It's a wash and repeat of the last page, though I did use a lot of ink splatters and dry ink techniques. I also had to come up with a color palette for Derik.

A lot of this chapter has been experimenting with inking techniques on the front half of the pages, but there's about equal experimentation with coloring techniques in the back end. While these pages don't seem particularly complex, I struggled with getting the lighting and page to feel natural. It's supposed to feel like artificial lighting, but getting artificial lighting to look attractive while still maintaining the feel is pretty difficult. This one is a little later than I had wanted, but also it's a 2 page spread so I guess it's making 2 pages at once.

I'm very excited for this, and I had a lot of fun with the inks on this one. I took a bunch of pictures while I was making it, so I may make a post with the progression pictures. None of the photos are very good (I don't have great lighting in my office) but it is fun to look at.

My favorite part of this is Aidan's belly and Toivo's back folds. I'd like to get a little more in depth with some of these drawings but I think I need to build up to that, so right now we're just doing 'vague bedroom shapes' for a background.

Sorry for the radio silence on this tier, but I was just trying to figure out what drawings to actually post next. I have a backlog of stuff saved up, but there's a lot of pictures that are, unfortunately, also spoilers? SO I have to wait to post those. :/ 

These ones are much older, back when Toivo was being used as a D&D character. The chest scars are relevant to that D&D campaign, and no longer part of his design.

Chapter 1.01 - Colored (again)

So, a while ago, I made a post about coloring Chapter 1, and I hadn't worked on any more since then. The short story is: life happened! Got a house! Moved into the house! But one of my goals for this year is getting a book made, and that means I gotta revisit these pages.

The biggest thing that came out of these pages is playing with magic effects. On page 17, I did a lot of effects to get that lightning magic to really pop, and Rosemary's magic is something I played a little bit with.
