Wagler's monotreme river pterodactyl

Full colour illustration of Pterodactylus as a swimming monotreme, as hypothesised by Johann Wagler (1800-1832).

Wagler saw pterosaurs; alongside ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and present-day monotremes; as members of a unique vertebrate "class" which he named Gryphi.

Step by step process of a spec-evo illustration

Here is my artistic process; measuring, drawing, inking, scanning, cleaning, and screen-toning an illustration depicting Pterodactylus as a swimming monotreme, by Johann Wagler (1800-1832).

Wagler saw pterosaurs; alongside ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and present-day monotremes; as members of a unique vertebrate "class" which he named Gryphi.

Alien insect with hinged "desk lamp" articulation

Created for generous patron - L. C. - who asked for an alien quasi-insect with 6 pairs of legs and 4 pairs of wings. Easily one of the most complicated characters I designed - the hinged body allows it to "clamp" back into a single monocoque form when flying.

Please let me know if you want me to illustrate your aliens this way too!
