Dorico Animation Prep Example

I thought you might find it interesting to see me preparing the opening shot of the video. I accidentally forgot to turn on my good mic, so I sound a little mumbly at times.

I would have recaptured this, only there is one unexpectedly funny bit that I didn't want to lose.

Let me know if you want me to do more of this stuff.

Down to the Audio Recordings for Dorico

Many of you have asked me to go into some more detail about my process for making videos so I thought I'd record myself reading a first take for the intro to my new Dorico video.

For these software review videos, which are the toughest ones to make, I generally get my script nailed down and all my research, video capture and artwork complete before I start recording audio. It makes editing much faster, which allows me to focus on pacing and flow.

For other videos, my process can b...

Dorico Update & After

A few people have asked how my latest video is going, so I thought I'd give a small update. I've now entered into the proper editing phase and I think the overall length is going to be somewhere between 40-50 minutes. It's a bit of a beast and I'll be happy when I'm done with it. However, I'm pretty sure it's also going to be the most educational and comprehensive notation video I've made.

I'll be posting lots of little segments here over the coming weeks, like I did for the MuseScore v...

2020 Update

Hi everyone!

So joining MuseScore had a definite impact on my YouTube productivity in December (travelling to Russia, understanding the team dynamics of the company, meeting users and doing a lot of up-front design planning.)

However, I'm over the initial hump and have been hammering away at my Dorico video every morning and evening during the holidays. The script is an absolute monster and I've a feeling the video is going to be a long one. I think it's the most instructive and w...

Dorico Review Underway

Hey everyone, I've started work on this in earnest. One of the things I'm doing right now is user-testing the app to get a sense of how easy it is to work with out of the box.

If anyone would be interesting in recording themselves using the app for the first time (with or without your face, as you please), DM me and I'll forward some info to you.

Hopefully, this one will be out relatively soon. I want to avoid another 3 month delay.

Responding to demand... my first Eurovision video

Although there are parts I like, I'm not a giant fan of this. I didn't get the format right until the second one, I think :)

Lot's of half-explained assertions. It was only my third ever video... Enjoy!

General Update (David Bruce MuseScore & Dorico)

Hello all - and welcome those new patrons who recently joined!

There's been a lot of stuff going on that has kept me busy over the last few months. The most important of these is that I've been negotiating a lot with the people at MuseScore and I'm now finally in a place where I can quit the day job at Microsoft and begin working on their editor instead. So, I'm going to be heading up the design of MuseScore from November onwards. There are multiple advantages to this, not least of whic...

Another piece of music I use a lot in my videos

I created this music specifically to chill people out after the whole 'Shostakovich puking blood' thing. I find it works really well with VO and helps lend some levity to whatever subject I'm talking about.

Repeats a lot. Nothing new happens after roughly the 1 minute mark.

New Video is Out!

Really sorry about the delay with this one. It was insanely hard to put together and I made some dumb script choices - like a Humpty Dumpty sketch that took more than a week to illustrate and animate.

Anyway, it's done and you can expect the next one a lot sooner!

Thanks for the support!

Corporate Music Update. Not Long Now! (& Other Updates)

Hey everyone. Just to let you know, my new video is pretty far along now and there's only a small amount of editing left to do. I'm beginning to feel like this could be out in a week.

Also, I'm headed to record an Orchestra with David Bruce on the 10th. That video should be out on his channel shortly afterwards.

I've also begun writing the script for my new video about Dorico (finally). My aim is to get it done a lot quicker than the others. I've managed to clear out a lot of the ...

Another Piece of Music I Use in My Videos

Here's another one I use a lot. It's my 'go to' when I want to wake people up after I've delivered a lot of information.

Only problem with it is that it's a little bit complicated for VO accompaniment. Whenever I use it, I keep the volume way down.

Orchestral piece for upcoming video with David Bruce, Adam Neely, Ben Levin & Bec Plexus

You may have seen David Bruce's video '5 Composers, 1 Theme'  a few months ago. Well, we're doing it again, only this time, we're writing for orchestra.

The idea behind our pieces was that David assigned each of us a motive based on the number of syllables in our name. Mine ending up sounding a bit like a fanfare (Tan-ta-crul!), so I made something that sounded a little bit like a bombastic superhero theme.

Attached the main score below. The midi was produced using NotePerfor...

Some More Music I Use on My Channel

Here's the first piece of BG music I used when I first began my channel. It's an old demo from 2006 that I never got around to finishing. It's actually meant to be a full song with vocals.

I've stopped using this music on the channel now but I thought you mind find it interesting all the same.

Rehearsal of my Upcoming Piano Trio (Performed by the Fidelio Trio)

This is a tiny snippet of the rehearsal for my Piano Trio (titled: CIMIM) which will be performed on July 20th in Dublin.

Anyone who happens to be in Dublin at that time, let me know. I've still not been told the venue or time yet :)

We're going to be filming this performance in full, so I'm planning to make a video about it shortly afterwards.

One thing about this rehearsal, the acoustics are obviously rubbish but even so, the skill of the players was really something to be...

Corporate Music

Hi there,

So, I've begun writing my next video which will be about corporate music - or more precisely - the music that companies and politicians use for public relations messages, internal training videos, product launches and really saccharine, inspirational adverts.

One of my main motivations was to write a whole bunch of this type of music to discover where the cliches are and how they work.

Here's a demo version (still need to record the actual guitar and mix it properl...
