I know I’m not as good as Stephen about posting when I should, and I apologize for that. It’s part family responsibilities (I have two kids, Stephen abhors children), part lack of creativity, especially when compared to my counterpart. I thought I’d get more done being housebound, but it turns out it’s harder than I thought with the rest of my family also stuck at home. I normally work from home and am a stay at home dad, so I want to know why all these people are in my ‘offic...

So the last Deep Dive on the beholder almost broke us. It was a huge undertaking and quite honestly, we didn’t realize what we had gotten ourselves into. So we’d like to thank everyone that voted on our Patreon and decided to take it easy on us with this Deep Dive selection, the Nothic. These fun and underrated creatures have only been around since 3.5e, but are worth taking a look at… even if they are a bit horrifying to interact with.

Our monster thursday brings in a monster that needs no introduction. -Stephen
After last thursday's post on Beholders, Chris & I were pretty beholdered-out... but I knew what I had to create for this Monster Thursday. There are so many awesome and amazing beholder-kin that I just had to recreate a few of our favorites for the D&D 5e system.
I am happy to show off the:
Eye of the Deep, a strange deep-sea crustacean...

Here is another post in which I ramble and finally decide on something - always make sure your players are dreaming big and having fun. - Stephen
There comes a time when your players do something impressive, like bring down a dragon or drop-kick an ambassador into a bottomless pit, and you start telling them all the treasure they are getting. The fighter, excitedly bouncing around in their seat, wondering if they'll finally have enough money to afford that sweet plate ...

Due to the length of this Deep Dive, we are still applying the finishing touches to the last few editions. Here are the first few editions of the Beholder, and we hope you check out the rest of it on Thursday! -Stephen
One of the original monsters in Dungeons and Dragons, this creature comes from the minds of the creators of the game, Rob Kuntz and Gary Gygax - though the creature was made by Rob’s brother Theron Kuntz, and fleshed out by Gygax befo...

It's been a while since I last rambled on about something on my mind... well, here we go. - Stephen
Technology is weird and I am often surprised when things are invented in our history and how they develop. An example of that would be the airplane, in 1903 the Wright brothers 'flew' for 12 seconds and by the end of the day were flying for 59 seconds. In 1915, the earliest known aerial victory with a machine gun was documented. In just 12 years the airplane coul...

Ratfolk are a strange choice to devote a Monster Thursday too, and I get it. Who needs rats? Well, sometimes you need a really weird monster to throw at your party (like the Mindcleaver) and you start thinking about where they came from. Lets jump to the conception of these guys.
My party was going through a dungeon developed by an archmage of a questionable mental state. The dungeon was called The To...

The Death Knight has lived in the shadow of the lich for much of its existence, which is unfair to this powerful undead. No one in their right mind wants to encounter an unholy warrior who is dressed in black plate armor with gleaming red eyes that stare straight through to your soul. The Death Knight may not be given the same amount of love that the lich has over the editions, but it sure as hell has better art!
In another example of early Dungeons and Dragons bor...

A few weeks ago, we explored Mount Celestia and its seven mountainous layers and their inhabitants known as the archons. These are the celestial, lawful good petitioners who travel the slopes in search of enlightenment.
While your character, or your player's, may never get a chance to climb to the very top of Mount Celestia, there can be all sorts of reasons for meeting celestials. Maybe you want something mo...

The Lich has never been the most powerful creature in Dungeons & Dragons. First, there was Demogorgon, and no, it’s not THE Demogorgon, just Demogorgon. Next, there is the Great Wyrm Prismatic Dragon with its ridiculous CR 66 from 3rd edition. It’s a really good thing that they get along with most humanoids since it is literally a god killer. Of course, we also have the most well known of the powerful creatures, the Tarrasque with a CR 30, the same as that of Tiamat.

Sometimes a party stumbles onto a farm and you want to sprinkle in a little of the wondrous and the strange. Here are a few "animals" that you can sprinkle into your farms, your wilderness, and even your cities.
Not every monster in this pdf is a friendly farm animal though, giant sheep love to ram people off the side of mountains, bees from the Nine Hells only care about corruption, and the plan...

Recently had someone ask me why I hate bards... I don't hate bards, I'm just disappointed in them. - Stephen
Ah, another attention-grabbing title, another week of me grumbling. This time, I've had some coffee, but that won't save the bard from my wrath!
So, why does the Bard suck? Despite what you might be thinking, it isn't because I find their lack of ability to deal much damage a bad thing. That's one of their strengths, they can be an effective combatant in comb...

So, if you haven't figured out by now, I love the old AD&D & 2nd edition cursed items. Those versions were D&D expert level, compared to 5th edition, which is easy mode. While this cursed magic item did not exist in those editions, they are based on the idea that cursed items should have a curse (or curses) on them that made the player think really hard about using it.
And yes, the Holy Grail Rabbit is based on the rabbit from Monty Python's Holy Grail movie. Enjoy!

We are looking at another one of Dungeons & Dragons most iconic monsters, the Wraith. It’s been around since the beginning of the game, feared by players and characters alike for its devastating life drain ability. In a world filled with ghosts, specters, and wights, the Wraith stands alone as the shadowy creature that can create its legion of incorporeal creatures to fight alongside it. Oh, how jealous the wight must be with its pathetic pack of zombies shuffling slo...

I've complained before that there just aren't enough dragons in a game titled "Dungeons & Dragons", and if I have to make a thousand more dragons before I think there are enough... well, at least then there'll be enough dragons.
These dragons are not like true dragons, and provide a bit more dragon stuff you can throw into a normal campaign. If a party is going against a true dragon, the...

Some of the most useful baddies in Dungeons & Dragons just doesn't get the love they deserve, and I'm talking about Hobgoblins. Where is their campaign? Where are their vast armies being destroyed by a group of 3 to 6 adventurers who are better described as "murder-hobos" and in high school voted "Least Likely To Become Big Damn Heroes and Save The World"?
You probably know where this is going. See, ...
