The waves of turkey-size dinosaurs(?) hit us while Sergeant Kemp passed out guns and ammo. Really bad timing on their part.
I had an M4 carbine with the M203 grenade launcher attached, and I dropped a pill in the middle of the biggest clump of the cluckers. High explosive, not the most effective choice of round, but what I had loaded.
I switched to the carbine, firing three-round bursts and took out another dozen gobble-gobbles before the attack was over. Three or four guys had be...

We left the field a little dejected because we had just lost our last game of the season. If we’d won, we’d be going to the finals, but we lost twice in the best of three first round, so we were out.
It seemed a shame, late August and no more organized baseball for most of us until college leagues got started in February. Well, it would be worse than that in some parts of the country where they would have to wait till March or April. There would be winter ball played in the Caribbea...

The idea of me having a date with Leland Frick, the team photographer, almost caused a riot. By this time, there seemed to be sixteen girls —including me, damnit!— left at the party, and all of them had one thing to discuss: my supposed date.
At the top of their lungs — and cheerleaders live to be loud. All of them —again, including me— had something to say about it.
“Well, what was I supposed to do? He was all upset about the highlight reel he shot showing me taking d...

Part 6
“Go away,” I mumbled, sticking my head further into my pillow.
“Amanda!” hissed my annoying sister. “You need to get up!”
I pulled the pillow over my head. “Just go away.”
Cathy began tugging on my arm, trying to pull me off my cot. “You have tryouts in a couple of hours! Not only do you need to eat something, we have to do your make-up.”
With one eye, I looked up from my face-embedded pillow and snarled, “You’re...

I’m not a stalker. Well, ordinarily, I’m not. But I had begun to feel like one after following a girl for four or five blocks through the twisty cobblestone streets of Old Town.
She was a small woman with a tidy figure, busty but slender elsewhere. I’m no expert on women’s fashion, so all I can say is she wore a sort of short-sleeved, powder-blue one-piece garment that had a hood partly pulled up over her curly red hair. She had clonky-heeled, strappy sandals and bare legs., des...

Rod Pick stared. Linda had pointed me out and called me her sister Joni, but it didn’t seem to have registered. He kept staring at my chest.
I’d been worried he would recognize me, but it now appeared he was honestly just interested in two things. Annalisa poked him to move with the flow of the line they were in.
I didn’t know whether to be annoyed or amused. He actually startled when she poked him, as if he had completely forgotten she was there. Was this going to be an eas...

Part 5
I just sat in my office chair, stunned. How the hell did I wind up with a date with a boy? A boy I barely know. This coming Friday. I… I can’t date a boy.
“Hey, Amanda!” whispered a voice from my doorway. “Did you call him?”
I nodded. “Yes, I did.”
Her eyes bright with excitement, Cathy said, “I want to hear everything! Come to my office!”
I frowned. “We have to go all the way to the girls' restroom at Taco Beuno?...

As we got into Jonathan’s car, Cathy looked at me and asked, “Are you going to call him?”
I shook my head. “No. I mean, why would I? I don’t know him, and he’s a boy.”
Cathy laughed as we seated ourselves in the car. “That’s why you talk to him. To get to know him. He seems to be interested in you. And you like him.”
I frowned at Cathy. “What do you mean, I like him? Like I said, I don’t even know him. I wouldn’t kno...

The vehicles of our little squadron were parked around the edges of a bosque wood. That’s an Arizona phrase meaning an isolated piece of forest covering just a few acres, usually all one kind of tree. I didn’t know what kind of trees these were, but if I had to guess I’d say cottonwoods; they had that white look to the underside of their leaves.
A creek started from a spring in the middle of the wood and flowed out, heading through a well-worn channel toward the river in the middl...

Still rattled from my encounter at the Dew Drop Inn, I slowly walked into my house. My parents were sitting on the couch watching TV. At first they didn’t really look up. Mom said, “Hey Randy. How did the shoot go?”
I took a few steps toward them. My blouse was still pulled open. With a cry breaking in my voice, I said, “Mom...

A quick glance told me Joanna had found time to throw a shortie nightgown over her nudity, making her twice as naked. “You hit’em high, I’ll hit’em low, Petey,” she yelled. I felt sure she had grabbed their attention.
One of the few pieces of wisdom about fighting I got from my Dad was that if you say anything in a fight, make it a lie, so I did the opposite of what she suggested. I ducked under the first guy’s arms and hit the second guy hip-high, being sure to drive my hel...

“Oh. There you are.” Charlotte said from the doorway. I have a really tough time referring to my former wife as ‘mom.’ It grates on me.
I was at my computer in the room we had originally set up as my home office. It’s going to turn into my new bedroom. We could probably put twin beds in Cathy’s room, but she doesn’t want to share a room with a “freak.”
I turned around from my computer to look at Charlotte standing in the doorway. ...

I handed the glasses back meekly after staring through them for at least half a minute. Streep and Helmstead took another brief look before the lieutenant snapped the lens covers back on.
“It’s a really big…bird?” I suggested. “And it was flying away there at the end.”
Sgt. Streep did that eyebrow thing but didn’t say anything else while putting the binoculars back in their case.
Lt. Helmstead smiled at me. “Nice try,” he said. “But a bird that big would ...

Chapter 34: Closing Remarks
The roar of the crowd was only slightly muffled by the curtains as they drew closed.
I'd survived.
I was down a leg for the moment, but in a fantasy world that could be fixed.
We were battered, and at the end of our ropes, but we had gotten out. Our goal wasn't completed, but we would live to try another day, and really, after how things had gone, that was all we could ask.
At least, most of us had survived.
Once...

Lt. Helmstead spoke to me without lowering his field glasses. “I guess we’re not in Kansas anymore, Lucie.”
“Utah, sir,” I said seriously. “We’re not in Utah anymore.”
Sergeant Streep grunted, about a number four, amused but impatient. “Don’t sass the El Tee, Private Lucie,” he warned without a hint of the amusement his grunt had indicated.
I shrugged to stop myself from saying, “Yes, sir.” Just ten weeks out of Basic Training, but even I knew you d...

I felt like I was floating. I had no concept of the passage of time. I had nightmares of tiny bugs nibbling at my brain. Strange sounds would rise and fall. Lights would flash, sometimes dim and others brilliantly bright. I also felt as if I was burning up. I struggled to wake up, but I couldn’t force my eyes open. Sometimes I felt like I was falling, and other times as if I was drowning. I tried desperately to suck in a breath. It was a nightmare I couldn...

It put a damper on the festivities, the news that there were guys downstairs.
“Beverly!” Joanna spat. “I’m going to pull her scalp off and have it made into a wig!”
Joanna’s Aunt Beverly had been on the phone earlier. Had she called up some friends and invited them to crash the party? Probably.
I didn’t understand the family dynamic of the Linklaters, but Beverly seemed to hate everyone. What was she doing here anyway? Were Joanna’s parents so clueless that t...

“Hey, Colin. What’s up?”
Standing on my front porch, Colin said in a serious tone, “I just wanted to check up on you. See how you were doing.”
I shook my head and chuckled at him. “You could have just called. We got home yesterday afternoon.”
Stepping through the front door, he said, “I wanted to see you too.”
