Chords For Devastating Shoegaze

It's been a while since I've done a Shoegaze progression! This one combines my new found love of open tunings with capos with some Whirr style Shoegaze tones. I wanted to create something that sounds heavy, intense, and huge. Hopefully this goes to show that open tunings are useful for a variety of genres and it's really all about how you arrange your ideas. Happy practicing!

Chords For Dreamy Midwest Emo Vibes

An exploration of some mellow, dreamy sounds, in a nice midwest emo tuning. I'm still trying to find the right balance of chord style, complexity, and aesthetic, but I'm fairly happy with this as the start of something. Hope you are able to get some cool chords out of this!

Chords To Amaze Your Bandmates

A selection of very pretty "twinkly" chords arranged into a short progression in FACGCE (capo 1). I've tried to go for chords that have a refreshing sound that is simple to play yet emotionally complex. Hope you have fun learning them.

Learn This Riff To Help Practice Pull Offs!

A little etude that I wrote today to help me practice some pull-offs, admittedly this is probably somewhere in the intermediate to advanced range of difficulty but it's a nice exercise because it gets each finger involved in the pull-off motions.

Chords For A Rainy Day Lo-Fi Beat

A cool collection of super chill chords that are commonly found / heard in guitar based lo-fi hip hop beats. I've added a few passing chord ideas in too to spice things up a bit. Hope you enjoy!

The Most Fun (To Play) Riff I've Written In 2022?

Wrote this little riff this morning, it sounds pretty similar to some other things I've written lately, but this one has a really fun, steady, groove in 15/8. Lots of fun to play!

Chords For Nasty Midwest Emo

Some fun, midwesty, ideas in DAEAC#E. This was a bit inspired by some lessons that I've had with my Monday private students. I thought it would be a good challenge for myself to try and get more comfortable working with a capo. Hope you like the chords!

Smooth 9th And 7th Chords You Need To Know

A look at more essential chord vocabulary. I find that the best way build a more substantive system for working with chord shapes is to begin to understand their role within a key. Hopefully learning these scale sequences is helping with that!

Chords For A Tiny Moving Cloud

A saw a small cloud moving gently past my window and I found that somehow inspiring. Here's a little song that captures the mood of that cloud moving from point A to point B. Musically, this song tries to capture the slow evolution of simple triads mixed in with some diminished chords and 7th chords. Hope you like it! By the way, this progression has nothing to do with the band Tiny Moving Parts haha.

Japanese Math Rock Tuning Meets Shoegaze

Trying out some Shoegaze styling riffing in one of my favourite alternate tunings: DADF#AD. I found this tuning through an Uchi Conbini song.

Chords To Make You Feel Really Good

As the title says, a series of chord progressions that are really uplifting and fun to listen to (but maybe a bit challenging to play...). This one also features some heavier usage of 6th chords just to mix things up a bit from my usual 7th and 9th heavy stuff. Hope you like it!

The Jazzy "Power Chords" You Need To Know

A look at another set of voicings for shell voicing 7th chords. These voicings are a bit more spread out (as in they're voiced as 1-7-3, instead of 1-3-7), giving them a nice airy sound. I think these are super versatile shapes and are definitely worth learning, regardless of the style you play.

Chords For That Buttery Smooth Vibe

Mixing things up this week with a jazzy progression that would sound great for neo soul, jazz, some mellow sections in math rock, and maybe some indie stuff. This progression features a lot of modal mixture, pivoting on notes, passing chords, etc. Hope you have fun learning it, it's quite fun to play!

Chords For EASY Shoegaze!

Another day, another fun Shoegaze progression! This set of chords is the culmination of an idea I've been wanting to do for a while: a Shoegaze friendly progression that was deliberately written to be really easy to play. Hopefully this is something that works for beginners. Happy practicing!

MORE Maj7 Chords To Make You Sound PRO

A follow up on my previous video on drop 3+2 maj7 chords and their inversions. The previous video looked at shapes for the E+A string, but this video finishes things up with shapes for the D string. These are really pretty sounds that can help you cut through in your band mix. Happy practicing!

Chords For The Saddest Part Of The Movie

After my semi annual Lord of The Rings trilogy binge, I've become obsessed with this i-VI-III-VII progression in a minor key. Howard Shore uses this progression in many of the pivotal emotional sequences in the movies. It's amazing how powerful this progression is at evoking emotion. Some key things to note however, in the progression, I think it's important to play the III chord in 1st inversion so that you get a nice descending bassline moving from the VI down to III in step. Also, I took s...

Chords For Emotional Shoegaze

In this progression, i've tried to put together something that uses a lot of really key shoegaze shapes while still trying to make something that is unique. If you are looking for shapes to use in many different ideas, I really recommend digging into the major 7 shapes, V7sus4 shapes, and some of the shell voicing ideas. Have fun practicing!

Mi7 Shapes That Will Make You Sound PRO

Part two in the series on 7th chords and their alternate forms!

This is a (semi) quick exploration of minor 7th chords and their inversions. For most guitarists, root position chords tend to be the main focus. However, if you are looking to advance your sound and add more variety / emotional complexity to your chord playing, this is the place to start.

Chords For Beautiful Shoegaze Tones

Another Shoegaze exploration, this time experimenting with DADF#AE tuning. I usually use this tuning to write Math Rock and Emo stuff, but I think it works really well for this style too! On a personal note, I'm quite happy with how this short composition has turned out, I think it might be my best (of the Shoegaze progressions) so far. Hope you like it!

Chords To Learn Before 2022

Hey! Here are some chords that every guitarist should know. If you know these already, that's excellent, but if you don't, I want you to take an hour or two before the New Year and commit these to memory! These chords can serve as the basis for music creation. So, after you learn them, try to mix and match them and play around with them in order to create some music. Also, these chords will help you to play easily play with, and compliment other guitarists, whether they play Math Rock, Jazz, ...

Chords For Epic Shoegaze

Cheers,

Chords For Shoegaze Feels

A continuation of my Shoegaze writing foray. In this one, I stick to the quarter note chugging feel but instead, I try a progression with some different shapes and more major 9 chords. Surprisingly, I don't tend to hear major 9 used quite as much as major 7 or add9 in this style so I thought I'd try and see what I can do with it (since it's like my go to chord haha)
