Watch Greslin Respawn, Ep 7: Ain't That A Kick In The Head

In the last episode, I had finally ventured into the suburbs to pick through the ruined remains of Sanctuary Hills. Aside from a slightly confused Vault Tec salesman and a house of feral ghouls, the trip was fairly undramatic until I approached a house with a rooftop sniper and a sweet root cellar shelter in the back.

Unfortunately the sniper didn't really want to give up his base, and I was badly hurt, irradiated to ghoulish levels, diseased, ill equipped, and running out of tim...

How To Get Ideas

I've had this issue rattling around in my brain this week, coming up in conversation, appearing thematically in my web searches, screaming for attention.. and since this place has sort of turned into my current brain dump location.. well, you get to hear all about it.

When you ask a creative person, any creative person, where they get their ideas from, you are just literally stepping into one of the most trite clichés ever created. No one has an answer; or, at least, no one has a real ...

New Release: Squawk Boxes

If you've played Fallout 4 for any length of time, you've seen all the radios. Radios on desks. Radios on walls. Radios on the floor. Even the occasional ham radio shoved in a corner somewhere, desperately seeking out the slightest signal that might suggest another living soul in a Boston bunker somewhere.

Squawk Boxes transforms almost all of them into snitches, waiting for you to get within range to start attracting the attention of enemy NPCs.

If a radio...

Watch Greslin Respawn, Ep 6: The End of Suburbia

This time around I decided to do some recon north of Concord, seeking meds and a better shelter while I still can. I also need to know more about the FROST world outside of Concord: I've already made the mistake several times now of assuming that things will be the same as in vanilla Fallout 4, and every time I turned out to be crushingly wrong.

Insult To Injury 2.0.2.1 Released

A new release of Insult To Injury is now available on the GreslinGames Discord

Nothing startlingly different from 2.0.1, except that I have opened up a lot of the internals of all three ITI scripts to modders via script properties. This means many more opportunities for compatibility patching, as well as for doing interesting compound heal effects (such as, for example, a heal ite...

Why Good Isn't Always The Goal

Any time you do creative work - that is, work that requires you to go out on a limb to make your own risky judgments about what is good, what isn't, and why - you will inevitably run up against the worry that what you are doing is just garbage.

This really applies to any sort of creative work, but since you're probably reading this because you're somehow into the game modding scene, I'm going to talk about coding and making game mods.

I'm as bad about this as anyone. Is this i...

Watch Greslin Respawn, Ep 5: Listening To Lexington

So this time out, I decided to burn the last few hours of daylight and pop over to Lexington to see - and hear - what was going on over there. Music off, VATS limited to energy weapons, stealth bar and enemy ID HUD disabled.. I don't know I'm in combat until the bullet is whizzing past my head. Or until some crazed raccoon decides he's had just about enough of everyone's crap today.

New FROST update, PANPC 2.0.8-dev1, ITI 2.0.1, iVATS.  And Mutant Menagerie.

Insult to Injury 2.0 Released!

I've been working on this for months, but I'm happy to finally be able to ship this out to you: an almost complete rewrite of my 2018 Fallout 4 mod, Insult to Injury. This mod attempts to replace the game's entire limb health management system (which can be best described as "napping makes broken leg heal magic gooder") with something more resembling that found in the Fallout: New Vegas hardcore system.

GreslinGames News: March 2022

I'm sitting here at my desk in California today, enjoying the cool breezes coming in from the backyard and the smell of orange blossoms. Our tree had a huge crop this year and I still need to get out there with the pole and get them down. Maybe this weekend. For now, spring is here and it's nice to get some sunshine again.

In case you haven't checked in at GreslinGames much lately, here's what March looked like.

Watch Greslin Respawn, Ep 3: The True Value of a Good Rifle

Sigh.

Episode 3 of my hardcore FROST/PANPC run is up, and I'm still struggling to get my homeless rear productively out of Concord. Those guys are still patrolling Main Street and throwing a few bullets in my back every time they see me, and on top of that, I'm starving, irradiated, and it's dark. But at least I'm starting to get better at blocking and I have a combat rifle now.

I'm starting to come to a couple of conclusions, namely that not all fights are worth picking, because ...

More on PANPC 2.0.7 Deathclaw Changes

I've gotten a few questions about the specific changes I made to Deathclaws in PANPC 2.0.7. They were fairly extensive - this pass definitely wasn't a small round of tweaks around the edges of the AI.  They're much more dangerous now.

Generally speaking, this is what I did:

Added ranged combat stances. PANPC has always treated Deathclaws as a weird hybrid, a tactical wildlife creature, basically a smarter dog. And like dogs, PANPC DCs only had melee combat st...

New Video Series: Watch Greslin Respawn

So I'm going to let you in on a dirty little secret of game modding. Keep it between us.

Truth is, many of us mod authors stopped actually playing the games we mod years ago. We think of Creation Kit/FO4Edit as the real game, and we spend far more time coding and testing code than we do embarking on adventures across the Wasteland. The fun for us is in building fun experiences for you.

I haven't actually played Fallout 4 in any solid way since maybe early 2019. And people have not...

New Mod Release: "iVATS"

After a couple of decades of doing creative work, one thing I've learned - and relearned, and relearned - is that only time ultimately can judge a project.

Popularity is cruel illusion: what everyone loves today may fizzle and vanish very quickly, and the idea that everyone hated at first may age surprisingly well and earn a dedicated fan base over the long term. You just never know.

Time is your true audience, patience the only real process.

Fundraiser To Help A Friend And Community Member

I don't normally do this sort of thing, but there are certain people in life who are worth making exceptions for, and one of those people is my friend Nikita Lakshin. If you have spent any time on GreslinGames, you may have seen him around under the name Ebby Exgaspimaru. He's one of our moderators.

Nikita and I go way back in the Fallout mod community, back to at least the early New Vegas days, and I've always known him to be one of the good guys. Smart, compassionate,...

What Game Modding Taught Me About Truth

I wouldn’t consider myself a religious man. Talk of God, sacred spaces, divine intervention in the world: all those things earn a cynical side-eye from me, as mantras of comfort that are fine for those who find comfort in them. But they’ve never been meaningful ideas in my own life, and so I am especially confused and somewhat unprepared when I stumble across the esoteric edge of life experience myself.

Truth can be a dodgy concept. However, there are moments that make me realize th...

PANPC 2.0.4 War Games: Irradiated Steel

Just posted a new war game video, per request of Patreon supporter Zelesthia.  This time around we're at Cambridge Police Department, putting Legendary Brotherhood up against boss-level and Legendary feral ghouls.

I was honestly quite surprised about how things happened.  Ferals in combat usually end up being a turkey shoot, and even at Legendary levels, they were still no match for the boys and girls in steel.. until some Legendary Glowing Ones joined the party and ev...

PANPC 2.0.4 Released: Full Arena Mode!

So Arena Mode is done for now. All of the AI scripts have now been updated to the 2.0.x optimized Base version, so you should see a performance gain as well as faster decisions by the AIs. And I put a keyword leash on some NPCs.

I'll get a video done, probably on Tuesday, showcasing Arena. Then I'll resume war games and - hopefully - redirect my attention more fully towards PACE again.

As usual, you can get 2.04 on the 2022-02-20 19:58:12 +0000 UTC View Post

PANPC 2.0.4 Preview: More on Arena Mode

Continuing work this week on Arena Mode, and I'm hoping to have this finished and 2.0.4 done and out the door this weekend or early next week. But I'm happy enough with where we're at now that I wanted to share it a bit.

In addition to the more developed version of Arena Mode, I am also in the process now of updating all the variant AI scripts to the optimized Base version. I'm also adding a feature for proactive targeting of non-PANPC NPCs. Fully explained in the video.

PANPC 2.0.3 Released: New Arena Mode!

This week I did a lot of work in PANPC to improve the threat identification and response systems of the Base AI variant. I just wasn't happy with how cocky Deathclaws were getting.

Most of the optimizations and improvements since 2.0 have been in the Base script, and I've decided that rather than attempting to do all those same fixes in the other variants, I'm simply going to finish work on Base and then recreate new versions of all the variants on that code base.  I did something ...

PANPC 2.0.3 (dev) War Games: Deathclaw Mayhem @ Boston Airport

Doing some PANPC work this week on Base AI tactics and responses to one-hit threats, such as Deathclaws.  It's not quite there yet, but it is a substantial improvement over 2.0.2: the AIs now spread out more effectively to make kill zones, make better use of their long range rifle assets, and seem to confuse the hell out of the PANPC Deathclaw AI.

Taking a break from Vault 111 exterior, this war game is happening at Boston Airport.  Would you like to see me run a war g...
