First of all, I wanted to let you know I made an improvement so that there are less clicks when taking care of monster girls. Here's a gif of it:

This should reduce clicks.

Now I want to know if you would like a streamlined way of harvesting crops? Imagine you could go to sleep and then there is a button to harvest right there. You wouldn't have to "Front Yard -> Field -> Harvest -> Harvest -> Dining Room -> Bedroom -> Sleep" anymore. It would just be "Harvest -> Harvest -> Sleep."

A week has passed since my previous release, but v0.08.00 of Monster Girl Farmer still adds a variety of new features. 

• A lot of people will be happy to hear I added Enoki's picture to the game, and it's beautiful.
• Just in time for Halloween, I've created a spooky scene involving a well. Good luck finding the secret. (The secret is sexual, but barely. It's more atmospheric and fun.) I'll add a cheat to the game so you can jump straight to this new scene.
• The pink orchard now has its own exploration scenes. It didn't really make sense to find ponds or green plants there.
• The author of the scene you are reading is now displayed. So far, I'm the only author for the game, but now I feel comfortable asking for community contributions. Interested in adding something to the game? Let me know.
• Now you can leave me feedback at any point by clicking on a button on the sidebar. The end of game/character surveys still exist.

Announcing Monster Girl Farmer version 0.07.00

This release focused mainly on new features: There is an energy bar instead of energy blocks, and there are now status effects in the game! The status effects took a long time to code, but I think it was worth it because it adds depth to the game. For example, if you mess up really bad with a monster girl's care activities, you could get a bad status effect.

Content-wise, I added a new random scene when you explore. It's more of a side quest than a scene, really. There are many choices and secrets to discover (including some lewdness). If you run into a giant statue of an angel in the middle of the forest, you've found it.

Now, there are many random scenes in the game, so chances are low you'll run into this one. But, I envision many quests with similar complexity in the future. It's going to feel like a Western RPG (e.g., Fallout/Skyrim) where you've got multiple quests in progress at the same time. For convenience, I've added a cheat to jump straight to this quest for those that don't want to take the time exploring just to find it.

I think from now till the end of the month, I'm going to add a new random scene of similar complexity and squeeze in some quick features, then do another small release -- if everything goes according to plan, that will be the third released this month. I'll also create a poll so that $1 pledges can vote on which character I add next. 

For this release, I finally started a change log, so you can see a summary of what I've just said. Oh, and Zraxi's picture of Enoki is almost done!

Hello all! Maybe I'm the only one feeling this way, but I dislike releasing once a month. When I was working on Academy of Fetishes, I think I usually had two releases a month. I'd like to be able to go back to that pace, but I think it's going to be difficult to do that if I try to work on features and writing a new character in the same release. 

So I'm going to try a little experiment: for this next release, I'm just going to focus on features. Here are some things I have in mind: the ability to sell items; harvesting could give you produce instead of money, and you could sell the produce or use it in quests; more elaborate exploration scenes -- okay, I guess this is kind of writing too, not just a feature -- that have interesting effects, like increasing your maximum energy, reducing the energy costs for growing crops, going to town, finding special shops, etc.; being able to build something on your farm with Amy's shop; etc. I don't think I'll be able to fit all of these in the next release, but I'll see how much I can get done.

Hopefully that sounds like fun. Let me know what you think! Soon, I'll give a pledge-only poll on what features you think are the most important, and what monster girl character you would like to see next (so I can hit the ground running after this feature release).

Hello all! Sorry for the sparse update yesterday. Now that I have more energy, I can describe what this releases about:

A new character has been added: Amy the Ant! In my opinion, she's got a pretty unique personality for an ant. Definitely subverts expectations -- hopefully in a good way, not in the way that movie did it. You know which movie I'm talking about.

But I digress: once you recruit Amy, she sets up the first monster girl-owned shop in town. She's the first of many I plan in the future.

This version also adds a lot of random scenes when you explore. I hope this makes the gameplay more interesting and you find the random scenes to be fun. To be honest, I was going for quantity, because i wanted it to feel like you were reading something new every time you explored. Interesting fact: my girlfriend came up with a huge portion of these ideas. 

I have plans for many elaborate scenes in the future. Some may be requirements for recruiting other monster girls.

Now the map will show you locations that need to be explored.

I added a discord button on the side panel and another button to join our mailing list.

Sadly, my throat isn't healed hundred percent, but I feel good enough to work with a mixture of typing and speaking. I hope to release the latest version in a few days.

I wanted to explain the silhouettes on the banner. Zraxi has already completed a lot of the characters on it, but we thought it would be fun to release them over a period of time instead of all at once. We'll probably have a new character added to the banner every week or so. 

Oh yeah, and I hope you like the new tier icons. I think they're adorable.

Due to health concerns, this release might be a few days late

I've been working really hard on this release.  Too hard, in fact.  A few days ago, I was dictating prose/code every waking hour 3 days in a row, and now, I have a sore throat.  It hurts to talk, and with my finger injury, that means it hurts to work.  I took the last two days easy, and I feel better today, but as a pledge just told me:

Sir are you stupid

Take a day off, tea with honey.  I'm technically your boss due to Patreon

You fucking up your voice helps no one

All excellent points. Realizing they're right, I think I'm going to take the day off, maybe two, maybe three... However many days I need to recover from this sore throat.  

I'm so close to a release, if this sore throat recovers before the month ends, I may not even be late!  But if I am late, I expect it to only be by a few days, not a week.

I'm going to remove a pledge reward (and add new ones later)

hello! I have laryngitis, so I'll keep this short:

I'm going to remove this pledge reward from the $10 tier. This is a pledge reward that nobody has used for many months:  Pick your favorite scene and I will commission artwork for it. 

I am removing this because I want to focus on Monster Girl Farmer, and this tier reward is very time-consuming for me despite not being the artist. It usually takes up to four hours of my time. I hope you understand, and if you have any concerns or more complaints, please let me know.

Amy the Ant's limb situation

Hello all! The poll results are in and I wanted to talk about the limb situation:

"More than two legs" won over "two legs" 10 to 7. I knew when I put it on the poll, I was hoping that two legs would win, but if it didn't, I didn't think it was a big deal.

But now that I'm trying to write her sex scene, the physical challenge of describing her on the receiving end of sexual acts is quite limiting. From a writing perspective, it also complicates her performing mundane activities like laying on a couch, etc. 

I'm going to be honest: with 4 legs, it is possible to write her doing mundane things and be on the receiving end of sexual acts, but there's not a lot of reference material out there. I looked at hundreds of ant girl pictures, but almost every example has two legs. I even looked at spider girl pictures, but that was of limited help, because a lot of the times the action is happening in a web.

Most importantly, after trying to make this work with 4 legs, it just doesn't feel right.  I've come to the conclusion the game will be better off if she has 4 arms and 2 legs. For that reason, I'm going to go with that for this character. The other answers on the poll will still count: she will have sharp fangs and teeth, an insect abdomen, and be named Amy.

In the future, I will look at example images before I give the poll, not after. I hope this will prevent this from happening again.

Hello all! Here are some choices for the ant girl's appearance, and I want you to decide which ones we use!

I looked around a bit for some common ant names, but most of them wouldn't be good names for a character (e.g. harvester, driver, bullet, weaver, carpenter, etc.). I'm thinking of just naming her Amy. Amy the ant. How does that sound?

Full disclosure: Right now I'm considering giving her 4 arms, because I think it would lead to some unique sex scenes. If you really don't like that idea, let me know with a comment below. It'll influence my opinion, but I can't guarantee it will change it. Also, Zraxi wants to give her sharp teeth, but you can decide whether or not she has fangs.

Full disclosure #2: There may be some combination of choices here that I can't think of that wouldn't make physical/artistic sense if put together. I've tried, and can't see any way to do that, but sometimes you people surprise me ;) If that happens, I may have to overrule one of the popular votes, but I'll only do that if I feel like I have to for physical/artistic reasons.

This release adds a character named Hanako, a cherry tree girl. I really suffered writing her scenes. In fact, I wrote her introduction and first two scenes before I came up with a better personality for her and had to throw it all away. But I'm super happy about what I came up with and I'm sure it was the right choice. At least, Hanako was extremely fun to write. I hope she's as entertaining to read! Let me know!

I also added some quality of life features:

• Now scenes are unlocked inside the Spend AP page and can be played over and over again.
• I created a rudimentary "map" that should limit the amount of clicks you need to get somewhere and make it less confusing. I still feel like it's not there yet (my eventual plan is to make the map a clickable image), and I feel like it can be improved from a user experience perspective. Please play around with it and let me know if it makes navigating better and if you can think of anything to improve it.
• You can now purchase items from certain monster girls by spending AP on them. You can't do anything with the items yet, but that is planned, and it should give you a reason to return to monster girls after you've leveled them up all the way.

Also, I've found an artist I'm really happy with and the two of us are gonna partner up together. I've never done this before -- for Academy of Fetishes, I contracted all the artwork -- but her and I are going to be partners! I'm excited that we are going to work together as a team.

Hello all. I wanted to let you know I'm still looking for artists and I decided not to go with that one on the previous poll. I've also implemented a new way of navigating the world that I hope will be an improvement (but I know it isn't a complete solution yet), and now you can purchase items from certain monster girls by spending affection points. You can't do anything with those items yet, but that will happen in the future.

Now it's time to work on the cherry tree girl, but I don't know what her name should be. I figured it's a good opportunity to let you decide for me. Here are some ideas the discord peeps and I have come up with. Please pick your favorite!

If it helps, I think her personality is going to be extremely laid-back. Someone who just goes with the flow and doesn't get upset at much. Of course this personality might change once I get started writing.

This release adds Fern the Dryad, and with her, the first kinky scene! I hope you like tentacles! I made her kind of annoying on purpose, but I hope it's not so annoying that you dislike her as a character. Tell me what you think about her personality.

I'd also like to hear what you think of these new scenes. This past month, I really grew as a writer, but you can't grow without growing pains: I toiled over and over again on all of this new content, but I'm confident that will speed up in the future.

The majority of this month was spent on an extremely complex pagination feature. Unlike Academy of Fetishes, I don't want this game to have many/any walls of text. I've been trying to split passages before they get too long, but when you consider all the possibilities -- with/without Eva, this/that choice made on the previous passage, etc. -- each passage can have varying length. That means it's not as straightforward as "split the page in the middle:" In certain circumstances, that would leave one paragraph per page.

My solution? If text is too long, it's automatically split without me having to think about it. It took a long time to write this code, but It will save time in the long run and prevent a lot of bugs.

I worked on a bunch of other things, but I don't think they're as interesting (note to self: create a change log).

Should the dryad have body hair?

For context, I think of a dryad as a goddess of the forest. I'm thinking of making her a sort of New Age hippie. With that personality, it can be fitting to have body hair. I'm thinking of making it out of moss. if you don't like the idea of her having body hair, I may still put it in the game as a joke but she'll remove it early on. I'm going to let you vote on whether she has permanent body hair or not.

For context, after you get the ant girl and dryad, a scene will unlock where the town members discover that monster girls are living with you. After that scene, monster girls will live in town and set up shops of their own.

Notes:

The ant girl could have an ant-shaped body like below, or I might make her bipedal. If she's chosen, I'll probably give a poll to let you decide which form of her you like. When you level her up, you'll be able to build structures on your farm (like a barn).

All plants girls in this poll will have twigs sticking out of their heads like antlers where the fruit grows from. You will be able to eat/sell their fruit. They will look human (like the first pic) but have antlers (like the second pic)

A dryad is a protector of the forest, specifically the trees. She will unlock your ability to procure wood.

I'm really excited to announce a major change to Monster Girl Farmer! It is now a textbased RPG with a revamped story, characters, and game design. Almost everyone I showed it to has really enjoyed it, so I hope you'll like it too!

Academy Of Fetishes is a textbased, NSFW game, but this is where the similarity between the two will end. AOF has a dark and serious theme. Monster Girl Farmer is a lighthearted comedy. Calling AOF a game is somewhat charitable. It's more like an interactive novel where the main interactivity is, "Do you want to read this scene?" Monster Girl Farmer, on the other hand, already has gameplay in it. There are shops where you can buy items to give to monster girls, random events, followers, etc. The sex scenes in AOF were usually grounded in reality, whereas in Monster Girl Farmer, you'll be having sex with slime girls, giants, and characters that can perform magic.

I want to explain the reasons behind my decision to pivot:

First and foremost, my hands are injured and they have been for at least 8 months. I was sick of waiting around for them to heal so I could continue the visual novel. Over that period of time, I taught myself how to use dictation software really well, but the editor I used to build the visual novel didn't have as many accessibility options as I needed to work a reasonable amount of time each day. The tools I'm using to build this textbased game, on the other hand, are almost 100% dictation based, so I can work for hours.

My dependence on artists became a liability. My main character artist quit right before my injury, and his style was so unique, I couldn't find anyone that could reproduce his style to my liking. When I was working on the visual novel, the artwork always lagged behind my ideas, and it became a bottleneck. This isn't a knock against anyone. It's simply faster to write words than to draw something. By switching to a textbased game, lagging artwork won't delay a release. I hope this doesn't make me sound like an ass. I don't mean it that way! Oh, and don't get me wrong, the game WILL have artwork!

No charge this month

I decided to not charge this month either. This time it's not because of coronavirus, although that's a good reason to do it. It's because my hands are still injured. Technically, it's my forearms that are now injured. I'm not really sure what's going on with me. About 6 months ago, the tips of my fingers hurt I wasn't sure if I was the joints or the tendons. Just when things seem to be going away, my 2 pinkies started to hurt as I was typing. This took about 2 weeks to go away even though I stopped almost all usage of them. In just when this pinky injury started to fade, my forearms started hurting. I thought this would go away in a few days, but my forearms have been hurting for at least 5 days now. My forearms burn from doing simple things like washing the dishes or holding my cell phone. If it's anything like my pinkies, it should go away in a week or 2.

I long for the days when I could make a release every 2 weeks, having added 15 K words to Academy of Fetishes, although that was probably responsible for my health problems now. It's a mystery to me why my injuries seem to be migrating, but I can only hope was my forearms have healed, I'll be able to be productive again. I'd really like to work on Monster Girl Farmer right now, and I appreciate your patience.

As a result, I'm now looking for a new character artist, one that specializes in Monster Girl art.
