Development Preview: High-Resolution Rendering

Just a quick preview of a future development: High-Resolution rendering is coming to Cxbx-Reloaded:

No nasty hacks, no external software such as dgvoodoo, no broken HUD, but finally, a real, non-game specific solution.

All going well, this will work with every game that can run in Cxbx-Reloaded. It needs a little more testing, but it should be landing in the main builds this month!

Progress Report (June 2019)

This month there have been a few, significant improvements made to Cxbx-Reloaded.
The most notable of which are detailed below.

Vertex Buffer Cache

 [PR 1639: https://github.com/Cxbx-Reloaded/Cxbx-Reloaded/pull/1639

This increases performance dramatically in some titles, and all-around reduces stutter. So far, this has been found to be most notable in the Dashboa...

Progress Update (May 2019)

Despite the lack of Patreon updates, Cxbx-Reloaded's development has been in full swing with plenty of notable Improvements:

1. Cxbx-R now builds with CMake. This provides no immediate benefit but it opens the door to compiling with other toolchains, work will be taken to get Cxbx-R compiling with MinGW, after which we can work on a potential Linux build using Winelib. Although not a fully native build, it's still a step in the right direction. (No promises right now, as it may not be v...

System Link/LAN capability has now made it into Cxbx-Reloaded!

This is especially awesome because it allows for System Link capable games to be played between users of Cxbx-R, XQEMU and Real Hardware, all in the same session!

Notes:

  • Cross-Play with Real Hardware & XQEMU requires keys dumped from a real xbox. A python script for dumping keys with xboxpy is provided by JayFoxRox Here
  • TCP/IP based netw...

Chihiro Progress: Ollie King boots

The last week or so of effort concentrating on Sega Chihiro support in Cxbx-Reloaded is starting to pay off.

Ollie King, a Sega Chihiro exclusive, is now booting in Cxbx-Reloaded.

Input doesn't work yet, as our arcade emulation is in the very early stages, lots of missing pieces, but it's starting to come together.

Note: This is an experimental branch that has not been merged into the main Cxbx-Reloaded codebase just yet, but it will be *very* soon.

Chihiro Progress

Sorry for the lack of updates over here on Patreon, despite the radio silence, we have been rather busy with development over the last few months.

The good news is Sega Chihiro arcade emulation is starting to come together!

More updates on general emulation and compatibility to follow in a progress report that will drop sometime next week.

As always, you can follow progress/get help/chat with the developers on the Cxbx-Reloaded discord: 2019-01-31 09:14:55 +0000 UTC View Post

Cxbx-Reloaded v0.1

The first 'stable' release of Cxbx-Reloaded just launched: https://github.com/Cxbx-Reloaded/Cxbx-Reloaded/releases/tag/v0.1

More details about this and future plans to follow, but first I'm taking a 1 week holiday to relax and recover after working hard for the last few months.

Enjoy!

Next Steps (v0.1) & The Future

Cxbx-Reloaded is currently in the state of 'Feature Freeze' this means that development has temporarily halted on new features, and we're concentrating solely on bug-fixes, performance tweaks, and similar, simple tasks.

This is in preparation for our first official stable release (v0.1), which will launch along side a new Website (and compatibility list/database) around the end of June/early July.

After this, the feature freeze will be lifted and we'll be full swing in development ...

Progress Report: Jan - Apr 10th 2018

Firstly, I should apologize for the late progress report, I intended to get a report published before the end of March, but I was busy with work, thank you all for being so patient.

Now that's out the way, Cxbx-Reloaded has made excellent progress these last few months, with a total of 619 commits by 14 contributors, consisting of the usual slew of minor tweaks and fixes, but also many significant changes:

This Year in Cxbx-Reloaded

2017 has been a busy year for Cxbx-Reloaded. Since January 2017, we've had a total of 1980 commits, contributed by a total of 11 developers.

1980 commits may not sound like a great deal when compared to other projects, but the total number of commits since 2003 is only 3,216. A little more than 60% of all contributions have been within this year, and we have no plans to slow down!

So what happened in all these contributions?

1. We gained support for more audio codecs, allowing soun...

Progress Reports

Hi all,

First I would like to make an apology for the lack of posts recently. I've been neglecting the community side of things and believe me when I say it's not intentional, there's just hasn't been much to talk about.

We are still very active, there just hasn't been much in the way of deliverable changes, and I prefer to talk about completed work, rather than work-in-progress changes/experiments.

As for what work has been taking place:

I've been working on imp...

Game Purchases so far

It's been a while since I made a post listing which games I have purchased for testing, so rather than list just the new ones, I'll list all titles I have so far.

Note that I haven't gotten around to dumping and testing all of them yet, but it will/is happening, it's a pretty time consuming task.

Also worth mentioning: I finally have a Kreon drive. This means that I can make full dumps for preservation/archival purposes,as well as just for emulation, which is very important conside...

Progress Report: August 2017

This month has been a rather busy one for Cxbx-Reloaded, we even gained some new core contributors to the project.

We are pleased to welcome Radwolfie as a core member of the Cxbx-Reloaded team. For those who are not aware, this individual was the person responsible for the recent improvements to audio emulation.

We have also formed a new Issue Management Team, this currently consists of Patrick, Myself, Voxel, CakeLancelot and BenNottelling. This team is responsible for monitoring...

Progress Report: July 2017

It's a short one this time:

This month the team and I have been hard at work on various aspects of Cxbx-Reloaded, the most notable improvements being RadWolfie's work on Audio HLE and some timing improvements in thread handling.

The end result is that many titles that lacked audio or had missing sound effects now play them! This can be seen in the dashboard (which now has full audio) and JSRF (which now plays sound effects, and as a result of timing fixes, no longer suffers from a...

Progress Report: June 2017

This month I've been improving support of the XOnline libraries.  While we are a long way from working network capability, and it may seem too soon to begin working on such a thing, many later titles use these libraries extensively and crash due to unimplemented functionality, making it quite important to fix.

Due to improved handling of XOnline, the Xbox Live dashboard now boots, additionally, Conflict: Desert Storm II now reaches Menus, before this change, it crashed on a black scr...

Goal Reached: $400

As promised, starting from 05th July, I will work a minimum of 16-hours a week on Cxbx-Reloaded. (Most week this has already been the case, but now I will make sure to achieve this every single week).

In order to prove this, I will be using time-tracking software  while working on the project, in order to accurately track what time has been spent, and on what areas of Cxbx-Reloaded, I'll be making this information public so that Patrons can be assured that the project is active.

Game Purchases for June 2017

I acquired 7 new games to test with Cxbx-Reloaded this month:

June  2017:

  • Blinx: The Time Sweeper
  • Micro Machines
  • Nightmare Before Christmas
  • Oddworld: Munch's Odyssey
  • Prince of Persia: The Warrior Within
  • Shadow the Hedgehog
  • Sonic Heroes

Note that from now on, I'll be making monthly posts detailing what games were purchased, I apologise for not doing so before now.

A little Update

I apologise for the lack of news here: I've spent the best part of 3 weeks trying to solve a regression caused by better input emulation.

Fixing the implementation of XGetDeviceChanges to return correct values fixed an issue where many titles were unable to detect input, however, for some unknown reason, this also causes Jet Set Radio Future to hard crash in early boot.

As much as I hate to do so, after wasting three weeks on this issue, which could have been used to improve other aspe...

Goal Reached: Debug Kit

A debug kit has been purchased and providing all goes well, it should arrive by Saturday!

This opens up the exciting possibility of real-time debugging Xbox titles on real hardware, this will allow stepping through execution on both the Xbox and Cxbx-Reloaded and should make it much easier to verify the accuracy of our emulated kernel and intercepted functions.

Expect many bug fixes and improvements in the near future

Rendering Issues (Update)

It's too soon/I'm not ready to write a full progress report entry, but the source of the majority of the vertex rendering issues has been identified and fixed!

Progress Report : April 2017

This month we have been hard at work trying to find the source of the vertex bug that is currently plaguing the Dashboard, the GamePad XDK sample and many other titles. Sadly, we have made little progress on this front, but did identify a few small issues that were contributing factors.

PatrickvL determined that there must be a bug in vertex conversion so he started work porting the known-to-be-working vertex conversion code from Dxbx, sadly this did not fix the vertex issue completely, b...
