Painting of Bron - Step by step

Here's the process my my painting that I posted last month! I hope it's legible and helpful in some way. I'm by no means an expert, but this gives a rundown of the process I've found that works best for me. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you!

ps. it's a big file and best viewed at 100%, so click on the image to get it to pop up then open it in a new tab.

Undress me (CW medical imagery/gore)

finished! I had fun with this. I definitely want to continue working with spot blacks and a limited palette, I'll have to see how I can continue to push myself in that direction.

character sketches 040219

Above: Miloš and his daughter, who live in the habitation on BODE-1c, AKA Big Red, the planet orbited by the ISS Astrolabe. Big Red is hot, dry, and inhospitable, but because of its life-sustaining atmosphere it holds the largest growing population outside of Earth. Its main export is iron as well as a variety of rare-earth elements that are plentiful in its massive crust. Despite being lucrative for the ISA, they find it hard to keep up with the demands of the burgeoning population and civi...

Painting practice

I wanted to see whether doing studies has paid off, and (surprise), they have. I feel like I've finally found a digital painting style that works for me, and the key all along was to treat it like traditional painting. limiting layers, brushes, and colours. more below:

Also: i'm sending out the monthly email for $10 sketch request patrons. keep an eye on your inbox!

ISA Standard Uniforms (& notes)

A little clothing ref I made for myself I found tucked away in last year's files.

ISA (International Space Administration) service dress includes a double-breasted jacket with buttons hidden on the inner layer, that tucks under the belt; sturdy cotton slacks; and standard issue rubber-soled boots with velcro fastening. (I made the boots too complicated to draw efficiently so I normally just colour them as flat black...) Under their service dress members wear a light blue dress shi...

I had a lot of fun with the inks on this one so it was a challenge to try and colour it in a way that complimented the linework, and now i think i've developed workflow that sticks!

The bad guys

Design work for Hagen, a fanatically violent and self-righteous bounty hunter in charge of a private militia named RAGNAROK; and Wolfgang, a smuggler and ace pilot.

I'd been meaning to design Wolfgang's spacesuit for a while, and decided to give him a more utilitarian look to contrast with the protagonists' more streamlined suits.

Snowboard

A conversation reminded me that I've been meaning to draw snowboarding gear for ages now, and why not also pay homage to some of the amazing(ly ugly) fashion that emerged from the culture in the 80s/90s

Illustration WIP & Update

Hey folks! Between working on November's sketch requests i've started (another) illustration, which i'll be finishing up next year.

Apologies for things slowing down here, since life on my end has been picking up. As December is a busy (and costly) month for everyone, I'm going to put my page on pause so you won't be charged for this month.

I'm facing a lot of uncertainty about the start of 2019, as I am going back into another year of fulltime study starting in February. Because o...

Brons

Bronwyn Lloyd, one of the main supporting characters for my comic! As you may guess she was born and raised in southern Wales. Bron is a talented engineering graduate with a major in robotics, and she joined the ISA science division shortly after graduating and was shipped off to deep space to help work on the planetary survey team aboard the ISS Astrolabe. As a Junior Electrical Technician she works in both hardware and software, but more often than not she unwillingly plays the role of IT supp...
