Weekly news 2018-07-16:"Inking" of episode 26 is done! (screenshots)

Hi Patrons! Last week, I made good progress into the production of episode 26. All pages reached a black&white milestone: pure black&white character over simplified gray-scale background.

After around 50h of practice, I started to get used to the "painted line-art" rendering and brush preset. I feel less pressure to "paint my line-art", but at the end, it looks really like a normal black...

Weekly news 2018-07-09: Video Timelapse, Renderfarm optimisation and inking

Hi Patrons!

Last week started with optimizations for the renderfarm: changing the code was a necessity (44 languages now, 34GB of files online) and I'll move soon (end of August) to a new place with a slower Internet. I'll skip the technical details of what I did to just tell the result: the whole process is faster (x2 and a bit more) and more secure now. (You can read the commit history here i...

Weekly news 2018-07-03: Page 1 full test (Krita files and full preview)

Hi Patrons, last week I focused on finishing page one of episode 26. I often do that; experiment new strategy on the page one (a full loop of the workflow). Pause and learn, then apply the big steps to the other pages.

Under is the three key step of the method I'm using: (1) storyboard. (2) Then a black and white pass where I experimented around my "painted contrasted black&white line-art" for characters (on a layer) and the backgrounds painted with simple greyscale. (3) Recoloring a...

Weekly news 2018-06-26: workflow optimisation

Hi Patrons! Since last week, I'm doing a lot of digital painting test: I tested Krita 4.1 of course; but I also tested Kubuntu 18.04 and worked on integrating in my workflow new tools and features that appeared since the Krita Sprint in May and mix that with what I learned from all the test of episode 25.

The experimental panel of ep25:

On previous episode 25, I used a new method for a single panel and it was really effective and also fun to paint this way: this method f...

Weekly 2018-06-18: Success, Graph, Bday and a surprise.

Hi Patrons! Today is my birthday and I'm really happy it sync with a weekly report.

The surprise

Last week, while future episode 26 storyboard was still in a proof-reading process, I decided to jump on a big item on my Todo list, one that was around for a long time and a surprise for the Pepper&Carrot reader: an official e-shop

Weekly 2018-06-12: Storyboard of future ep26

Hi Patrons! I focused last week on the creation of the final storyboard for episode 26.

I decided to draw it on large sheet of paper; A3 (29,7cmx42cm landscape, 11,69inx16,54in) using a new process: I just drew every ideas of panel I had in mind, every sequences, even half pages; or two or three pages with adding a big padding around every thumbnails. I then completed the puzzles and obtained in total...

Weekly 2018-05-22: Brainstorming sketches for episode 26, 10 pages inside my sketchbook

Hi Patrons! Many thanks for all the comments after the release last week of episode 25; I discover them just today. After publishing episode 25, I immediately packed my bag and joined the Krita Sprint 2018 in Deventer (Netherlands). I came back yesterday. You can read the blog post published on the Krita website for more details and photos about it.

I also started this week-end to brainstorm a lot of id...

Episode 25 : There Are No Shortcuts

Hi Patrons! The new Pepper&Carrot Episode 25 : There Are No Shortcuts is now published online!

Every five episodes of Pepper&Carrot, I release a muted episode without texts: It's a tough artistic constrain. As if it wasn't constraining enough, it was necessary for me at this point in the story to rebuild the house of Pepper (destroyed in the previous episode),  remotivate Pepper to finish her studies and finally showcase the power of the old witches Thym, Cayenne and Cumin (...

Weekly 2018-05-15: step by step of a panel, and last steps to ep25

Hi Patrons! This is a late weekly because episode 25 is around the corner and I'm spending all my time on polishing every panels of the nine pages. On Friday, I'll fly to Krita Sprint 2018 in Netherland and I really want to release episode 25 before this event.

A step by step:

I kept screenshot and photos while making a panel, the workflow for this one isn't representative of what I used to do all the episode, but I thought it was interesting to share the making-of of th...

Weekly news 2018-04-29: first renders of ep25

Hey patrons! As you can see on the screenshot above, I started this week detailing on episode 25. I also finished all the drawings of the episode ( in black & white, with a digital pencil brush preset ) so now I have a lot of coloring to do. I'll still need at least ten days of full-time coloring now ; so I know already exactly what I'll do next week.

On other news; I painted on Wednesday this art...

Weekly 2018-04-16

Hi Patrons! Last week was short but productive.

Episode 25

I'm applying slowly but surely my new digital painting workflow to the comic pages. It's a long episode ( long for the Pepper&Carrot format, 10 pages ) and it respects the tradition of being totally muted and without speechbubble. (similar tradition on ep05, 10, 15 and 20). So, right now I'm working on all the pages to reach a "colored sketch" status. An extra pass of painting will correct everything later. I...

Weekly 2018-04-02

Hey Patrons! A period of easter holidays started for me here; so I traveled to Poland for visiting the family of my wife. As I was traveling on Sunday, I'm writing only now the weekly Sunday blog entry.

The main task on my radar last week was to end my rendering researches. I'll try to explain it even if it's not easy. The artwork I posted "The rendezvous" (on top) was the conclusion of this research period and also a mini laboratory full of experimentations. The landsca...

Hey patrons!

Krita 4.0 release

Hey Patrons! I don't have a lot of visuals to post this week as I focused a big part on closing items on my to-do list.

The to-do list items in question were mostly non-artistic todos (backup, rearranging my workspace, administrative papers and repairing things at home). Among the list, this might interest you: I'm trying to improve the level of privacy on Pepper&Carrot (propose a future postal address for direct donation or letters, propose also donations via IBAN). Hi Patrons! I spent the first part of the week around the Krita project (I still had to work on the default presets/tags/bundles/palettes) and then in the last part of the week I took time to experiment and beta-test how the new features of Krita 4.0 can help me to produce my artworks (Krita 4.0 will be released this month).

First, I made a presentation of all the new default brush for Krita 4.0 in my weekly wednesday live-streaming. Brush after brush, explaining how to use them. You can...

Weekly 2018-03-04

Hi patrons! My week was going to be a week of production on episode 25, but that was until it took a special turn last Sunday afternoon: the long thread about refactoring the default preset in future Krita 4.0 started to be confusing and very hard to get a consensus to move on to the next step. The refactor of the brushkit was done (see the "Before" picture under) with plenty of new and cool presets; but the brushkit wasn't balanced for all the target usage of Krita, brush icons were repetitive ...

Hi! I spent the first part of the week to travel back to France after Japan-Impact. Then, I drew more (digital inking) on episode 25 as you can see on the montage picture I added on the top of this post.

On wednesday, two panels were inked while being video-live-streamed on Youtube . It was an experimental test to see if my three monitors (just a dual 1080p, plus the monitor of the Cintiq13HD) and...
