Cicadas for Teftuft

Cicada reading a periodical for the periodical cicadas of 2021!  I made the first one more realistic(ISH) and wanted to try something a little more illustrative so I did the bottom one.. And I don't know.  I feel like I should study design. It does NOT come to me naturally.

Alright so. I'm playing around with varying the color in shadows and 'grey' areas. It's more visually interesting. I'm not great at doing it, but I think I'm learning.

I also played around with lost and found edges rather than just inking the whole figure in black or a dark line. Again, I need to think about it more and consider how to use it effectively. Which is something I'm not great with!

There are SO many elements to artwork that can be used well or poorly. 

The Forever Commission and a Patron Gift

It's really lovely and spring out so I've been going outside a lot and being a living animal rather than an undead artist, which feels AMAZING.  So art is a bit slow. But I have finished a really large, long-term commission and I'm noodling out some gifts for Patrons. This one is for Teftuft

Speedpaint just for fun.  I had a rough time mimicking the mostly-frontal lighting of a flashlight but it came out alright. I learned something, and that was good. There are still rough areas but it was just practice so I'm going to leave them alone.

Blood and Roots WIP

I've been working on this for a while now, off and on between commissions. I'm trying very hard to work everything I've learned lately about composing images and man, my brain is on fire. It's not that I've never studied composition before, but I didn't REALLY get into it (and should have) so I'm catching up all late... It's rough. 

So I'll be picking at this for a while longer, fighting to make it better; the best image it can be. 

Painting Experiment #2

I had been playing around with thick outlines and a kind of comic-style but it was kind of boring... And then I threw on some brighter orange and it started to get more interesting.

It's not really finished, considered artwork, but I started to enjoy working on it, which is something.

Playing around with cross-change (when the figure and the negative space kind of 'swap' darks and lights) and with hard lines vs. soft passages. I don't know if I'm good at it? But it's interesting to play with something interesting.

Figure Drawing (yet again)

Just, the kind of thing an artist should be doing all the time. I am NOT great at it. There's something about all the muscle and bone and stuff around the collar-neck-head area that I just DO NOT get. All that brachiation machinery, PSHEW!!!!!

So I'm on Strattera!

I followed the labyrinthine path of mental health and wound up talking to a psychiatrist. I lucked out and the medicaid facility I fell into has a lot of genuine, helpful, interested doctors.  Was officially-ish diagnosed with C-PTSD, which I already knew I had. It's nice to be able to say: OK but the DSM backs me up so.

He agreed that I had a lot of symptoms of ADHD, though whether they're from the PTSD or the condition was opened by trauma or whether it's a comorbidity is up for...

Just fiddling around with my new paint, which I LOVE, holy shit. The coverage of this stuff is just out-of-this-world amazing. It's the closest thing to digital painting in real media but with just enough transparency to still be interesting.

Today was a study day

I had a great deal of trouble sleeping because I had a psych telehealth call this morning (which ended up being fine) so today was a low-key reading and study day. I've cracked all of these books, if not read them from cover to cover, but a refresher is always good.

I had planned to spend all day hanging out in my nest, but man, the sun is strong already! And I'm used to cooler temps. Got too roasted and was driven inside. 

Composition and planning on commission

So, I've been learning as much as I can about composition lately, because it's an area in which I do not excel. I've been watching videos on various websites, especially New Masters Academy, reading books, etc. and am slowly filling in my blind spots.

I'm not great at it, by any means, but I've picked up some things and am applying them.

My first SoFlat Matte Acrylic Painting and a Review

Alright! I finally got the chance to use the SoFlat and it's amazing!  The perfect paint for me in a LOT of ways. The only drawback is no smooshing around, which you get with the gouache and oils.

So I use Acrylic a lot, and it's very much like regular acrylic in its pigment and behavior, except that it dries very flat and very matte, both of which are amazing for showing and scanning (the glare off of regular acrylic, especially Golden Fluid) makes scanning a bitch.

Depressingly, if this were gouache it’d be far far less.

my new SoFlat came!!! Golden is the primo brand so I know it’ll be good. I don’t know yet if it’ll fit my painting temperament though.

Hey my peeps! Sorry for being rather silent. I'm working on a lot of commissions right now and also getting the new rabbit settled in.
