Towne Square Doors

The Town set should now be fully usable.  This month we have Towne Square Doors.  Like the prior towne releases, we've got the same sets of variations of stone and stucco.  This also adds a new textured wood square door that can be used with any of the other square doors (dungeon stone, cut stone, ruined stone, etc).

There is one more piece to finish off the basic Towne set, which are the separate primary walls and primary floors (Openlock).  We'll get that out in A...

More of the Cut-Stone update is live on Thingiverse

Cut-Stone corners are now configurable. With this, you can make a corner tile that has a single window, a window on both sides, a door, a door on both sides, or a door on one and a window on the other.

Cut-Stone wall on tile sets updated

It's been a huge set of updates, but Cut-Stone wall on tile sets are now all converted to all the latest standards, over 550 stl files.  This was the top voted set for march, and it's been work I've really wanted to get done.

On top of that, I've added in a bunch of models that didn't exist before, including:

  • 2x4/4x2 diagonals
  • Corner segments for arched and square doors, and arched and square windows
  • Low tiles for curved, pillars and diagonals

Towne Corners

Next Step in a basic towne set: Corners.  We've done these corners differently than we normally do.  They are made up of two walls, and a pillar.  We did this because when trying to create buildings, you will want more flexibility of being able to customize the corners.  This is setting up for being able to have corners with doors, windows, and even a door and a window.

Towne Walls

Ok, the walls are up!  I've rethought a lot about these, and part of where I went was in the combination of stucco and stone.  For the 2x2 walls, there are 8 variations (so far), including 2 broken stucco walls like the one pictured, as well as 2 low walls.  Getting this set out was a bit of a struggle.  For some reason that I still have yet to debug both of my printers are now having layer alignment issues, which unfortunately messes with wood texture a lot.  I manag...

OpenLock Towne Wood Floors

There I go, pulling the trigger too fast.  Whoops.  Here's the OpenLOCK Primary Floors, including the single piece prints.

Towne Wooden Floors

First release is here for the new Towne Series.  Based on the feedback, I did a few more changes to the floors (they are thinner now), and printed and painted a bunch of them, and I think they are ready for release.  The grain on these is much cleaner than the old floors, and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.

When I start a new set, I try to bang out floors, walls, corners and doors in pretty rapid succession so that they are usable quickly.  Walls should come ou...

OpenForge Places of Power: Carved Rock Pillar

Today Evan is introducing a new series for OpenForge called "Places of Power"! These will be large multi-purpose set pieces, designed and themed to various environments to plug-n-play in any RPG campaign, but also double as great throw-down items for wargaming.

This is the first release in this series, and we delve deep into the jungle! This release is a rocky platform/rise containing an ancient, stone pillar covered with mysterious carved glphys and runes.

Dungeon Stone Pillars (Internal Corners)

This was one of the top vote getters in the feb vote.  I've been working on the pieces that will be needed for the tudor reboot, and wanted to get something else out, so since this had the second largest number of votes, it seemed a good release.  What this is, is a way to make internal corners not have the weird wall gap.  However, you can also use them as pillars in the middle of rooms.

Print comparison

Should be last post on this today.  Just finished printing one, and I happened to have a primed but unpainted copy of the old tudor floors for reasons.  This photo does a good job of illustrating what I think the advantages are on the new approach.

As a side note, I also discovered to my chagrin that the new floor is a fair bit taller than the old one.  Easy to fix, but that's what beta is for.

Feedback on this is welcome, please if you see something that you thin...

Test print of wood floor

Here's an stl of the beta wood texture.  I should have been more specific about what I was optimizing for, because I do still like the old wood texture as a model.  The problem is that it prints terribly.  With that detail on the X & Y, much of it is actually smaller than 0.4mm, so it gets skipped.  So what you get is a wood floor that's super rough, hard to paint and tears up your brushes.

The new design as it stands is designed to eliminate most of those proble...

Tudor rebuild progress

So I've started on the tudor rebuild process.  First order of business was to create a new process for making wood planks.  This is my first cut.  Left is a square from the existing tudor tiles.  Right is my first cut at a new wood style.

What do you all think?

Jack the Giant Slayer

One of the things I love doing is giving more exposure to other fantastic modelers in the Thingiverse community.  If you have not seen the awesome miniatures published by Valandar you need to.  He's been banging out miniatures that he's releasing free at an incredible rate.

Well, he's also got a ...

Dungeon Stone Stairs

This is the first tile created using our new patron voting process.  This month they voted for Dungeon Stone as a set, and Stairs as the tile.  I've done stairs before, but I felt the prior designs lacked in ability to be usable for game play.  If people want me to, I can still look at making that kind of scatter terrain stairs, but these I think really fit what one would want for a dungeon.  The stairs have a new cap-stone, as the rounded floor squares of dungeon stone ju...

Cavern Entrance

Evan has something a little different for us today! This is a set-piece for a cavern entrance, featuring the exterior with some large dilapidated pillars, a rune drawn placard and cave etching on the entrance, and rocky inside of the cave wall. This piece was designed with the intent of addition some additional mediums to it. The ground is purposely untextured (flat) so you can flock, glue sand/gravel, or whatever you might wish (or just paint).

You can see from the example pic, he pain...

OpenForge Encounters: Spirit Shrine

It's been a long time, and I really needed to finally close out the elemental shrines. Since I was using the wiccan model of 4 earthly elements spirit, this, the last shrine is the spirit shrine.

Realizing that the pentacle was a star surrounded by a circle, it seemed natural to make this room round and embed a really large pentacle in the floor. That being said, people have gotten used to the wall symbols and single floor symbols from the prior shrines, so I tossed those in as well. I'...

Magnet deal

Many of us need lots of 5mm sphere magnets.  I know I burn through enough that some day there will be a neodymium mine in china that has a plaque dedicated in my honor (probably not).  I just ran into a deal that's 1000 for $28.  Shipping is in the $16 range, so when I bought 2000, that came out to $76, or a unit price of 3.7 cents per, which is the lowest I've run into.

I've never used this store before, and since I just made the order I have no idea if this will work o...

January voting closed and some questions

Voting for January is over.  I'll start the vote for Feb the week before the start of Feb so that I know the result before the month starts instead of half way through it.  It was a tight race for which set, but Dungeon stone came out on top.  Inside dungeon stone, the most votes were for stairs, so I'll get to work on that possibly as soon as this weekend.  I've added a sheet to the OpenForge tiles spreadsheet (last one) for tracking the votes from month to month.

Dark Elf Sentry Tower

This is a Dark Elf Sentry Tower! The tower is modular and can be stacked to any height. It's a smaller tower (2x2" pieces) designed to hold a single mini on each floor or top. There are 3 floor varieties: First floor w/ door, upper floor with lantern globes, and upper floor with windows. There's 3 topper options as well: 2 variant open tops (one with spider motif), and one closed crystal toper (intended to be almost like an "Underdark lighthouse"!. There's an optional rocky base also. Pieces ...

Alcoves

This set adds alcoves. I've needed these tiles many times in my own games, so this release is born of my own GMing frustration. They let you add flair to a hallway or other rooms that can still be out of the way of gameplay.

This set adds alcoves, along with alcoves with windows and doors. The alcove door makes for a pretty nice exit from a building.  Finally, you can bodge together a fairly decent tower out of these for outdoor scenarios (Though I probably need to make some kind ...

Volcanic Caverns Go Angular

This is first and foremost an experiment.  For at least a year, I've been noodling on why I'm not a huge fan of the approach that has been taken generally towards caverns, and a big piece to me was that caverns needed to be able to go off in any direction. Well, that idea has been banging around in my mind for a long time, and now I finally decided to try approaching it in a different manor. With this set, I've added triangular floors. Specifically 60 degree equilateral triangles. Each s...

Niche release

I couldn't help it, the pun had to happen.  Lots of castles and dungeons features niches where you can find all manor of things.  Small shrines, scrolls, swords, clues for a puzzle, statues?  The possibilities are unlimited.  Unlike a normal release where I'm doing a ton of file sizes, this one is only 2x2, but to make up for it, it comes in curved and diagonal along with normal walls.  If y'all like getting more of these, dare I say, niche releases of more specialized t...

Forgot to mention

Many people also gave feedback that the pillars were too perfectly uniform in size and shape.  I figured out a way to change that as well.  It's not visible in all the pictures, but this one shows it off pretty well  - the basalt pillars are now also not uniform in shape and size.

Volcanic Cavern Corners

After the release of the Volcanic Cavern floors and walls were released, I got a ton of useful feedback on them, and as most of you know, I polled you all to determine what direction the set should go in.  Well, the poll came up exactly tied between medium and large pillars, so I decided to go with the large because that's the closest to real life basalt pillars.  If anyone has their heart set on the medium pillars, let me know in the comments.

Since then, I have revised both th...

Dungeon Stone Curved Doors

We're inching closer to completion of the base set of Dungeon Stone.  This release, we have arched doors for curved tiles.  We also tossed in some curved floors so that you can do holes like the center of the picture.  A surprisingly large number of dungeons have that kind of feature, and without railings no less.  Someone should really call OSHA.

We expect one more release of dungeon stone curved before we move on.  That will be to give you options for walls perp...

Curved Dungeon Stone Windows & More

Today we have curved Dungeon Stone windows.  We have the full gamut, from 2x2 all the way out to the huge 8x8 pieces.  On top of that, we've extended the entire curved line by adding in curved concave floors, which let you do two different things.  One, you can make your curved walls be on square bases so that you have floor on either side.  Two you can have instead have curved walls that from inside the room are concave.  We also found there was a defect in the large cu...

Volcanic Wall Poll

Post releasing the first two pieces of the volcanic cavern set, I got a lot of feedback from people who have actually seen basalt pillars in person, and the single largest piece of feedback is that the pillars in scale are too small.  I would judge that in scale, the pillars are about 9 inches across, but the real pillars are generally 1-2 feet across, and can even be larger.

So, I've designed two test files.  One in scale makes the pillars about a foot across, the second is abo...
