Volcanic Cavern Walls (Part 1)

I've been busy for weeks working on caverns.  For some time I've been fighting the floor textures, because I want something awesome, but also still makes it clear where all the spaces are.  I'm also trying to build up a library of limestone features that I can add into caverns as various pieces get created.  Well, while doing this, I ran across a fascinating type of cavern.  Almost all natural caverns are limestone, but it turns out, that there are some that are made from bas...

All About That Base

Today I've released some major base updates, only some of which are public currently, so as patrons, you get early access.  First off, there's some updates that apply to all or most bases:

  • Added supports to OpenLOCK bays.  The original supports that Printable Scenery published, I was never happy with, they were as prone to causing a print to fail as they were to help, but after many revisions, I think they supports they have today are quite good.  I've used them before on ...

Experimenting with caverns

Spent some time this morning modeling some dry caverns (meaning no features created by water).

This is a 1x1 and a 2x1 next to each other, without base or anything.

This is my first time really trying forms this organic, so any feedback as I build out the basics of the cavern set are totally welcome.

Le me know what you think!

Dragon Tribe - Throne and Altar

Our friend Danny (aka 3D Printed Tabletop on YouTube) is currently running an awesome "Lost Dragons" Kickstarter. He has made tons of efforts to support and further the community, and many free models will be and have been released as part of the Kickstarter's success.

Since we at OpenForge love the community as well, we thought we would make some dragon-themed scatter to complement his campaign, a...

Dungeon Stone Low Walls

There's a bunch of updates today.  First off, I published the low wall tiles that we discovered a lot of people want from the poll.  We published all the wall types we have all at once.  Walls, Corners, Diagonals & Curves in every size that we support for full height walls.

Grab em on Thingiverse.  We have also added them to the original wall/corner/diagonal/curved things.

Barrels!

But not just any barrels, barrels that let you build a large number of possible barrels. We have open lids, closed lids, bung holes, bung corks, water, fire, rocks, or you fill them with bits from your minis collection.  The water insert can even be used as a base for remixing your own interiors for the barrels.

Secret Doors!

Roll a perception check. You find a secret door!

This set offers walls that can spin. Next to a floor tile, it's pretty darn hard to tell that this wall turns. Can be a great way to spring a surprise on your players!

This release has a full raft of options.  First off we have OpenLOCK A walls, in both full height and half height format.  For OpenForge 2, we have a number of firsts.  This set is the first to start the transition from 25mm basis to inch basis (based on the ...

Poll Results

Ok, results are in, and we want to share with you some things we plan on doing going forward for the next few quarters.  First off, I want to thank everyone for letting us know what you think, and for all suggestions, and for the wonderful supportive comments!

There's a lot to go through here, so I'll give an executive summary for those who just want to know the decisions before I dive into the details.  Just remember, nothing here is set in stone, if future polls shift opinions, we ...

Dwarven Baths

This week, Evan continues on the Dwarven scatter terrain with Dwarven Baths!

Nobody knows as much about moving steam and hot water through the mountains as Dwarves, and they leverage this knowledge to build steam baths deep within their mountain homes. The steam bath is always at the perfect temperature to sooth aching muscles after a long day of working the forge bellows, or mining precious metals. Gas is piped in as well to keep twin torches alight and fresh, warm water is constantly be...

OpenForge project poll

It's been some time since we have done a poll across the OpenForge patrons.  We've been depending on the backer site for guidance, but a number of larger questions of direction have been popping into our minds.  The intention had been to post this last month, but a variety of problems (computers failing and printers breaking) meant we were scrambling just to get the releases out on time.  With a little more breathing room this month, we managed to get the poll written.

Dungeon Stone Curved

We are closing in on completing the Dungeon Stone set.  Today we have Dungeon Stone curved set.

First off, we've added in 4x4 that removes the 2x2 from the middle of the circle section, so you can place any tile you want in the middle.

Second, and what we are most excited about: 12 inch and 16 inch diameter circular rooms. So far as we are aware, the largest diameter circular rooms offered by any tile system.

Finally, we have stopped releasing many of the least useful curves ...

Narrow Bridge Intersections/Joints

This set updates the OpenForge Narrow Bridge by the full selection of intersections (straight, corner, tee, cross) as well as their bases.

The design idea is that this kind of bridge is something you would find in a place like the Mines of Moria. These pieces let these bridges turn and intersect with other bridges.

I've been wanting to do this ever since the first I released the first narrow bridge.  Doing the ramps last month got me back into doing bridges, so it was finally time ...

Pavillion

Whether you are in the middle of a colorful bazaar, a fortified encampment, a knights tourney, or the center of a caravan, you can always find some kind of large tent / pavilion. This model was designed to give you a playable yet great-looking option that can be multi-purpose, reusable, and enhance your table!

Evan does this week's OpenForge release: a large pavilion tent, with an entrance and removable top. It prints in two pieces with no supports needed. One piece is the open bottom and the ...

Sloping ramps for the bridge

One of the most requested features for the Bridge has finally landed.  Sloping ramps (instead of staircases).  While not as friendly to miniatures at the edges, these are critical for people who want to use them for vehicles.  They also honestly look better this way, and for most bridges are more realistic.

This release adds support to all prior bridge sets for sloping ramps, so it has files to do this for the basic bridge, the wide bridge, the narrow bridge and the no wall...

Dwarven Doors

Dwarven halls need imposing doors. We've taken the dwarven set, and added an imposing doorway adapting a beautiful door from Evan.

With this, the dwarven set should be ready for play.  There is more we can (and will) add to the set, but it was critical to get the main pieces out to make the set usable.

Laser Cut Paint Racks

I've posted about this before, but I decided today to just release it for free.  I've posted the designs and source code for making my lasercut Reaper/Vallejo/Warcolour/Army Painter paint racks:

I love these racks, and I figure other people might love having them too.  This is the second version of this design, and it just overall works a lot better.

The designs include 3x10, 4x10, 5x10 and 6x10 r...

OpenForge Encounters: Beelzbub Shrine

This is the second in the series of alignment based shrines. This is the shrine to Beelzebub, representing Lawful Evil. Beelzebub is a hard one to pin down as an archdevil. In some places he's the lord of flies. In Pathfinder, he rules the seventh layer of Hell, the cold realm of Cocytus. In 5e, Beelzebub is known as Baalezebul and was the lord of Maladomini, the seventh layer of the Nine Hells, and one of th...

Cry 'Havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war

This week, we've got four engines of war!

The first is a simple two-man regular 'ol ladder. The ladder comes in a pre-made size but can be made longer by printing modular sections.

The second is a rolling ladder platform, that troops push up to the wall then can swing the ladder up for ascent. This one has rolling wheels designed to be attached with filament rivets (cut filament to length, insert, melt end with lighter and press it flat). Like the other ladder, this one is available in ...

OpenLOCK Dungeon Stone Angled Doors and Windows

Continuing to move forward on Dungeon Stone, we have OpenLOCK angled doors and windows.  Like last set, this has P, PA, PB, PB Mirrored, PC, PC Mirrored, Z and ZA, but this time for doors and windows.  We are getting close to being done with Dungeon Stone with 3-4 releases left for the base set.  Early next month I'll be posting a poll on Patreon for deciding where we go to next, along with some other questions about the future direction of the project.

OpenLOCK Dungeon Stone Angled

This is a monster release.  Between OpenForge Bases, Walls, Low Walls and Floors, this release has 108 stl files.

We have:

Dwarven Sentinels

Dwarven halls just aren't dwarven halls without enormous statues dedicated to the ancestors of the king.  We've got 4 different statues in 2 different formats.  You can print them as IO walls that attach onto your wall structure.  You can also print out the E pillar, and have free standing giant statues that are over 4 inches tall (6 when standing on the pillar.)

Dwarven Halls Release 2!

Now the dwarves can have corners! This set adds in all of the corner walls from the OpenLOCK S Series set. IL, IO, IT and IX, giving you a wall end, a corner, a tee and a wall cross.

We've also added in a set of plain dwarven floors.  We feel like the first floor set for Dwarven Halls is great for areas you want to highlight, but lets be honest, do those dwarves really want to put knotwork on every surface? No, they have beer drinking to do. Well, these floors can ...

Dwarven Halls Walls and Floors

With all the dwarven pieces Ecaroth has been publishing, I thought it was time to get a dwarven tileset. In my imagination, I see dwarven buildings all being made with thick, hearty walls. Because of this, I've decided to use the S-Series OpenLOCK tiles for this set. The thicker walls give much more room for designing awesome walls, and they lend a weighty feel to the set.

I've been wanting to make a set based on the S walls for some time.  The old sewer set basically follows this de...

Dwarven Rune Forge

The Dwarven folk have long been known for their skills as master smiths, building weapons of amazing power deep in the mountains. The tools needed to shape the metals for such weapons are very special, and far exceed those used by mundane smiths on the surface.

Second, we've added 2x4 & 4x2 diagonal tiles to give you not just 90 and 45 degree angles, but also 22.5 (pictured). We've seen walls like this in a number of modules, and thought it would be a good addition.  Third, every tile can be built as a square tile with floor on either side of the wall, or as a diagonal with f...
