We cleaned the pool *spoiler*

This week’s video is all about cleaning the pool! Thought you might want to see what it looks like before it goes live on Wednesday 😊

ep.7 we have no idea how to clean a pool

Guess who's just become a regular customer of our local bin company? This week, we ordered another green bin and made plans to clear the swamp in our pool to see what we're working with. We also took a look back at some cool engineering details from the 60s, and shared some frustrating issues involving our building consulting engineer. To conclude, we answered three questions from our curious neighbours: How are we recovering and resetting from all the work? Are we going to install solar pane...

60ft long steel beams coming in to save the day

If you've ever looked at a house, you'll know that the exterior walls typically sit directly on the foundation (a concrete thing). Well, ours don't. Instead, they are cantilevered about 24 inches over the foundation base, creating a tricky engineering problem to work around!

Small details like these are what make a home so aesthetically pleasing. In order to accommodate seismic upgrades and comply with new codes in our area, our engineer had to figure out a way to preserve not only the...

ep.6 that was harder than the drywall

After spending the last 7 days battling overgrown tree roots, branches, and prickly bushes, Nick and Jenna reflect on their career as landscapers. They contemplate the ups, downs, and the additional 7,000 sqft of prickly bushes they have yet to clear. Amidst the chaos, they discover some labeled branches, review their expenses, and finally address some questions: Will we alter the roofline? Have we uncovered any new details from the neighbors?

I found a problem with one of our posts

Hey again! It's Nick! Jenna has been encouraging me to post more, so I have made this mini "reel" or "short" about a structural post that we have an issue with. The plan is to make the swap once the roof is off, so there is very very little load on the post itself. Nice and safe!

ep.5 we opened a blackberry farm

Two truths and a lie: Nick parties hard in Vegas, we uncover a 12-foot retaining wall, and the engineer gives us a thumbs up. This week, as we wait for permits to go through, we begin work on the exterior of the home and uncover a few surprises. We discuss why homes in BC are so expensive, why we chose to renovate versus rebuild, and end the show with three questions from our nosy neighbors: How much of the home are we saving? What did our friends think when we first bought the place? Are we ...

The electrical panel that almost burned our house down

Hi everyone, it's Nick.

Following up with some additional technical details on a fun story from one of our previous podcasts. To set the stage, Jenna and I were just about to start demolishing the kitchen. Since the kitchen appliances were permanently wired in, we needed to turn off power to all the breakers before beginning our work. Once we finished the demolition, safely taped off the loose wires, and turned the power back on, we noticed a smell.

I immedi...

ep.4 the old owner's thoughts

After what felt like 142 bins later, we finally reached our first significant milestone. Listen to us as we work through removing the remainder of the paneling, drywall, and the process of deep cleaning not just one, but two homes. Jack the pug makes another appearance, and it isn't pretty. We wrap things up with more great questions: What do we do for work? Is this our full-time job? Has the previous owner expressed any interest? We also ask our listeners what they would like to hear in the ...

Mid Week Updates from Nick!

Hey everyone - it’s Nick! I’m going to share some fun / technical behind the scenes content every now and then. Let me know if that’s something you are interested in, and I can do it more frequently 😁.

In this short clip I’m showing off how our roof material (tar and gravel) is actually sitting on a membrane, not directly on the roof as I thought. This is great news as it will make the whole roof removal super easy!

ep.3 our abandoned home has no walls

A renovation project involves a lot of moving parts... and many close calls. Tune in to this episode to hear about the remainder of our drywall removal experience, some stressful last-minute coordination, our close call of having to unload the drywall bin, and some last-minute moving shenanigans. We also share a fun encounter with our neighbor (whom Nick mistook for someone else) and conclude the episode with two great questions from our Nosey Neighbors: Will Jenna continue to work on fiber a...

ep.2 the friends in our walls and the mistakes made

This week, we messed with the drywall removal and learned some lessons along the way. Oh, and did we drop the news yet? We moved! Dive in with us as we try to figure out how to order a new roof off Amazon, get our permits green-lit by the engineers, and say hello to our new "roommates" hiding in the ceiling (well, the ones we've found so far, anyway). Wrapping up, we tackle two of your top questions: What cool finds have we stumbled upon in the house? And what's the game plan for moving in - ...

ep.1 we nearly burned our house down

In this episode, we dive into the latest behind-the-scenes updates on our demolition journey, sharing entertaining stories from the process. We recount how we narrowly avoided an electrical fire, surfed on a tarp on the roof, and discovered an unexpected surprise within our home. To wrap things up, we answer the two most frequently asked questions from our Nosey Neighbours: How are we handling the mold issue? And is this property intended as a long-term home or a flip project?

Next week’s video!

We finally started on the kitchen yesterday.

We have to take the whole house down to the studs in order for a new roof. Our goal for a new roof is this summer 🤞

ep.0 the story of our abandoned home

This episode delves into the backstory of why our home was abandoned; how we found it, the purchasing process, our initial impressions, our plans for it, and ultimately addresses two of the most commonly asked questions: Are we working with professionals? And are we going to live there?

Announcement time!

Hey friends!

I have something really exciting to share with you all!

You might have seen my new series about renovating my abandoned home. If not, it's been quite popular. Honestly, I didn't think this many people would enjoy it.

That being said, there have been millions of questions asked about the home, and unfortunately, there are so many that I can't answer them all in my YouTube videos or IG Reels/TikToks. So I've started a Podcast with my par...
