Conventional Wisdom: Ichibancon 2016 - page 1

Man, it's been a WHILE since we did some convention comics on Patreon, hasn't it?  Well, here it is: the parts of Ichibancon 2016 you DIDN'T see in the main update!

The ambient music playing over the speakers at the Embassy Suites had been a source of great amusement in previous years.  I mean, most hotels have SOME kind of calm elevator music p...

I gotta confess: if this page wasn't for Patreon, I would have just copy/pasted actual screenshots for the top three panels.  But hey, if people are paying actual money for the privilege of reading this thing, then the least I can do is actually draw all of it myself, right?

And yeah, I know.  I know.  "Something homoerotic is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure?  However could make such a groundbreaking and original observation?"  But hey, that's just one of the many benefit...

One of these days I'm gonna draw an entire comic series about Megaweapon getting beat up.  There won't even be any jokes.  Just Megaweapon getting harmed over and over again.  This will make me happy.

...oh, and let's not forget orangutans totally being about to rape underage girls, THAT'S totally fine for television too.  More so than a teenager smoking, anyway (and I don't even LIKE smoking, I just think that's really ridiculous)

As always, the Universe as a singular entity refuses to allow Jenna to catch a break.

Also, have fun working out what all these various foods are references to!

Remember when I apologized for how I can't draw JJBA muscles?  Apparently I need to amend that statement to include faces.  I mean, let's face it: I can't just do a vague caricature like I usually do in these situations.  Hirohiko Araki's art style is just too distinctive, I gotta at least TRY to do it straight... with disastrous results.

But yeah, comic me is in no position to discuss "realistic" anything.

Conventional Wisdom: the Pre-Con Process

Man, I've severely neglected the Two Dollar crowd, haven't I?  Sorry, but with all the Christmas comics, I just haven't had time to write out any blog posts.  To be honest, I STILL don't have time, but I'm gonna write a quick one anyway, just to make it up to you guys.

I occasionally get asked what my Convention Preparation looks like, and I always chuckle sadly at the thought of me being organized enough to have any kind of a "process", let alone that knowing it would benefit an...

I have no idea why The Future apparently has no way of transferring files from one tablet to another.

Also, sorry this page is particularly sketchy.  And later than usual.  Between all those Christmas comics and just general holiday distractions, I'm really running behind on things right now.

...and that's as close as we're gonna get to me actually giving someone the finger.

If you're not clear on what this is all about: Crunchyroll uses the broadcast versions of JJBA, which have a lot of the more objectionable content covered up with really obnoxious black shading.  Now, I understand why they'd need to obscure stuff before putting it out in a way where anybody could stumble onto it without warning (though smoking?  REALLY?).  I also understand why that version w...

I mean, come on.  You've seen what my art style looks like.  I draw things that are cute and small.  Neither of those words exist in the world of JoJo.

But yeah, we're starting a whole new set of JJBA comics!  Before anyone asks, I'm skipping over the first season because that's the one I'd already seen, and I didn't want to make a list of shows I'd already watched once.  But if you really desperately want to see me do some comics with Speedwagon or whoever, there'...

As I said before, I have no idea what working on the set of a major motion picture is like, nor have I ever worked in a celebrity's fan club... but you know what? I've worked in a restaurant, and this is definitely how THAT works.  "Hey new kid, I don't like this job.  It's your job now!"

Two quick things before someone nitpicks this one to death:  First, I think this whole complaint is the result of the English translation of the title.  I'm absolutely not fluent in Japanese, but I have a vague recollection of hearing that "Hataraku Maou-sama!" doesn't specifically refer to a part-time employee, and would still be accurate even after he got promoted.  Second, if you're only familiar with the Funimation subs, you'll probably wonder what the heck I'm talking about, ...

I don't know if a fast food place would be considered more or less stressful than a nice, sit-down restaurant... and I'm never find out 'cos I'm never working at either again.  Seriously, I'm a TERRIBLE person to go out to eat with, since I get really antsy and short-tempered if I can see even the slightest hit of the behind the scenes goings on... and I legit can't be in the same room as anyone watching a Gordon Ramsey show.  For once, I was actually GLAD when the main plot of the sho...

Making characters be mean to Jenna is seriously one of the most difficult tasks I've ever faced as a writer.  Also, CRAP it's going to be hard to keep track of all these characters...

Oh hey, and just in case you were wondering, the break for Christmas comics will NOT be affecting the Patreon stuff.  I mean, if I get really bogged down, then a Patreon update might be a little late, sure, but that's it.  This storyline will keep going even while the MAIN comic is all Chri...

Far Out There: Origin of the Web-Species

The last couple of Conventional Wisdom blogs have been really nostalgic, so I might as well let Far Out There get in on the fun. I wanted to talk a bit about my primary influences during the creation of Far Out There… and I have to be really, super specific about that, otherwise we’ll be here all day. I am not exaggerating in the slightest when I say that I was raised on science fiction. Literally one of my earliest clear memories is of sitting on the couch with my parents watching first ...

I usually try to avoid drawing any comics until after I've had a chance to sit down and watch an anime all the way through, but I didn't feel the least bit bad about going ahead and drawing this one right away.  Dad Jokes work pretty much the same regardless of context.

But yeah, we're starting a new set of comics!  Sorry for the delay.  Just a heads up, though: this show's only half as long as the previous two, so don't expect this set of comics to run as long as they did. ...

I have never been on the set of a major motion picture, but I HAVE been to a bunch of anime conventions and this is pretty much how they all work.  The more people you have working on a thing, the less any of those people know about how that thing is supposed to run.

Also, HOLY CRAP THAT'S A LOT OF CHARACTERS TO UNLOAD AT ONCE

Patreon Index (Nov. 2015)

So, I think the pile of stuff I've put on Patreon has finally started to get big enough that simply scrolling through the Creator Posts isn't convenient anymore.  So, to simplify things, I'm gonna make posts like this on occasion that gather up all the links to all the various comics and blogs in one spot.  AND I'm going to make them visible to everyone, just to tease all those non-supporters with what you generous few get to see on a (mostly) regular bases!

So, funny thing: because I spent so much time down in Artist Alley, I had way too many table-related comic ideas to choose from.  In fact, I had two separate comics about tearing down on Sunday.  Obviously, that's one too many for a single update, so I figured I'd use one in the main update, and hold the other one back for this set... aaand then I forgot which one was which.  Yes, the comic you see here was SUPPOSED to be the one I put in the big update, and the other one was supp...

I'm surprised I got recognized in this get up as much as I did.  That's not to say it happened a lot, just that it happened at ALL.

By the way, this is another one of those comics where I STARTED to do a bunch of caricatures of real people, then gave up halfway through.  So, apologies to anyone who was at the table Saturday night and wonders why I left them out.  Ya'll are here... if you use your imagination.

The fun part about cosplaying from MST3k is always how excited MSTies get when they see it... but it's usually older people.  Like, the Dad who's just there to keep an eye on his kids and is happy to finally see a costume he recognizes.  It's a lot more unusual for it to be the kids who are the excited ones.  And these kids had some major bragging rights, too.  I never got around to seeing Cinematic Titanic live...

On a rational level, I know perfectly well that the way a lobby looks at 9am is different from what it will look like by lunchtime.  But it's still really weird to head down to the underbelly of the hotel in the morning before anyone's around, then not come back up until the place is packed.

And it was PACKED.  The past couple of years, since AUSA moved into the new hotel, it's felt kinda... empty.  Which was the point, obviously.  You don't move into a new location if ...

As I've mentioned on numerous occasions, I miss very little about living in Washington DC.  But man, it's a great place to have the thought "I feel like taking a walk".  And I didn't even make it down to any of the "historic" places, I'm just talking about wandering around the neighborhoods up north.  Honestly, most of the good memories I have of DC are just from taking walks down random streets to see where I'd end up... I had VERY little to do in those days.

Also, does any...
