Gotta love a nice, refreshing "Sunporo." It's way better than a "Badwiser."

I'm gonna hold off saying much else about episode 17 here, because I gotta stretch my thoughts out across SEVERAL more comics after this one. Yeah, as befitting an episode with some pretty major plot developments, I wound up getting a LOT of material out of this one...

SELF OWN.

...and yeah, I know it's not actually that uncommon of a LAST name (hey Alan, hi Cheryl, what's up Alan Jr.) but I've sure as heck never heard it used as a FIRST name anywhere outside of Baccano. But hey, I guess it sounds normal to the same ears that think naming a guy "Hot Tub Squirt" is totally unremarkable.

...also, just in case anyone was wondering: as far as I know, I'm not related to any of those more famous "Ladds" mentioned above. Lord knows we weren't in any w...

NO, I'm not gonna explain the context down here! Where's the fun in that? Also, I'm not going to explain any of these OTHER notes I took, either:

"Ketchup kills Lum before music even plays"

"How many of you have taken candy from strangers this weekend?"

"Simba Pillow Fight"

"King of Darkness, King of Hell, King of the Jungle"

There are some who would say that this comic is flawed because I never actually showed the Digimon being referenced here. o those people. i counter that nobody should ever want to look at Sinduramon, and we are all better off with my not forcing that upon you. Okay, it's not THAT terrible, but I do think ol' Thunderchicken is one of the stupidest-looking of all the Devas, and there's some fierce competition for that title.

...and I'm actually exaggerating the first bit a lot more than the second. I went into my first viewing of Baccano already mildly spoiled, so I wasn't even all THAT confused by the chaos unfolding in front of me. I knew i was a show about immortals and the chronology of the show was all wonky and the characters were weirdos and so forth, I was just playing catch up with the fast-paced editing of the episode. But now, on what's at least my third watch-through of Baccano, I'm l...

Look, you can't mention "Digimon" and "camping" in any proximity to each other without me making SOME kind version of this reference. And then episode 16 had to go and introduce the gag of a ghost story, and there you have it.

Also, YES, I KNOW THE "CAMP" THE KIDS IN DIGIMON ADVENTURE WERE AT ISN'T THE SAME THING AS THE WEEKEND TRIP THE TAMERS KIDS WERE ON FOR THIS EPISODE.

...and I didn't even mean this to be a dig at Endless Eight.  I was just thinking about how Haruhi does a much clunkier job of being presented "non-sequentially" than Baccano does, since only the later actually integrates that into the episodes themselves. It wasn't until after I wrote the comic that I remembered Haruhi did some more literal goofing around with the timeline that didn't go over too well with people.

BUT ANYWAY...

I mean, yeah. The dub didn't lie to us this time, that really IS refered to as an "energy drink" even in the original episode (I think the bottle is supposed to resemble Oronamin C) ...but that didn't stop all us fans at the time making jokes about what the bottle "really" was.

Also, somebody looking at this is currently imagining a fanfic where Gatomon gets jealous over Wizardmon ...

To be clear, I don't mean that as a slight, just an observation that the tone of the song "Guns & Roses" REALLY shifts a lot between the verses and the chorus. That opening sounds like something that might have been played on Cowboy Bebop, while the climax truly does sound like the musical cue tat plays when a studio full of middle-aged housewives clap for the host as he enters and waves. And the beauty of it is: given the content of Baccano as a show, that shift ...

I will always, ALWAYS stop to notice any silly sign, logo, or brand name in an anime that's an only slightly altered version of something else. Without fail.

Also, I'm gonna level with you all: I already had two whole comic ideas before I'd even finished watching the into, it's gonna be a few weeks before I even get into the plot of the show itself. Yeah, it's gonna be one of THOSE watch-throughs.

It's this, or a snazzy little vest, and I'm not sure which is less intimidating. I mean, yeah, I know the design of the individual Digimon is pretty much beyond the control of the show, and I still stand by the rest of the episode being pretty good, but MANY this is an odd design choice right here.

Okay look, I know the art in the Adam Warren Dirty Pair comics doesn't ACTUALLY look like that, but there's just something about the lipstick that causes the lips to register as GINORMOUS in my brain. I'm not a fan. The same with the art design in Dirty Pair Flash. I know they're hardly Code Geass levels of gangly, but it's distinct enough from the originals for me to notice it in a bad way. And that's more than enough reason for me to make a snarky co...

Oh gee, I wonder if this comic is going to result in a rambling, unsolicited rant about how bad the cartoonist's time living in Washington DC was? Well no, I won't do that... THIS TIME. After all, I don't have to because whatever you just imagined after reading my self-effacing meta-reference it good enough already! I WIN!

I mean, Otaku no Video DOES end with the whole cast voyaging out into space, so it's not COMPLETELY out of nowhere that my brain would draw this connection... but it is still a bit random of me. Also, just FYI, the dude is supposed to be singing a line from "Space Truckin" by Deep Purple, though Patreon's re-scaling of the image was a bit rougher than expected.

But anyway, speaking of things that ended way too soon, we've technically reached the end of the Dirty Pair mate...

I mean, they've only barely even got wiki pages, let alone meaningful plot lines.

That's one of the other things that's struck me while going back to re-watch Tamers all the way through: these early episodes show JUST enough of the other kids in Takato's class that it seems like the seeds are being planted for them to become bigger characters down the line. And yeah, I guess THREE of them do, but then there's these other kids who just sort of evaporate in later arcs. I gue...

...and this isn't even meant as a political joke, really, more of a general commentary on society as a whole.

A few weeks ago, I had the grave misfortune of being accidentally exposed to some political YouTubers. Who they were or what they were harping on about doesn't matter, and that's the whole point. Somehow, I had the epiphany that I could copy/paste their political buzzwords about things that actually matter with fluff about "Web3" and "Digital Ownership" and whatever, and the p...

If you follow me on any of the hellscapes that are social media, then you already saw this picture. What the heck? Did I travel back in time to the year 2005? Not quite, I ACTUALLY took a trip out to Eastern Carolina where, it just so turns out, one of the VERY LAST SUNCOAST LOCATIONS still exists! Yup, for whatever reason, a scant handful of the places didn't switch over to to the FYE branding along with all the other Suncoast and Sam Goody and Media Play locations. And even as the retai...

I mean, I need to be clear: I've never read any of the Dirty Pair novels, so for all I know Auntie here might have been a prominent character in all of them right from the start... but as far as the ANIME goes, this lady just turns up right the heck out of nowhere halfway through the OVAs, and everyone's just like she's always been around. Continuity isn't exactly Dirty Pair's strong suit, but this is still pretty distracting to me.

I dunno, I'm as surprised as anyone. And the worst thing is, it's juuuuuuust enough of an idea that I couldn't naturally squeeze in Scribbles and turn it into a Writer's Block joke. Granted, I might have had more material if I ever actually got around to WATCHING Dirty Pair Flash... but that day is not today.

Anyway, watch me post this and, several hours later, I come up with an absolutely brilliant joke related to totally obscure WCW gimmick match or whatever.

Well, it had to come up at some point, didn't it? For those of you who either don't know or just forgot: the teacher in Tamers is drawn a lot like the way grown-up Kari was drawn in the last episode of Digimon Adventure 02, where Kari was established to want to be a teacher herself. Building on the gag, the Saban dub gave her the same voice actress as Kari, and you'd better believe the fandom noticed.
