Finally reviving the mmu2

A long needed hiatus. I haven't had the best love for the mmu2 but when it's working it's pretty darn amazing.

I was on the beta test team and experienced it's ups and downs first hand. In the end it was an awesome adventure even though I think it's why I went bald.

Every time a user has frustrations and wants to quit trying to get the thing running perfectly I know how they feel but once you nail the secret settings and whatever magic goes into alignment is a thing of beauty. <...

Feeling refreshed.

Wedding season is catching up to me and decided to take a mini social media hiatus where I only spent certain times of the day online while I caught up to editing and my wedding couples.

I did take a day to continue hammering out Prusa Slicer videos as well as making a list of needed video equipment to expand the live streams and eventual mini videos. I also jotted down a list of sweet mods to try and looked through all my boxes of goodies to see what I have to work with.

I'll t...

Mosquito MK3s Prusa Slicer Profile

I've made some great headway into porting over the infamous Pretty PLA profiles for the Mosquito Hotend.

Need to know more about the hotend? I got you here: https://www.sliceengineering.com/shop/the-mosquito-hotend

Need a way to mount it? I got you here: https:/...

Patreon Funding

Alright friends it's time to figure out what to do next. I have some a couple of ideas and let see which you choose.

1. I know I need more cameras for live streams. Probably a close up cam as well as a for sure overhead camera. I'd also like to upgrade to a full time streaming PC so I can switch to a stable OBS and have control over camera angles and scenes. This isn't going to be cheap and will eat into the funding pretty good but I feel it's the best candidate moving forward since I...

Tuning a new profile.

Thanks to the hard work Yuri has put in to bring Linear Advance 1.5 to the Prusa ecosystem I've been able to tune retractions even more.

This is PETG and it's printing amazingly with the new firmware and the seams are looking as minimal as they can get. Should have a preliminary profile to share within the next couple days as I continue to mess around so stay tuned!!!

Quick surgery day.

Took the time to do a warranty swap on the very first mosquito hotend I bought. I was order number 36 I believe when it first launched and with that took some growing pains which were quickly resolved by the Slice Team but it meant new parts.

Fast forward a year later and I was chatting about my old hotend to which they said if it's old enough they do warranty coverage on new parts to get those first time users up to date

A few days later I got my care package and today I swappe...

CF parts going out today!

Getting all the orders together for shipping. Soooooooo much CF Petg from Atomic printed.

Thanks to all these orders I've been able to push 20kg of Petg to test out how durable the Slice Vanadium nozzles are.

Not a single clog and not a single print chnage. I've been sending the exact same gcode since day one and haven't had to adjust once.

I've also pushed 5kg of random CF petg through a Nozzle X and it too has been doing really well. Congrats to both manufacturers for m...

Warhammer MK3 upgrade day!

I'm finally going to sit down and properly terminate the wires, switch to a BL Touch, and fine tune the duet powered MK3 I have.

If I have time I'm going to try and mess with a few other things and get it working so I can use it every day.

I'll jump on live stream today after lunch and hopefully knock it all out in a few hours but can't promise that. Lol. I'm just not super good with Duet and Reprap firmware yet but I'm getting there.

Just realized I also need to properly...

Mosquito time!!!

Oh yes! My stock MK3 is going to be pushed a bit to test this beauty.

Not expecting too much but I will run some test objects and only swap the extruder so hopefully we have a good set of side by side images.

Stay tuned!!!!

Discord????

Would anyone think the value of being a patron would be more worthwhile if I offered a personal discord to patrons so they can reach out and ask questions?

I've seen a few members drop off, 9 users total all time, but would like the value of this to be more than just to keep me testing and sharing the cool things unless that's what you like.

Give me some advice in the comments of what you'd like to see from me as features for you my awesome patrons.

Artillery SW-X1

I'm impressed. I've also had some issues.

Issues first.

The first issue was incorrect nozzle. Lol. I was immediately swapping for a p3d coated volcano nozzle and noticed they used one for 3mm filament instead of one for 1.75 lame.

Second is a grooved idler which aligns the filament path a bit off.

Artillery SW-X1 Unboxing, Build, and First print!

Join me tonight on youtube at 5pm USA Central time for an unboxing of the Artillery SW-X1. Disclaimer. I purchased this with my own funds so this is not a paid review or endorsement. It's amount of whizbang features for the price puts it well beyond a standard Creality so I figured let's see what the hype is about and share that with everyone else.

Feature wise it really does outpace the competition and it is an open source printer with it's stock MKS Gen L board and firmware freely av...

Duet 2 firmware

For those who'd like to see my configs for the Duet 2 MK3 here are all the ones I edited and I've also included my Z gantry level macro that mimics the Z calibration done on the MK3.

So far it's working great print wise. Remember that I'm using 0.9 degree motors on X and Y and I'm using the Bunny Science 3.5:1 extruder add-on for the extruder. You can easily change those settings in the config.g file.

So for a stock MK3 you'll do the following:

M92 X100 Y100 E280 instead ...

Software downgrade is better?

So to make my super high end videos I've been using Adobe Premiere. While it's complicated and somewhat easy to understand it's slow and has caused me some grief. Today I decided I'd try a few free movie editing programs and while testing some neat ones I ended up trying iMovie...
Well. It wins hands down. I was able to edit and export a video with everything I need in the same quality in far less than half the time without knowing how to use the program. I drag and dropped the 2 clips, tr...

Update!

Wedding season is upon me so I took a little social media break from Friday till now so if it's been a little too quiet I apologise.

I mean I was still on but was only checking once a day vs multiple times. Saturdays will definitely be a social media off day from now till October so if you don't hear from me during the weekend I'm not gone, just busy with my awesome couples but I haven't forgotten about all y'all awesome humans.

I did have a chance to use the newish Slic3r beta ...

That Bunny Science

So why do I have a duet powered MK3???

If I were to just add mods like this 3.5:1 gearing box on a stock prusa I'd have to run to my computer, edit the microstepping line to 1/16 as I didn't want to run this at 980 e steps. 490 is much safer for an 8 bit board so testing can be more normal, compile the firmware, then finally flash the new firmware. Maybe 10-15 minutes.

On the duet adding this involved logging into my phone, editing one config line, hitting save, and the printer r...

My day job

Sorry it's been a bit sporadic with posts. I've got a lot to post about but need time to relax and write them up but my photography job is starting to creep in so I need to start balancing my schedule and get it optimized.

I've had 4 shoots in the last 5 days and thousands of images to edit plus a lot of film got used up once again. That's right. I'm a hipster.

Fun fact. I used to buy old film cameras, fix them, then bling them out. This here is a wonderful example of my favorit...

A day of live printing.

One of the things I love to do is go to art shows and local meetups and setup a live printing area and show off a bunch of the sexy prints I keep on my shelf. Today was no different.

Our big comic book shop hosted free comic book day and this year they offered free artist space to setup and show their wares. I snagged a big box of comic book related prints, my trusty Bear MK3, and plenty of energy for the adventure.

I talked to over 60 families and general humans about printing ...

Progress with Duet!

So here are some neat things about Duet.

Macros!

Basically Duet runs on gcode. Everything is gcode. Your firmware? Gcode. Duet allows you to make macros made up of gcode which I used to create something that is basically Calibrate Z on the MK3.

Using gcode commands I home, move the extruder and bed to center, raise Z to 205mm, lower motor current to 30% of what it's set to, then raise Z by 20mm slowly to level the gantry. It then homes and finishes everyth...

Running on duet is better and killing me.

On the top we have here the Duet 2 running on the Bear MK3. The area where it gets more matte I sped up everything to 150% from the base 120mm infill, 80mm inner perimeters, and 40mm external perimeters.

On the bottom we have no component changes minus using the einsy retro.

There is definitely some quality boosts running duet. Why? Magic I think.

Sadly I can't for the life of me figure out consistent probing so I've mashed the nozzle a couple mm onto the bed a dozen or s...

The SKR V1.3 board

The future is pretty sexy and cheap.

$22 gets you a 32bit board with uart and SPI built in plus a dedicated probe pin plus actual fuses plus TFT touch screen ready plus big mosfets.

I can't wait to try this out on a build and see what 32 bit marlin has to offer.

Now for simple context most 8 bit boards running the atmega 2560 chip like the einsy and Rambo boards have a max steps per second of about 40,000-60,000. A 32 bit board with this specific processor can do 500,000 ...

Einsy retro is dumb!

So today I ripped out the Einsy Retro and swapped in a full duet board.

Why????

Apararently I've learned that the super small rsense chip compared to the full einsy Rambo is an issue with coolstep LDO motors.

My failing to get the board running is that the drivers just won't work with the smaller resistors. Basically unless I replace the extruder with a cheap motor with high inductance and high resistance it won't work very well. 😭😭😭

Catching up on CF print orders!

I've added additional help by converting my Abrams printer by RC-CNC over to making CF Petg parts for my orders.

I have 4 outstanding orders and 4 are sitting in my basement waiting for the last bits to be printed! I also have just enough Atomic CF PETG to finish those outstanding orders.

Once those ship I'll open up orders to those who are still interested. So it's time to guage interest and see if I need to order even more CF PETG.

If you'd like some send me a message o...

Einsy retro hates me 😅

Hours and hours of changes and questions to smart people and nobody had come up with an answer.

Basically whenever we get to retractions or lots of small moves the extruder decides to just give up.

I've run the firmware in Marlin 2.0 and 1.1.9 and changed all sorts of paraments. I've replaced hoteneds twice and increased and decreased motor currents. Everyone I know is stumped. Heck even the TMC report says everything is fine.

As a last ditch effort I'm going to make conn...

Bunny hop hop!

As I mentioned previously I wanted to test the theory of gearing reducing 602. I know it has but I wanted a way to test without having to rip the entire hotend off.

Thanks to people at bunny science we have this skelestruder style extruder that will fit on any extruder. How? It shifts the motor laterally and hearing it using a belt. Now it's almost like a remote drive.

You can check it out on thingiver...

Making headway.

Custom prusa is of course exhibiting the same issues a regular prusa has which is some minor uneven extrusion but using the 0.9 degree motors on the x and y have completely eliminated vertical banding as it should. 🤓

Switching to geared extruders like the BMG sure do help this. As my research continues on this I've found that duet had a long conversation about how prusa implemented Linearity correction to help with this.

In the end the conversation turned into one of pure dire...
