Diva Painting

I love the movie The Fifth Element. This is the diva from that movie. I had a good time painting her.

State of the Panel Address

With a picture of a crocodile I sent to a client so he could pick the style he wanted. He ended up going with something completely different from these guys.

I have a whole slew of Prompts to catch up on today, as well as character designs for a children's book I'm working on. I've decided what my next coloring book is going to be and I've started to gather materials for that. MY plan is to get that finished in about 6 months or so and see if I can get two books out by the end of the ye...

Captain T Design Test

I was still trying to figure out what the visual style for this comic would be. I thought maybe super colorful, but color slows everything down.

Captain T Concept Art: Inside the Blue Parrot

If I were to re-draw this, I would add a LOT more people. Again, a hell of a time with the perspective, but the results don't look terrible. It needs people though.

Captain T Concept Art: Entrance

The perspective for this panel took forever. I think this is probably one of the last things I did on paper for perspective. Now I do everything digitally.

Captain T Concept Art: The Blue Parrot

The Blue Parrot is an homage to Casablanca. It was Ferrari's place, Rick's rival.

Captain T Concept Art: The Map

This is probably one of my favorite watercolors from this series. I feel like I nailed the background and communicating information non-verbally.

Captain T Concept Art: T being sneaky.

I was trying to convey some of his personality here, but I feel like he is still a bit too stiff.

Captain T Concept Art: Marketplace

Thi page is closer to the dirtiness I wanted to have in Tradepost, but to me everyone is "too human," and I need a variety of body shapes.

Captain T Concept Art: Tradepost

I didn't make Tradepost look DIRTY enough. The ship shrunk in size from the last few paintings.

Captain T Concept Art: Over Tradepost

I think it was about this drawing that I realized just how BIG the Constitution actually is. Look how tiny those windows are. Look at the tiny cannons.

Captain T Concept Art: Captain T!

Here is the captain himself.

Captain T Concept Art: The Derigible

My first idea for Captain T's ship was to use the U.S.S. Constitution as my model for the base, but then I realized that is a ship that is run by a crew of 100 or more so probably not good for one cat flying alone. The balloon is right though.

Captain T Concept Art: Addie

Captain T is an idea I've been working on for a very long time. This week I'm going to be sharing some concept art I did to go with a script when I was trying to pitch it as an animated movie. I've since decided to just do it as a comic first, but I like how some of the art came out. I had developed a lot from those watercolors I did in college of the story with my grandmother, but I'm still very rough. To me, a lot of these look half-finished.

Let's finish up the week with another dapper cat. This one went with the other one.

Interpretive Dream

This is a painting I did in college. It's not the best photo of it because the painting is currently in storage and all I had was a cell phone picture. You get the general idea though.

Medusa fighting a Leviathan WIP

This was a commission piece I completed in 2019 for a long time friend and fan. He said he wanted something dark with tentacles so... This is what he got. I had a lot of fun drawing it.

Dapper Cat Painting

I gave this painting to a friend who ended up dying of cancer so the painting was donated somewhere after her death. I have no idea where this ended up.

Red Nosed Saki Monkey Sketches

These are SUPER early sketches and color tests for the Red Nosed Saki Monkey for the kid's book about the salamander. I have a long way to go on the book.

Glaucous Macaw

Working on that kid's book, the writer included the Glaucous Macaw, which is a very cool looking bird. Bright blue with long tail feathers and able to mimic human language. There's only one problem: it is extinct in the wild. I have to replace the bird with another native bird from the area. But for the moment, it was fun to draw.

Salamander Drawings

I'm working on a kid's book right now about a Red Salamander living in the Amazon Rainforest. There's a few different creatures I'm going to be drawing for this book. These are just some preliminary sketches to figure out how to draw a Salamander.

This is one of the pages from my coloring book. I really like the way the fabric and art nouveau design around her turned out.

Tokyo High Cover

Tokyo High was a webcomic that aired on Modern Tales back in the early 2000s I did a guest week for. This was the cover image for that guest week as well as my reference, my "build" in photoshop, and then the final drawing, which was done digitally. This was very early for me using digital art. Now, with Clip Studio Paint, there are even perspective tools. Technology is wild.

The Wooden Sword

A long time ago I did a test for a graphic novel called The Wooden Sword about a Roman gladiator earning their freedom in the arena. This was one of the first fully digital pieces I ever did. I like the color theory behind this piece, but I'm not the biggest fan of the final technique. I think this was done in Photoshop 7.0 though so it was a very old version of the program. Technology has advanced now.

"Build Me!" says Spontaneous the Cat

This is a paper model you can print out and build to own your very own Spontaneous the cat. This model was created for me by Mike Hungerford, who used to read my comics back in the day before we became friends. Attached are the PDF pages to print out. I recommend a heavy-card stock as it holds up better than printer paper. Enjoy!

Painting Puppies

Part of being a professional artist is you have to occasionally do tests for the author or publisher. They'll give you a brief description and see what you come up with. This was a test I did for a kid's book about painting puppies different colors. The watermark I add to such pieces to prevent the receiver from just using the art without paying for it. I also only sent low-resolution copies of the art at this stage to protect my work. They honestly rejected it because I included a Muslim gir...
