Fanime is coming up in a few days (I'll be in the Artist Alley at table 1202) and I'm doing my best to finish and post the chapter before I leave. So far it's looking good and I should be able to release it in 2 days unless I run into some 3D software bug.

This painting is inspired by my recent trip to China. Growing up there I always had poor health and would cough up a lot of phlegm, and every time I went back I would bring a smog mask. This time I forgot to pack mine, so the first few days back I thought I could just tough it out. I ended up developing a fever, coughing none stop, and my lungs burned so much.

It took forever to make the models and set the scene up, but when it comes to actual comic making, it took only 20 minutes to paint over the 3D render (seen below) into a finished panel :)
The full video process will be part of the May $10 rewards~
My team just finished the Jen model who will be appearing briefly in the new chapter :) She was definitely one of the harder models with all her gadgets. Her jacket cape was purposely not included because flowy fabric is very hard to pose in 3D and it would just be faster for me to draw it, but everything else is a huge time saver :)

Working on the new chapter and before I do a detailed render, I test out the scene first with a rough one (notice it's quite noisy and low resolution).
After everything is properly rendered, I'll do drawing in the details. It's a bit funny how it used to be that drawing takes the longest time, but now with 3D, it's making the models and setting up the scene that takes the longest. The drawing part now is one of the shorter processes.

I've been feeling pretty art blocked lately. Not that I don't have ideas to draw, but I haven't been happy with my level of execution. Just something about the anatomy, colors, composition etc that wasn't good enough, hence I haven't finished my last WIP with the smog masks.
In between working on my comics I've decided to get back to doing photo studies which I haven't done in years lol. I think it'll help me gain some new insight on what I'm lacking right now.

Inspired by my time in China. The air was so bad I actually got a fever from coughing so much and the burning in my lungs was so painful. Normally I would have a mask ready for when I go back, but I forgot to bring it so for the first few days in China I was really sick again.

This took a little over 2 hours. I was going to add a human figure but it ruined the composition so I added a few birds instead :)

My last painting used a 3D background, in this drawing I wanted to show some shortcut techniques when painting backgrounds in 2D. The current work in progress took about an hour. Next I'll be adding the maple leaves and figure.
I just bought a small Japanese maple earlier today, and it's been on my wishlist forever. . I'm so happy I had to draw a big one too :D

The entire thing took about 6 hours, 1 is setting up the 3D model, the rest are recording painting process.

I originally made the room in Sketchup but that program can't handle character models so everything is being converted into Blender by my team.
Here's a quick test render of the room to make sure all the textures were transferred properly. And yes, that is a body pillow on Vance's bed :p
I'm excited to share the 3D model of this in the future so everyone can explore the small details hidden in the designs :)

Colin, the Blender specialist on my team, was working on converting the Sketchup model I made of Vance's dorm room from many years ago into a Blender file when he noticed something not right.
I felt a little better after more rest so I started working on the figure, it's not done yet but coming along. This is about another hour of work, I also touched up more on the background, though it's hard to tell from here.

Here's an update from yesterday's wip. I was only able to work one hour on it today because my mystery illness flared up again this morning and I had to rest in bed until 5pm :(

In the past I would sketch out the chapter's storyboard, but now that I have the 3D models to work with, it's much easier to make a rough timeline of keyframes in the 3D program. This allows me to quickly flesh out the composition and flow of each panels with ease :)
I'm looking forward to sharing the next chapter of my comic soon!
The recent news about the dead sperm whale found with 64 pounds of plastic reminded me of my old painting about plastic pollution.
I hope we'll leave something more beautiful for the future generations than this. Small things like recycle and don't litter will make a world of difference.
