The larval mimic is two monsters: the weird amorphous larvae that infest the underground beneath cities, and the mimic that takes humanoid (or even human) form and infiltrates the society above.

Surprise, surprise, it is yet another wizard! Shocking, I know. This one is a sphinx, who lives in a house under a hill and keeps his magical items in an extradimensional maze.

Who hunts dragon eggs, buried in the plains to the east of the empire? Scumbag murderhobos, that who! But who else? Those crazy Dunverclains! Where do they come from? Why are they so crazy? What kind of dragon egg did we find? Roll a d20 to find out!

This month's monster is the minions of Glaksigul, the bat-god mentioned in A Market in the Woods. You can also become a follower of the bat god yourself, gaining boons and observing taboos (using the divine patrons rules found in The Nameless Grimoire).
The Dungeon World and Labyrinth Lord rules are in separate pdfs this time.

A new species of deadly monster has been found! Can they be driven out of the woods? Are they just the mutated descendants of the last settlers here? Will this happen again? The cryptid birdmen are ready to kill you and take your stuff, just as you would do to them!

Here's an updated draft of the game, which is still in a quick start format.
There's six monster roles this time: the Beast, the Colossus, the Horde, the Impersonator, the Stalker, and the Venerated.
I still haven't got any specific monster types finished yet, but I'm working on them. I think we'll start to see them pretty soon.
Please share with whomever you think might be interested, and if you get a game together, let me know how it goes.

Also, Nathan made a t-shirt with the Matron on it at Redbubble: https://www.redbubble.com/people/thewitchespi...

I wrote up a rough essay on the root of the conflict between civilization and the wilderlands in The Company of Monsters. This explains what the monsters are fighting for.

I did a bit of work on the character sheets for The Company of Monsters. This includes a few rules tweaks but nothing major. Oh, and I think the damage die for the Venerated might be wrong (I'll fix it for the next iteration).

So, hey.
You may have heard already, but this month Patreon is switching who pays their processing fees. Instead of us creators, now it will be you supporters. They are passing some of it on to creators, but mostly, this is an increase in both how much you will pay and how much of that money Patreon will keep.
The more people you pledge to, the larger their additional charges. A project that charges per-pledge instead of per-month will also incur more additional charges.
Patreon in...

This is the first public playtest draft of The Company of Monsters, a Powered by the Apocalypse rpg. The game's main goal is to let you play this Patreon project's monthly monsters, instead of just seeing them as antagonists for your murderhobos to massacre. Instead, you play the monsters who kill the adventurers!
This version is pretty bare-bones. You'll need to know how to run Apocalypse World and/or Dungeon World in order to run The Company of Monsters as it stands right now. We'll be addin...

Hello patrons! Four years ago this month, we started releasing monthly monsters here on Patreon. Instead of getting nostalgic, though, let's talk about the future.
Firstly, the monster this month is the first public playtest draft of The Company of Monsters. You got to see an earlier playtest draft several months ago; this one is much more complete, as far as quick-starts go. At some point, this game will completely replace the Dungeon World half of this project. The monsters, as antagonists, ...

Both Dungeon World and Labyrinth Lord stats are provided in the same pdf this time.
Yes, I did watch Candyman again, just the other day. In case you were wondering.

I have looked over the print proofs for Dungeon Full of Monsters and they are good, so I have just sent out DriveThruRPG coupons to all current backers for both softcover and hardcover versions. Take your pick, or buy them both if you feel so compelled.
You still have to pay for printing and shipping yourself, and real talk, these are pricey: 30-something bucks for the softcover, over 40 for the hardcover, because they are 352 pages of premium full-colour POD awesomeness.
If you didn't g...

I have just sent all current patrons a DriveThruRPG comp coupon for our long-awaited, finally finished Labyrinth Lord megadungeon book:
Dungeon Full of Monsters.
This book collects the many dungeons we've been releasing, along with all the monsters that appear in them, into a single not-so-slim volume. The monster stat blocks have enough information you can use them with most any old school fantasy rpg, including The Nightmares Underneath. You could probably use Dungeon World or World of...

It's a monster, but also kind of another asshole wizard. It comes from some other plane, in search of magical light sources, and builds a cult of gullible humans to steal them. It gives them help, in the form of weird and useful magical items, then leaves them to face the consequences of their crimes when it departs.

A dungeon full of ice, and ice gnomes, an ice giant. Also, there is a black flame that (if it doesn't kill you) leads to the Frost World, which you can take on as a divine patron, if you, too, are tired of all this heat in the world.

Here is an example of a divine patron I designed for The Nightmares Underneath. With this one, the format is a little more rigid than what I did for the Virhemoth and the Mother of a Hundred Faces. Depending on how useful each sub-heading is in play, I will add those parts in where they are currently lacking, but I'm still experimenting with a bunch of it.
Because these rules primarily rely on gaining boons and taboos (i.e. special powers balanced by restrictions) based on your level, I think ...

This month I am trying something new with monsters as deities and divine patrons (sort of like you find in DCC). The Virhemoth is an evil deity, so maybe it's counter-productive to pledge your soul to her, but I suppose some people are just desperate enough...

Here is a pdf with some of the basic moves and 4 archetypes: The Beast is an animal, without language or tools. The Numinous is a wizardy monster, strange and sorcerous. The Stalker is a stealthy killer. The Venerated is an icon to the monsters of the wilderlands, dispensing advice and assistance.
The travelling rules are not yet finished, use Perilous Wilds for now and roll with whatever stats make sense.
