What happened in 2023?

Well, a lot. But also NOT a lot, depending on where you're looking.

My offline life has kept me extremely busy (physically/mentally/emotionally) for the past few years, but even more so this year, as I shipped my first game in five years: Immortals of Aveum. IoA is a 1st person shooter, but with magic, set in a new world with a bunch of lore. I was a producer (project manager) on the...

Dibella

A linocut of the divine of art and beauty. I had the idea for this some months ago, but did not get the chance to execute it until last month. It's obviously inspired by the Roman Venus statues, as well as her depictions in prior games. My favorite part has to be how the gradient in the lilies came out.

These will be going out this weekend as last month's Oathman reward. If your address isn't up to date, now's a great time to update it! This month will be another off month, but I'...

February Patronage (still on break)

Greetings!

As you may have noticed, I forgot to pause the Patreon this month. I'm going to do my best to get at least a post or two up, and of course create the physical mailer for my Oathmen, but if the unexpected charge was a problem for you please contact me and I'll happily issue a refund.

One thing I definitely want to do this year is put together a website for myself to contain some of my favorite and most important works. And also take it as an opportunity to up...

Happy New Year! (still on haitus)

Hello, everyone! This Patreon is still on break, and likely to remain so for the foreseeable future.

However, I wanted to take a brief moment to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and fulfilling 2023~! 2022 really didn't work out like I wanted it to, but there's nothing like the turning of the calendar to try to turn things around, eh?

Here are a few things that have happened since I stopped posting midway through the year:

The game I've been working on, Immor...

Daedric Realms as imagined by Midjourney

Click on the picture above to zoom in and see the caption for what realm and prince it represents.

Midjourney is an AI Art Generator where you provide prompts (for example, "a rainy field with rainbows") and it generates you a piece of art. Most of these were run a few months ago, and the algorithm for the tool has improved significantly since then. They were also cleaned up, color adjusted, and in some cases composited from multiple images in Photoshop.

These are spli...

Mudcrab Merchant... finally

Finished carving and printed this guy, finally, after starting it in March. I'll mail it out to everyone who was a Oathman patron in March this weekend.

Unfortunately, things aren't looking like they're going to return to a creatively fulfilling place anytime soon, and I'm considering shutting down the Patreon rather than hitting the pause button every month.

Lore Buff Guide v3.1, and my absence

Hey folks.

You may have noticed that I've not been around in the past... month? More? I officially put the Patreon on a break at the end of March, which means that I've not been posting but also means that you've not been charged for your support. I've just now realized that Patreon apparently doesn't show that anywhere to anyone, which really sucks. As I mentioned in previous posts, I've been exceptionally busy and my mental health hasn't been great. I've had to turn down some f...

GUARanteed to love you!

One of the best things about printmaking is the ability to revisit past blocks. I originally carved this design in 2017 and it was part of my first set of Valentines Day prints. At that time I printed it on a sort of marbled card with stamps, and included a heart design around the guar.

The first thing I did in revisiting it for 2022 was to take the cutting tools out again and get rid of ...

Make your own Smolder Scrolls - New and Improved!

Zenimax Online is sitting out Smolder Scrolls this year, but they kindly chose to highlight my previous tutorial on making your own! I've updated it heavily, and it's now also hosted over on the Imperial Library. Updated tutorial follows below:

Thoughts on: House Sadras

Let's recap.

Prior to the 4th era, the Empire kept a close leash on Morrowind. Legion garrisons were found near most major settlements, and they strictly controlled Morrowind's economy through taxation on the export of staples (eg. saltrice, kwama eggs) and the prohibition of independent export of luxury goods (Dwemer artifacts, ebony, volcanic glass, bug musk). The Septims had also taken control of Morrowind's government by abducting and raising its queen and marrying her to a general ...

January Char Gen Art

January actually went pretty OK in the art department. In addition to the monthly Oathman print, I did three drawings based on the character art idea generator at ghostchoir9.com/charart

I decided to post them as one post because I thought that I'd have more of them, and they'd be more sketchy than they ended up being. But I didn't and they didn't, so I think in the future I'll go back to posting them he...

Roundup: End of 2021

What a year. What a decade. Long story short, my ass got kicked. While I have been incredibly fortunate all things considered, my mental (and sometimes physical) health has been driven into the gutter by the ongoing pandemic and a very demanding job. I was definitely not able to devote as much time to myself or my hobbies as I would have liked, and I am incredibly thankful to everyone who stuck around with me despite my rare posting and late reward mailings this year.

If we’re being h...

Holidays

Wishing everyone a cozy holiday season! Stay inside and stay safe.

Three layer print from traditional lino (black), rubber (blue), and laser cut acrylic (orange), with waterbased inks on 4x5 card. Design is based on the sleepytime tea bear, and the Khajiit is inspired by M'iaq's look in Morrowind.

Periods in Tamriel

Earlier this week, a user on r/teslore asked a question: do the humans and elves of Tamriel have the same menstrual cycle as those of Earth? She very quickly got buried in dismissive non-answers and deleted the thread. But not before I saw it, and had some thoughts.

Let's address the most common objection first: "There's no toilet-lore either."

But redditor, there is! Not a ton, maybe, but we do occasionally see buckets positioned in toilet-like fashion in the games, and E...

An Illustrated Guide to the Not-So-Humble Mudcrab

While most mudcabs are content to masquerade as rocks, some have adapted a more unusual camouflage.

(Plate 1) The colorful Coral Crabs of Alinor, for example, blends perfectly into the ancient coastal reefs of the region.

(Plate 2) The mudcrabs of Valenwood, meanwhile, have a symbiotic relationship with the eponymous woods of the province. Tiny trees grow in the rich river mud on the crabs' shells, using the crustacean's travels to spread their seeds.

The Demon of Knowledge

Oathman reward for this month, actually on time!

This one was a whole lot of mixed media layers, starting with cut up bits of old paperback, then green tinted gesso and sanding the whole thing. The blobs and tentacles part of the print was one sheet of rubber, and the extra eyeballs were carved from small separate sections of rubber that I had leftover. Each card has a unique auxiliary eyeball arrangement!

June/July prints are finally done!

The "purple" on the yellow paper turned into more of a blue-ish gray when it dried, but I'm still pretty happy with how these turned out.

They'll be sent out over the next week and I'll try to put up some in-progress shots at that time too.

Alternate Azuras

It turns out a whole lot of people marked Daedra as one of their favorite parts of Elder Scrolls, so I made another edition of the Azura print from a few years back for my anniversary giveaway. These are larger than the original, but are printed on cardstock rather than watercolor paper. They also don't have the gold emelishment that the Patron versions of this print did.

17th Anniversary Giveaway

Because I can't remember when exactly I started playing Morrowind, I consider the day that I joined Tamriel Rebuilt (June 8th, 2004) to be my official Elder Scrolls community anniversary. This year marks 17 years from that date, and after what we've been through the last 14+ months, I wanted to do something special for everyone. What I ended up settling on is a huge giveaway featuring prints, stickers, postcards, and various other things I've created for Patreon and elsewhere over the past ha...

Roundup: April & May 21 (+ Pride Month Keychains)

Let's peel back the sands of time and look back to a few things that have happened since I did the last roundup.

Your Definitive Guide to the Size of Tamriel

If you google for the size of Tamriel, you’ll find hundreds of results. Many of them will cite the same figure from the Pocket Guide to the Empire 1st Edition as the answer to your question:

“...the peak [of Red Mountain] can be seen from Almalexia, 250 miles to the south.

From there you draw a line on the map, then use that line to...

Custom Bookmarks

I felt bad for not making any new content this month, so I wanted to do a little something extra for you guys: customized bookmarks! Each is made of two layers of cardstock and has your name in Daedric. If you don't read physical books, tape em to your notebook or your wall to make it clear who they belong to, or slip them into the locker of your enemy/lover to let them know you know.

Mysterium Xarxes

Where April surprised me with its busyness, I fully expected May to be work-life balance disaster, and it somehow still managed to be worse. A few things in my personal life combined with a deadline at work to result in very little time (and even less energy) to do any hobby stuff. My apologies to all you guys, especially the new folks who joined at such an awkward time.

I've been so caught up in everything else that I actually missed April's Oathman reward, shown above. Between Oblivio...

Further experiments with Saint Olms

After the leather version of this bookmark design didn't work out, I wanted to try again in a different medium: veneer. Veneer is basically super thin wood. Walnut, in this case. I glued together two parts for added stability before cutting and engraving on the glowforge.

While I like of overall look of this, the engraved bits just need a little something extra. Maybe a dark oil wash to make them recede? Or a bright silver to make them stand out?

Telvanni Tower

I picked up a set of watercolor pencils recently (as I'd always wanted to experiment with the media, but only had a few individual pencils), and did this quick draw over of an ancient watercolor painting of a Telvanni tower. Drawn on a little handmade notebook of what I think is some sort of printmaking paper.

Roundup: March & April 21

April unexpectedly ended up being a month that's completely kicking my behind. Seemingly just yesterday I was posting the Glories and Laments print, and next thing you know, it's suddenly halfway through next month and I've not made a single update. I did post a few other things here and there, though, so I thought that the least I could do was do a little roundup of what you may have missed if you don't follow me elsewhere.

March

Since March was Oblivion's ...
