Against my better judgement, over the past two weeks I'd been working on a nude model of Overwatch's Zarya. She's almost finished, but has also given me a case of art-block. All week I've been telling myself to start drawing the next comic page, or ANYTHING, but couldn't.
Today, Aimee's helping me to break through the block. The fun thing about her, is having one arm and two different hair styles makes her interesting on both sides!

I was hoping to get some drawing done these few days, but Daisy's model has demanded my full attention. But the plus side to that is I've made quite a bit of progress on her face rig! It's still rough, but v0.2 of her rig is very close to being complete!
For v0.3, the current plan is to finish the rest of her face - rigging her brows, adding & rigging her teeth and tongue, ears, additional face-shapers, etc.
OR - I could swap v0.3 & v0.4, and start rigging her breasts...

I'd hoped to get some more drawing done this week, but so far my brain hasn't been cooperative. On the bright side, I've made progress towards the next version of Daisy's rig!
The major new feature for Daisy v0.2 might be her lips. The code to rig them was already in place, it just needed to be re-enabled, and the results hooked up to the rest of the rig. The next step will be to add skin weights, since it's difficult to tell how well the rig works just by look at the joints ...

So I thought I'd have today and tomorrow before I'd have anything more on this contract, but that ended up not being the case - while we're waiting for the next model, we're pressing ahead with its animations. This might be my first actual non-holiday weekend in the past month, so on one hand I'm trying to enjoy some time off, but on the other hand I want to make the most of it and get this Monique & Liz comic finished. Only one more panel to go, as I type this!
If all goes well, this contract will be wrapped up within the next couple of weeks - there's only one more character left to skin, and after that roughly a dozen animations for me to clean up and/or re-do.

I finally have an extended weekend off! Whether I can get anything drawn is the question, though...
My youngest niece's burthday is today, there's a big family get-together tomorrow (mainly my brother's in-laws, so I'm hoping to duck out), then on Monday I fly back home. Some progress on the next Monique & Lizzie page, to tide y'all over! It's doubtful that I'll have the rest of the page complete within the next week or so, so I may just upload the image packs & Illustrator files for last month, and then post this page separately whenever it's finished.

Today was a bit of a reprieve from yesterday's frustration. I've done all that I could to make the game character's skeleton fit the model, now we have to hope that we get a response tomorrow on whether we can fix the rig as well.

If you're unfamiliar with Theycallhimcake's Cassie, one of her quirks is that her head is not only detachable, but often gets swapped for that of her sentient bunny doll, Humphrey. So if I'm going to model Cassie and do her justice, Humphrey will need to be modeled as well! Since she's the much simpler of the two, it might even be fun to model Humphrey first...

As some of you may know, every so often I need to take a break or change directions, as far as my 3d work is concerned. In Daisy's case, I can only spend so many months in a row working on but not finishing her. Last year I spent a couple of months modifying some WoW models, and that at least allowed to test and improve my rigging tools.

Whether I like it or not, this week is shaping up to be technical-oriented. Over the past few days I've had to update my character rigging script to support the skeleton I'd been given, in case the client didn't also provide the rig. Today they finally provided the rig, so now I need to get familiar with it and its tools, and figure out the best workflow for re-using it with our models.
...on the bright side, that skeleton helped to identify some bugs in my script that I didn't eve...

...my brain hurts, but at least another script is working - the 'sticky lips' script I'd started earlier this month. But while it works in a simple test scene, I haven't had a chance to test it on Daisy yet, as that will require a few more pieces. For now, I think it's best to make a note of what's needed, and take a break.

Today I tested out my lips function, and more of ngSkinTools' features. So far I'm loving ngSkinTools, although I've kept things fairly easy...
To test out the lips' deformation, I first created a new layer. That's the first thing to love about ngSkinTools - its layers work much like Photoshop's, allowing artists to edit skin weights non-destructively. Daisy's face rig is going to use multiple layers - most of the bones that drive her face will be attached to ribbons, and the controls for the ribbons will be attached to a low-polygon 'mask', which can then be driven by a few bones and/or morphs. The mask is just a copy of Daisy's face with a lot of detail removed.
