I wanted to give you all an update on how Zoom is doing with his new human mom, Laurie! Laurie's is a freeflight student of ours who graduated our course with her green wing macaw, Jewels but always wanted a blue throated macaw. I adopted Zoom out to her and she has been working with him ever since.
For those that remember, Zoom had funky feet. They are short, fat and stocky and many times his back toes go in front as though he has little control of them. The vet said it looks to be a ...

Thought I’d share this cute video of these two showering today. Zip is definitely more into Jinx than he is to her, she’s always trying to get close to him and he’s always moving away but he’s sooo tolerant of her and I think it’s helping her so much to have him around her to show her there’s nothing scary about our daily tasks. These two together sure makes my heart happy. 🩵

If you missed part one of my project bird update, go watch it here to get caught up!
Here are all the details about Marabou (Boo for short) the cockatoo that was offered to me as a project bird, and why I decided not to take her even though this is one of my dream species to work hands on with as a project bird.
PS - I left you on kind of a cliff hanger there, any guesses on what m...

This is an update video from Ava's first flight trip with Claude as her mom back in January. This trip was in California and so it was much easier for Claude to attend being in her state. At this time, Claude was doing a ton of dietary changes to prep Ava for surgery which included absolutely no nuts or seeds in her diet and bringing her weight up. This was instructions from her vet specific for this type of surgery and therefore Claude had a very hard time motivating Ava to work for pellets ...

In today's BTT trick training edition I thought it would be good to show you how I often go back and clean up previously trained behaviors. Really ensuring the bird understands the cue for each one.

Alright, last month Tony asked us how long does it take us to pack for a month-long freeflight trip? And that's a loaded question so I decided to document our packing process as much as I could. With Capri's birthday celebrations (we celebrated before we left with her friends) AND Easter weekend, it was a lot of start and stopping... but here's the general idea.
Hint: The huge stainless cage is for my next project bird...

This month we are spending the entire month away from home, and so I am unable to make anymore progression on the cookbook revamp project we've had going on. However, I am very hopeful to finish the photo side of things in May and video a lot of it for you guys at that point.

In today's video I am sharing how I taught Primrose our parrotlet to flip around on our finger. This is best trained using luring and then phasing out the lure. Remember, you can simply train your bird to hang upside down in a bat-like position or take it all the way around as a flip. The training is the same, other than stopping earlier for the bat and extending the duration for it. I will be sharing a video on the bat next month with my sun conures!

I love my conditioning aviary so much I just want to use it ALL. THE. TIME!
I think it's important to acknowledge that your birds aren't going to always want to train when you do. Sometimes, they just don't and that's okay. I like working with multiple birds for that reason - it gives me a different bird to focus on when one doesn't really wanna join in.
