Parrot Handling: Flying to the HAND Instead of ARM

If you saw the last video I made for Pepper's owners, it was all about proper handling of getting a bird to transition to using your arm or wrist to stand on to stepping up onto your hand. In this video, I was trying to show them that it's all about how you offer yourself to the bird so that transitioning from a bird landing on your arm to your hand would be seamless.

When consulting with clients, I often times like to show them what it looks like through demos with my own birds a...

Parrot Handling: Transition From Wrist/Arm to HAND

Many bird owners struggle with proper handling skills with their birds. Many birds are conditioned only to go to a person's arm or at most, their wrist. This makes moving them around, getting them in and out of a cage or on and off a perch really difficult because shoulder rushing becomes a real thing.

I've been consulting with some clients who are struggling with this very thing. Their older blue and gold macaw Pepper will only go to the husband's wrist but prefers the arm. And a...

Concussion Update + Answer to Your Question

Hey patrons!

I got this question on a recent video post and wanted to share the answer in video form because typing REALLLLY hurts my head at the moment and screen time is a major trigger so filming is actually easier (aside from some general headache/train of thought stuff going on).

I hope you find value in this video and stay tuned for the end of the month when our Q&A video will be coming out with both Dave and myself. I am hoping in March I will be feeling better en...

Working with Zip and Jinx in my Studio

I thought I'd share a little training session with Zip and Jinx in the studio. Since I am housing them in the quarantine aviaries away from the rest of the flock, it's convenient for me to work with them here in the studio vs always taking them up to the house. I can't believe how compatible they've become!

BTT (Extra) Flying to a Stand/Perch

In today's video I am showing how to teach your bird to fly to a t-stand or perch. This comes in handy when you are a solo trainer needing to keep the training moving along without having to walk back long distances. I originally thought this could be a BTT episode, and it will be kind of, but as an extra really since I wanted to share it earlier than I would schedule a BTT out.

My biggest tip for this is that you use an incredibly steady t-stand like ours. Something that won't sp...

Monet used to be afraid of our bird backpack...

Do you guys remember when I was using Olivia's backpack to move Monet around on tour and we STRUGGLED soooo hard with it in hotels?

Well, Monet has come a long way since then and is now using our trackpack and I couldn't be more excited since we had always had a trackpack for her with her own name tag and everything... and now we are finally using it. Hooray!

BTT - Trick Training - Into My Hand!

Here is another episode of our BirdTricks Tuesday series on Trick Training! This trick is for SMALL BIRDS to teach them how to go into your hand. You can also shape this into having your bird allow touch as well. I HIGHLY recommend you teach the following behaviors before attempting this one:

  • Step Up
  • Go through a hoop
  • Go through a tunnel
  • Wave or Shake

Sooo... I got a concussion...

Hey patrons,

Wow, I am so sorry about the lack of follow through last month. I took Capri up skiing two Thursdays ago and it was insanely windy conditions. She goes every Thursday as part of her school program for PE which is really cool but this season has been a terrible snow season for us with below freezing temps (-50 on the mountain with windchill on a stretch there) and its been real hit or miss (mostly miss) up there.

I had no idea such insanely windy conditions...

So. Frustrating. Sometimes.

I'm obsessed with my new conditioning aviary but man, sometimes the emotional rollercoaster of trying to accomplish something this big between two birds is just... draining and confusing and frustrating and hard... I know it'll be worth it but I wish I could just explain what I'm up to to Jinx sometimes.

Lily Learns to Wave

This month I decided to train my 12 year old sun conure Lily to wave! Something I'd never taught her and it's one of my favorite tricks to train because it can be so tricky to teach the smaller the bird you are working with.

If you are searching for more content on how to teach this trick that may not be included in this particular video, check out some of these other videos where I taught this trick to different birds that might offer different perspectives that apply more to you...

A Monet Update (that I kinda forgot to share...)

Well... just came across all this from a while back when Capri took care of Monet at my folks' house while we were on a trip. At this time, Capri was still really intimidated by Monet and didn't believe she could get her back into her cage easily so she was always scared to let her out. I decided even though this was dated footage that I'd share it because I had intended to way back when all of this was taking place. Monet is such a different bird in our home now! She eagerly goes in and out ...
