Art by Fraylim: Red Dress

I'll admit to cheating a little with this one. This lovely piece of art by Fraylim was posted sometime ago, also lost when I reset the tiers to come subscribers. I held back on reposting it. Initially an image wanting for a scene, it's become relevant to the current chapter. That chapter draft should be ready to drop tomorrow, but for now here's a peek at the relevent text:

A good week for writing, with another chapter pushed out the door. The two most recent chapters are listed as 'draft' because they haven't quite settled yet. A mini "Jonas arc" of three chapters has emerged in book 5, and once the whole arc is written I'll be able to make a final pass and tidy it up, make sure everything's where I want it to be.

On Monday, I finished reading Sally Rooney's Intermezzo<...

Art by Fraylim: Cindy Wrapped Up

A lovely piece of art commissioned from Fraylim by a patron: a variation on Cindy from a scene in Book 6. The relevant text from the story below:

"And it’s just under twenty minutes later that I’m nearly ready for him, jittery and kneeling on the floor by the small Christmas tree we assembled earlier that day. Lipstick very bright and very red. Otherwise, I’m naked except for a pair of cherry red stilettos and matching stay-up stockings, decorated with a little white bow. Also, a ...

It feels good to finally be hiting some bigger numbers with the word count, regaining a sense of genuine progress. This week, it's felt as though the writing has gotten easier again. Or maybe the subject of the current chapter is just a little easier. In any case, the next chapter should be ready by next week, and we seem to be back to a chapter-a-week for the first time since Easter.

Book 5, Chapter 6: You Don't Have To (First Draft)

With absolute predictability, this chapter's grown larger than originally planned. There's more, but at 7k words already, this seemed a good place to cut it off, and post. I may later merge the next chapter and this one back together, or keep them split; but for now, enjoy!

As always, comments and feedback appreciated.

Achievment Unlocked: 100k Redux

Seems as good a time as any to recycle the celebration-Cindy pic: hit the 100K-word mark for the year yesterday!

Those words were spread across:

--> Book 6 of Constant,

--> Who Made the Lamb: chapters 1-4,

--> chapters 4 and 5, and 6 (in progress) of Book 5 of Constant.

So not bad. Although to be honest, I'm a little disappointed. A glance at my spreadsheet shows that I hit this milestone on June 3rd last year, so I'm trailing by a little. Which is a bit...

I found a bunch of Fraylim's art that patrons may have lost access to when I set up the new tiers, so that shoud be fixed, now. Okay, I wrote a lot more than 116 words this week. But along with the writing, there was a lot of editing, and trimming away unsuccessful earlier attempts. So, probably about five thousand of new content, and nearly as much in deleted old content.

Either way, I thought I'd have the next chapter ready to post in its final draft this week, but it hasn't quite worked out that way. This current chapter is proving a little more difficult than anc...

Until a few weeks ago, I had a massive lead over last year's word count. I was very pleased with that, but sadly that gap's now shrunken to only a few thousand words. Since Easter, I've struggled to get back into the flow of things. This is the first week I've properly hit my stride again, or at least my thousand-a-day.

Still. Last week I pushed out the rewrite of the encounter with Darius, and I think th...

Constant: Book 5, Chapter 5 (Draft)

Here you go, the first draft of Book 5, Chapter 5. This is very much a draft in progress - I expect it to expand by a couple thousand more words before its done, and individual bits are still sort of floating around without having quite settled in their properl place. Finding the right organic flow to the dialogue, interspersed with relevant flashbacks, is proving challenging - a fun challenge, but difficult to get right. Also, the 'voice' of the chapter is a bit weird - this is end of book ...

Last time I last saw Darius? Five years ago.

It’s not like we had, you know, regular family reunions or anything. Sakura’s children, we went our separate ways and got on with our lives. Those of us who made it out, that is. So, meeting the guy was fucking unusual. The request came out of nowhere, an e-mail one morning from an account I didn’t recognize. That was...

Art by Fraylim: Housewife v2

The ever wonderful Fraylim created a second version of the red polka-dot vintage-inspired dress, as a sort of gift/commission for a reader who requested it. That reader has very kindly shared it with me, for publishing on the Patreon. I think it's one of Fraylim's best to date--my own cheeky tweak request was for seams up the back of the stockings!

(Sneak Peek) Constant: Book 5, Chapter 4

Though the writing's not quite back to my usual pace, it's still ticking along, just slower than I'd like. Unexpected RL workplace demands, now dealt with. Also, minor revisions and improvements to previous chapters continue.

I wouldn't quite say this is fully settled yet and ready to go out, but it's been far too long since I've posted anything actually new related to Constant. I thought I should put something out there before people started to wonder if I'd disappeared again.

Art by Fraylim: Red "Homemaker" Dress

A reader recently asked if there was any artwork of Cindy in her "homemaker" dress, the vintage-inspired, red with white polka dots dress worn when first cleaning the apartment in Book 4, and again at Mr Connor's home in Book 6.

There wasn't. But now, there is!

Please enjoy! And if you like it, why not let Fraylim know?

A short one, this week.

It's been a busy week. Sadly, most of that's been RL work-busy, with way too many long work days and little downtime for writing. Fortunately, that's over with now - back to normal next week, I think.

Consequently, writing hasn't quite been where I want it to be recently, and I haven't hit my 1k/day target in far too long. Well, until yesterday, when suddenly it all kind of opened up again and started to flow once more. I think it really was a matt...

Word count is cumulative for the past two weeks. This is in part due to real-life work, which dumped a couple of unpleasant twelve-hour days on me (with a few more on the horizon). Though disappointingly below the usual writing target, it's actually been a fairly productive pair of weeks. I polished off and posted Who Made the Lamb, and it's landed fairly well, receiving some very encouraging feedback (and criticism, too). I tackled th...

And here's a selection of book covers I've put together in anticipation of creating the ePubs for the series. What do you think? They're really just a showcase for Fraylim's fantastic art, but I've tried to pick images at least somewhat relevant to what's happening in that specific book, while also hinting at the ongoing feminisation narrative arc.

Constant in All Other Things: Two Series Covers

Had a little time to mess around with Canva today, and mocked up two series covers. I think I'm leaning towards the 'femme fatale' one, but I've got a soft spot for the David and Cindy side-by-side one, it's one of the first images Fraylim gifted me.

Which is your preference?

Femme Fatale?

David and Cindy?

(I'd set up a poll, but Patreon doesn't seem to allow both a poll -and- an image. Unless I'm being a bit thick, which is entirely possible.)

Writing Update: 21-04-25 and coming changes

Hey, happy Easter monday, everyone!

So, last week I -did- enjoy some time off of work, which gave me a much needed chance to catch up on sleep. However, I more or less failed in my plan to take a holiday from writing/this Patreon.

Instead, I revised and posted Who Made the Lamb to the usual sites, where it landed with varying success. Some interesting feedback over on FM (the first two reviews accuse my story of being too political), and some really lovely and considerate...

Who Made the Lamb, Chapter 3

Yes, I'm on holiday, but turns out one of the things I enjoy doing during my downtime is writing. I recently posted Lamb to the usual sites - nicely positive feedback on SH, and some 'political' (?) pushback on FM; nothing on TGS. I'll be keeping that momentum going, but want to post new content here, first, obviously. I've reorganised the story into easier-to-digest chapters. The break works for Chapter 1 and 2, I think. The week started strong, then sort of fell of a cliff for various reasons and I fell short of my weekly target. I checked myself against last year's progress, and was surprised to find I'm about 14,000 words up on last year, which is reassuring.
