Teenage Lee

There's little to be done about youthifying a character who inherently looks young. This is Lee in her mid-to-late teens, really not that long ago in the grand scheme of things. It didn't take long for her to reach her full height. She's perfectly at ease with her stature for several reasons, but she wouldn't pass up the opportunity to be tall for a day if she could.

June Update

Howdy y'all. 

It's the dead of winter where I am and the cold has done little to convince me to go outside. Luckily that means more time for drawing! Here's a brief summary of my upcoming projects.

In the short term you may have noticed a running theme with my RH comics. Lee is a villain now for some reason. There are a few more comics in this arc, the first of which I'll post here shortly. 

After that, I'll be leaning into a more story-driven arc that will, horror...

Roundhouse: Riskwatch Manager Concepts

Some bonus artworks of what I plan to be a recurring character in the Roundhouse mythos, if that's not too presumptive a term. I drew him young in one of them to stretch my artistic limbs a bit but I think he just turned out to look like the guy from No Country for Old Men. I'm forever surprising myself.

Young Valeria

A quick glimpse into Valeria's past. She didn't have the best childhood. But then you only have to spend a few minutes with her to reach that conclusion.

Hey guys. I'll be putting out the next bit of romantic Valeria/Rangi content this month, but I thought you'd like to have a say in what that content will involve. I'll throw a few options down below. If you have anything specific you really want to see, comments are welcome.

Original Lee Sketches

These were the first ever pictures of Lee I had done. A few hours prior I had written out a rough story plan about a superhero living in a no-villains universe. I had planned for it to be a guy initially but I changed my mind the second I put pencil to paper. She hasn't changed a huge amount since I first drew her, but change she did. Hope you enjoy this  insight into the origins of this silly little project of mine.

More Basil Concepts

This guy went through a lot of changes over time. He sort of went from skinny to not as skinny to skinny again. If there's anything I've learnt about character design, it's making sure the silhouette is distinctive and memorable. You may have noticed the owl on his shoulder. I was going for that Angry Birds shape because I don't know, I thought it would be funny. I ditched it eventually, it wasn't vibing with my creative vision, so to speak. 

May Update

Hi team. I want to start off by saying how much I appreciate your support and like, just you as a person, I mean you're so cool and funny and good at handshakes. So strong, so empowered.

Anyway, I'm about to post some new stuff again so that's cool. Here's the gist.

I've got a couple of new RH shorts coming out soon, which I'll post here first, along with the usual concept stuff. As for the DMC tier, there'll be some new content this month as well, but I'll be posting a poll today...

Concept: Riskwatch Manager

Now here's a real proper bit of Roundhouse secrecy. This guy is named General Trapper and he's the acting manager for the Auckland branch of Riskwatch. I don't want to give away too much about him yet, but as we're finally getting some plot progression I think I'm pretty comfortable showing off his concept artwork. If all goes to plan you'll get to see him in the next Edward story arc.

Concept: Wingman Jones and Professor Epitaph

These kooky characters were Lee's inspiration for becoming a hero. The show they appear on is an old 1960's cartoon featuring a bumbling evil wizard and his bird-themed nemesis. I've always been into the old Roadrunner and Coyote style of comedy and in future Roundhouse stories, these characters will have their own brief play-within-a-play segments in the story.

March Update

Hi folks, just a minor announcement regarding the HELPING HAND tier.

Concept: Freddy's Brother

Here's another character sitting in the cognitive sin bin, waiting for his moment to shine. Kurt is Freddy's brother, and I initially wrote him as little more than a plot device to justify a story where the gang attend a beach party. 

He did end up serving more of a purpose than I intended, not least of which was his primary character trait, which was to be so much more upbeat than his sister that it was just annoying. 

X-Ray Vision

Did you know Lee was once going to have x-ray vision like what Superman has? Well, of course not, it's one of many closely guarded secrets I keep about her. I came up with a few scenarios and gags around the premise, in this redrawn example she's looking for something she lost in the laundry. 

I decided against giving her this power in the end, as all the jokes seemed to revolve around accidentally seeing other people naked, and that's really the kind of thing you'd only find in a ...

Tara (Devil May Care)

Another bit of painting practice. I did a more conventional pic of this lady earlier in the Patreon feed, but I fancied another go at this style, which is definitely in its infancy. 

If you missed the last one, Tara is a future character in Devil May Care. 

Ted Ahead (Process GIF)

I'm doing a proper Roundhouse episode! It's four pages long, already finished the first one, and it's full of story development. Featuring the return of Ted the dead (emotionally).

A Slightly Better Update

Hi guys.

It's been a bit of a weird one. A lot's changed for me recently, not least a shift to a new city and a reset on life in general.

Good news is that reset has given me the time to get my act together a bit so I can start providing content for you good people again. I have a few posts coming shortly, and some comics in the works on all my other channels.

Valeria and Rangi's Final Designs

I say final design, but I did end up cutting out a few details, the runes on Valeria's shirt for example. I eventually decided that black eyes would undercut Rangi's good vibes too much, but that doesn't mean any other devil couldn't have them, wink-wink nudge-nudge tease-tease.

Valeria in Portrait

Still practicing this style, trying to do as many pictures like this as I can but the harsh reality is that these still take 5-6 hours to make. The contemporaries I'm learning from are able to do much better pictures in much less time, but if and when I can match their pace, I'll let you know. 

Criminal Concepts #2

More baddies to go in my character design barrel for potential future use. I was detecting an underrepresentation of women in my criminal line-ups and Roundhouse is an equal opportunities comic, so I'm going to include more where I can. Yay?

That's right baby, there are others. These ladies are diametrically opposed co-workers of Rangi and Valeria, the one on the right (as yet unnamed) being Valeria's best friend. At least in her mind. Valeria doesn't care for her. At all.

Roundhouse Pilot pg. 10/10

Welp, there you have it. That's right, I ended it on a cliffhanger, aren't I a stinker.

As an extra treat, I'll also post this exact pilot (in another PDF) but drawn several years prior to this one. Sort of a fun time if you like comparing people's work to their old attempts.

Roundhouse: Sidekick

Yet another character who fell by the wayside, Anna Eve Manna. This tyke is a reformed thief, armed with gadgets and kung fu fighting. Originally an enemy of Lee, she eventually became part of the family and joined Lee's casual crusade against bad people. Her design was recycled somewhat into Sparrowhead's current look.
