Trying Something New

I had a flash of inspiration today and spent a surprising amount of time on something quite different from my normal efforts.

One of those shoots...

I try to work with the client's ideas but when they ask for something like <that other shoot I thought was a complete failure> I'm sort of at a loss.  I can't tell if it's working or not because I thought it was a total screwup the first time.  Everything on the back of the camera looks terrible, so I guess we're succeeding?

Sad Photographer

Yesterday while looking for a photo (of a duck in a hat, of all things) I found a bunch of photos of a girl I worked with a lot several years ago.  She was an acrobat and contortionist, very fit, very flexible, and we'd shot a lot of nudes.  I haven't worked with her for maybe 4 years, haven't talked to her in at least that long.

Today, out of the blue, she contacts me and asks me to delete all her photos from my website and social media (She'd done me the courtesy of finding ...

Many Photos Incoming

Things are still slow here, it's unbelievable.  I had only two shoots in April, so I've just got nothing to show you.  This month isn't a heap better so far, today's big shoot at an aerials studio was canceled a few days ago because no one was booking photos.  Everyone I talk to, everywhere, is uninterested in the expense right now.  It seems to be the case in every industry too, it's just slow.

Photo Fails

I was out biking today, and this guy was doing this large drop.

I grabbed my rarely used backup backup camera, and it was configured all wrong.  Fuck knows what I was doing with it last!  And I think buttons got bumped while it was rattling around on the floor of the car.

Playing with New Ideas

Here's something I don't normally share.  This is a work in progress, a trial run of sorts, trying new ideas to see if they'd pan out or not.

In this case, I'd downloaded a trial software package and it was about 80% cool new tools and 64% frustrating, weird behaviour, as if it was written by gnomes who'd never used another art package before.

Anyway, it gives me wild new controls for brush handling etc.  I hope to turn this into more colourful, fanciful images, but I'm ...

OK, you all voted fairly strongly in favour of an editiing video so I'm going to make one.  Tomorrow I'll start working out the details - mostly I'll be cleaning off my desk so I look like 10% less of a filthy madman hunched over a keyboard...

This year continues to be rubbish photographically.  I can't get paid shoots and I can't get people to do free ones.  The start of the year is always bad but this is unreal.  Both my shoots for this weekend canceled.

Rope with Melanie

This was a spectacularly rewarding shoot.  Melanie's awesome, my rope was pretty decent, the lighting worked...  It all came together and this might be my best rope shoot yet.

January Progress Report

Well January has totally sucked.  Only three paying shoots all month, one for city council and two people in the studio.  A few Pantheon shoots, which you will get to see next week (Augh, next week!) and there was that Hannah shoot, which I hope you enjoyed.

I hate these slow months, it's a massive blow to the psyche and I start looking for barista jobs.  And I can't make a good coffee, so it's really just bad all around.

Thanks for all your support last year, it means a lot to me.  But...  I feel bad (because I'm an artist and everything I do is either total shit, or awesome, or both, or it alternates) because I don't know if you're getting what you came here for.  And that eats at me a little bit.

Update!

OK, so November was pretty slow as far as releases go.  I was out of the country for half of the month, visiting family overseas, plus another small trip where my wife broke her ankle so a surprising amount of my time is taken up helping her function...
