Very often we shoot images in addition to the plan. when you have in mind 12 but end up taking a change to work more looks or sets or moods, having extra options when you need to select to be published.
I remember 2 things vividly from that day: my feeling when i opened the door and saw her face for the first time (so impressive in person) and how the weather didn't help. literally raining every 5min, intense showers for a couple minutes, then sun, then rain again... we...

This will be kind of unsual to share. basically because it doesn't happen often. literally 2 times that i can remember in the last 13 years. When the energy between the model and the photographer is not working.
For me, photography is all about the connection with the subject. more than about physical attributes, beauty, experience or proportions. it's all about getting to know someone and making sure the images you create only exist because you two meet.
in this case,...

as a photographer I never really enjoyed shooting backlit. I am much more someone who places the model on direct sunlight, full blast to the face, but there is an undeniable mood that comes from having light coming only from behind... much more intimate and personal. Working with her on this set, since what we wanted was for intentionally moody... i didnt have a choice. same images if she would have been positioned with direct sunlight to her would have had a totally different vibe.

This probably is a good way to show how I work and how we keep things moving and intense to get the frames we want.
Using someone in this case to block a bit of the hard light in Capetown, not really for the image, but to help the model to have her eyes open as she was nearly blinded with those deep blue eyes.
long video showing the real deal behind the camera for the images just shared. <3

Sharing this set not only because i honestly think images are wonderful... but to explain what the Behind the scenes video shows we captured.
South africa, noon, extremely hot and direct sunlight that were calling for the orange tones used when editing.

I remember this as a very very challenging session. Not because of her, absolutely not... but because light conditions were awful all day long. The apartment we had for the editorial was fantastic to stay... big windows downtown Chicago, but made the whole room be backlit, tricking the camera into making everything soooo dark i shot nearly blind all the time. even if it looks spatious it was soooo small, i had to shoot most of the time climbing furniture, from inside of another room or holdin...

It's always challenging when going to a location (apartment/studio this time) and you realize there is no light available. pushing the camera limits with very high ISO and making "darkness and shadows" the conductor for the vibe, we had about 1h together to create this unseen editorial.

Becoming super quick one of my top 5 models since i started. her understanding of body work and movement is so so unique...

Some models work pose after pose after pose and, to be honest, that feels too robotic and fake to me. I much rather have flowing movements in a way that muscles are never relaxed and we don't lose the energy of the moment.
Of course working with someone like Mia with a dancing and yoga background... makes life super easy. Images from this set on Mia's post right here!

shooting in the middle of the desert is exhausting, challenging and handling the 40+ degrees creates a kind of a weird energy... but when you have someone like Jana in front it really makes it all worth it.

very often becomes really difficult to choose the final frame when the model is this gorgeous.
here 2 pics not selected from the time we spent shooting that set for the denim pants campaign we had together.

even if i fancy black and white, there is something about readhead models you can only capture in color...

I have been shooting "through glass" for years, but this time wanted to remove the whole reflection game and covering with shadows to have a cleaner, simpler image based more on movement and emotion than camera skills..

and this is part 2 of the sets created with her.
Again no reflectors or looking for shade... 3pm sun blasting on her and keeping it suuuper short and intense as always. the whole set is 1.5min as i really do not believe models can keep 100% passion if they work for more than that.

the other day i posted a little preview of the work done with her. There we go with a BTS video and the images taken... as you can see, moving quite a lot around her, no reflectors, no modifiers, not really more that constant "pressure" on the model so she doesn't get a second disconnected from what we did.
Since this was a strong look and she has a natural fierce presence... i had playing a very soft emotional spanish song to try to tone down the sexy-side and keep her...

I spent 4 days with her creating images... here part 1 and soon a major update with part 2.
While working on the next post I wanted to share this 2 outtakes from a studio session with Kat <3

hi! I was involved into a massive shooting a couple days ago. basically a dozen models and only 4h to shoot into a villa near Barcelona.
That meant i had to do slots of around 12-15min per model to get things ready and move on.
Here a preview of the images created with her... to show what can happen if the energy is right and you have your ideas already in your mind.

One of our Patreons (AMD, thanks!) suggested that i'd record a bit longer video of how things are done. well, this is the uncut behind the scenes of the images you can see attached, unedited. from the moment i put water on the top to the moment we finish.
2m35s of getting things ready, shooting without giving her a moment to distract and done. All my sets are shot in this style... quick, intense and let's move to the next.
now i will select 3 or 4 frames from it and get to...
Inside note: whenever I will shoot in water (pool, sun) I try to plan the shoot at noon so I have the hardest light possible... feeling bad for the models but results are epic.
