Experiment (four more panels)

I've started thinking of these images as being similar, in a way, to how key poses work in animation. Working pose-to-pose is, I assume, still traditional in CGI (I actually don't know much about CGI, no shock, it involves technology), in case anyone out there isn't an animation nerd, a key animator will basically plot out the extreme poses or movements to map out acting or motion high points in a sequence. Then an in-between animator connects the dots and provides the flow between the key po...

Bill and Ted Are Doomed #2 cover inks.

Back asap. Ridiculous, unproductive week behind me, hopefully I'll be able to catch up a bit this week. One last Bill and Ted script in the works, going to miss the characters all over again.

Experiment (first six panels)

I've been drawing on index cards for a while now, as folks who follow me on social media are well aware (which is...most, if not all of you out there?). I started buying index cards to use for story and page breakdowns for comic scripts, and like most artists who have blank paper in front of them, I started doodling on them when I got bored or was on the phone or waiting for something to upload or scan. It became a bit of a habit, and a quick,  no-frills way of communicating to my follow...

Bill And Ted Are Doomed #1: Cover Process

As production started on the new series, editor Daniel Chabon asked me to get the first two cover sketches going before working on the first script.

I was feeling pretty excited and anxious so I decided to limit my choices and keep things simple. To that end I decided I'd rough some ideas out on the 3" x 5" index cards I like to sketch on. I did both layouts really quickly on two cards, and I liked them, and was happy that they were both quickly approved up the chain so I could st...

M&C Commission: Colored With Colors

Welcome new backers. Thanks very much for being here!

Just FYI, I have an extremely busy week or two ahead, two late deadlines, prepping art sales (and some collectibles we're shedding), a few business meetings (!), some interviews to promote stuff, pushing the commissions forward while we scramble for a solution to our the car situation (we're now officially car-less, and I wish I could care less, arf arf arf).

I'm going to try to stay in touch here as much as possible whil...

Bill And Ted Are Doomed

Well, this caught me by surprise. I woke up very late to find that Dark Horse Comics had announced the secret project I've been hinting at here. I thought they were announcing Wednesday, then figured it would happen next week.

Anyway, so, here's the deal: I'm writing a four-issue Bill and Ted comic with art by the amazing Roger Langridge. Sarah Dyer and I are doing all four main covers, Roger's doing the first variant, we have art in for the next two variant covers by some excelle...

M&C Commission Inks: Let The Madness Begin

Got this Milk & Cheese commission inked late last night -- actually, early yesterday morning -- right? Wednesday..? No, Thursday morning, it's now Friday as I type this confusing sentence. I think it's Friday. TGIF. Thank Godzilla it's Friday. Wheee.

After I get some script work done I am going to sit with this and get the markers out and color it while I listen to people play Call of Cthulhu or an M.R. James podcast or something on WFMU. Coloring is kind of relaxing, but I hav...

Something In The Oven

Been busy dealing with things that hopefully will someday lead to other things, meetings and putting-things-together kind of things. As well as actually working on some things. Lots of things going on lately. Some of them may even happen.

If all goes well, one of these things will be announced next week. Which would be really nice, because I'm dying to talk about it.  And then I can finally show some process stuff here from the project. Which I need to work on as soon as I post thi...

Tyrone's Inferno (aka, How To Self-Destruct A Career)

I don't think I've ever posted the above drawings, which are the main character designs for Tyrone's Inferno, a pilot I had all-but sold to the Adult Swim after we made Welcome to Eltingville.

Some of you might remember some mention about Tyrone's Inferno back in the day, most of you will recognize some of the characters, since the show was initially built around the supporting cast from the Eltingville pilot. The pilot development came about because I had sent an e-mail to Keith Croffo...

House of Fun Update (6/6/2020)

Playing a lot of catch-up these last few days. On a lot of e-mail, bookkeeping, phone meetings, therapy, cleaning the studio (not that it looks much different!), another day of not getting out of bed when the idiot shit got too bad in my head.

I also took the deathmobile out to pick up my prescriptions and mail some packages out. Between the lack of power steering and the tightly packed, poorly-designed parking lot I side-swiped a parked car when I tried to leave. Thankfully it didn't l...

DC Nation Metal Men Pitch (w/links to aired episodes)

Once upon a time Sarah and I found ourselves working on back-to-back show developments for WB animation, first, on a Kamandi project aimed at the Adult Swim, and then on a series based on characters and concepts by Bruce Timm. For both projects we provided detailed pitch bibles, which consisted of character rundowns, a breakdown of the world and important settings, a series of episode outlines, visual and thematic approaches, and a throughline of where the series would head if it actually...

I'm My Own Luddite Comic Book Pirate Site

So, I wanted to send the Peanuts/Cthulhu Mythos story I worked on to a friend in the U.K., but I was never sent any files of the finished pages to go over due to the tight schedule. And the format/shape of the book made it impossible for me to scan the pages without breaking the spine of my personal copy. So, I took photos of all the pages on my camera and sent them.

And now you can read the story in a manner akin to watching a movie on a video taken in a theater. It's awkward, bu...

Update (5-27-20)

Hello, hello, hello.

Thanks to those of you who also follow me on Twitter and were able to check in while we were testing the webcam and the livestreaming process. We had some buffering and connection issues (I guess those are pretty much the same thing?), but nothing too horrific. We'll have to see what we can do with our situation, logistics and means to maybe try to improve the operation. I asked Sarah about an ether cable (thanks, Roger) but the house is set up so I'd have to ...

Steadily Rolling Backwards Downhill Fast

That's how today's shaping up work-wise, bleagh.

Last week I really pushed on a script and it finally got finished up Friday night, and then I pretty much slept through Saturday. We set up the webcam and tried testing it again and things just aren't happening with the connection or whatever the hell's going on. So,my plans for doing some sketching and signing for a first webcam/livestream/whatever it's called. Sarah thinks we might have to hook it up to my desktop computer, but wh...

Old Godzilla Con Sketch, With Essay

This was based on an issue of the Herb Trimpe-drawn Marvel Comics series. Don't ask me which one. I think I called the bad guy the "Evil Pancake Monster" while working on the sketch. I remember having a fun conversation with the person who commissioned this, about how bonkers the monster was -- as well as the comic. As far as I could remember, I had never actually seen the insides of a Godzilla comic before looking through the one he gave me for reference. It all seemed so strange, so wrong -...

Thank You, New Patrons! Welcome to A House of Fun Update

We've had a number of new backers in the past couple of weeks and I just wanted to say thanks for joining us here. And thanks to everyone who has stayed for the bumpy ride these past few months.

A few things that are going on here -

Out of the blue, comp copies of BLACKWOOD: THE MOURNING AFTER #3 showed up on the doorstep yesterday. I checked in with editor Daniel Chabon, and while there's some books shipping out slowly from Diamond starting May 20th, Blackwood #3 doesn't have a s...

I Got Some Uzumaki On My Doctor Octopus

I wasn't planning on doing the gray color pencil spirals, but it got started while I was putting some background fill in and I liked what was happening and went with it.

Third in a series of Marvel schmucks (and this pin-up has been spoken for). As I mentioned when I posted the WIP on this, I despise Otto Octavius. As a kid I had a visceral dislike of him, if he appeared in an issue I wanted him gone. He wasn't fun, he was garbage. He stirred up so much shit, and was such a petty ...

Index Card Art

I've started scanning the index cards that will be sent out to the lucky few.  I'll generate the random numbers for these New Wrong Spider-Man doodles tonight. I think I'm going to scan all of these index card drawings (which I tend to do when I can't sleep and usually post to Instagram). It's some stack right now, and it might make for a nice PDF here.

Sorry I'm behind on Patreon plans. I've been in the fortunate position to still have work in the moribund comics industry, I...

What's Currently On My Board (And What's For Sale)

Here's what's on the board these days while I trudge merrily on:

1) Milk & Cheese commission - overdue, but over-detailed. The lettering was a sticking point but I finally got it done last night and it was a hand wringer. The problem with my lettering is that I don't know how to letter. I draw the letters more than I "letter" them, if you follow. I don't have a facility with pen nibs to pick up a broad nib and lay down thick block lettering, and I am not great with a thick brush pen...

16 1/2" x 22 1/2", Tombow brush pen, G-nib pen, Hunt 102, rapidograph, Pentel correction pen, Uni-ball Signo white pen, OCD, too many comics, too many hours.

It's too big for our scanner, so I'm hoping one day Sarah can stitch it into one image file when time allows. If and when, I plan to upload it as one of the prints for backers at that level.

I have to get on track with the PDF's and prints, I apologize. I don't have the knowledge to set those up, and Sarah is pretty ove...
