Dev Journal: Two's Company

Bit of an interesting mixture of news for this one. In my last dev journal, I mentioned I was working on tooltips, and those have come together well at this point I think. I'm hoping they'll serve as solid continuous educational tools for players, and still blend into the background when they're not needed anymore-- I'm hoping to keep most any important information a player needs once they understand how everything works elsewhere. Hopefully down the road, I'll even be able to add support for...

Side-Write: Pointless Violence

A lot of the story behind Project Wild One is still up in the air-- the focus is largely on the system and the gameplay itself at this stage, and the necessities of what I'm designing here will guide a lot of what the game turns into as a story down the road. That does present some very interesting challenges, though-- rules of "how the world works" bring with them a lot of questions about what sort of world our characters are living in and how it influences their behavior.

So today's ...

Vote Now! MVOL needs ART!

I keep telling myself I need to get more art going again, as hard and stressful as that part of the whole process can be. This early in development, there's not a lot of art I can commission for my newer prototypes that I can be sure I'll actually use in the long run, but My Very Own Lith clearly still has a lot of scenes that could really use art!

The trouble is... there are still a LOT of scenes that could use art, and it can be tough to pick which ones really need or deserve it! So ...

Side-Write: Destruction by Choice

If we're being honest, part of why I decided I needed to get Project Voice shipped out before the end of the month was because I realized I had already done far too many side-writes about it by this point. Still, usually I'd do the side-write "about what I've been working on," but I don't have a lot more to say about Project Voice at this point.

Technically, Project Wild One also doesn't have a lot of established lore or world-building at this point either for me to expand on-- but I r...

Project Voice v0.01!

Update: Now available to the public! Enjoy!

It's finally here! The first iteration on my big experiment with voice acting is ready to go! You can get all the info about what's going on with this version of the game over here on my big announcement post. One important note is that the voice lines will stop coming rather suddenly after a point since I cut things short to get this v...

Dev Journal: Turning Point

Hmmm. I should have written this up a week ago. Not just because I've let more time elapse between these journals than the goals I set myself, but because about a week ago, I reached a turning point. As I've described, editing all this audio has been an endless, frustrating task, and while I picked up a few tricks to make it more bearable, it still only seemed to go slower and slower as I struggled to push through the sheer volume of it all, especially when all that work only produced so litt...

Side-Write: Perfect Problem

One more time, I had to ask myself what to do for this side-write given Project Voice isn't super heavy on the lore compared to a lot of my work. The setting is basically "somewhere around 2005 but furries." Last time I explored the design questions behind why I designed the player character the way I did, and before that I explored their possible past.

I'd been considering doing something similar for the other character in Project Voice, David, but I don't want to go too much into his...

Dev Journal: Hot and Bothered

I was shocked when I checked and found that it's been a month since my last dev journal, so I'd like to apologize for that! The work has been simultaneously so absorbing and so frustrating that it's messed with my sense of time to some extent, I think. I honestly didn't expect this project to challenge me nearly as much as it has, but I'm still moving forward.

In just about every aspect of the project, things are coming together day by day, but I have to admit, I've run into so many pr...

Warmth in Darkness

Things have slowed down some recently on the art side of things, it's been a while since we had a fresh preview! Project Voice is going to have a very minimalistic aesthetic, but I knew I'd need one solid centerpiece to tie everything together, and after a lot of fiddling with it with Leslongxia, I'm pretty happy with how this has turned out! It has a few alt bits, and actually mapping "hot zones" like we see here to the b...

Side-Write: Player and Character

Project Voice doesn't have a lot of deep lore behind it to delve into for these pieces, so this leaves me with space for getting a little more open-ended with these side-writes. I was thinking about topics related to the story and realized that I'm trying some new stuff with the player character in Project Voice that maybe deserves exploration.

Like a couple months ago, I'm hoping this will both offer up some insight for you guys into how the games come together and help me straighten ...

Side-Write: A Magical Childhood

I usually try to offer some insight into the background and lore for the game I'm working on at the moment for these side-writes, even if it's mostly speculative or spitballing, and in this case I think it's pretty clear what that should be.

The player character in Project Voice is never officially given a name and mostly referred to as "you," but they do have some prominent personality features that I've tried to balance between feeling generic enough to be relatable and specific enou...

Dev Journal: Sound Mind

I have to say, out of the projects I've started, Project Voice has certainly been the strangest. And while Project Wild One was an immensely challenging experience to get going and I learned a great deal from it, PV (hm, that sounds odd) has challenged me in much more unusual ways.

Last month, a bit part of it was a question of content and direction. Usually this isn't a problem for me, but usually I start from the top-level idea I want to implement and work down from there, a...

Side-Write: Design Choices

Well, we're doing something pretty different for this one. Usually I try to focus on the story side of things and give some extra insight into what's going on with the game I'm currently working on on that side, but maybe moreso than any other game I've worked on, Project Voice doesn't have a notable setting to explore... more pressingly, the setting really hasn't been established at all. And that's a problem.

I was struggling to figure out what to do for this side write, but honestly,...

Project Matchmaker v0.02 Basic Cheats!

Edit: Updated for public release!

The new build is out and this time there's finally enough content that I think a few lil cheats will actually be worthwhile! With the Basic Cheats you start the game with the "bonus content" you'd be able to get at the very end of this update already unlocked. Usually you'd have to play through the whole scenario twice to see everything, but now you can get the game's first "upgrade" right from the start. Hope you enjoy!

The new build is out and this time there's finally enough content that I think a few lil cheats will actually be worthwhile! With the Super Cheats you basically get a new dialogue option early in the timeline that lets you skip from "just finished customizing characters" to "the action is getting hot and heavy," if and when you want to enjoy the sex scene ASAP. Hope you enjoy!

Side-Write: The Burden of Divinity

Well, it looks like this will be the last side-write themed for Project Matchmaker for a while at least, so I tried to figure out what would be a fitting thing to explore to round things out so far. And I realized that after last month's exploration of Saphron's people, something similar for Mala's people could fit nicely! This one does go rather in its own direction with it, of course, but I think they make a nice pair.

As always, this isn't officially canon so much as spitballing for...

Side-Write: Retrospective

So I've been focusing a lot on the emotional conflicts involved and the more intimate details between Saphron and Mala, but I've been deliberately avoiding getting into the details of the greater context around them. Partly because I hate naming things. But it's getting to a point where I probably shouldn't put it off any longer.

So today I decided this Side-Write would be a good time to really sit down and explore some background with Saphron's people, to actually put some names to th...

I really need to find a better way to work these into my routine. When I'm having a hard time pushing past a challenge I let myself push off doing a dev journal, partly since I feel like publicly admitting "this is hard D:" would be a hit to my personal motivation. Side-Write: Imperial Directive

Fresh off struggling with MVOL, I've been taking care of some side stuff, but my next goal is to start working on the next version of Matchmaker, so I've taken this month's Side-Write as a chance to refresh myself a little on that story and world, and reflect on the stories and implications that surround the characters.

I realized that, while I've done a few from the "side" of Saffron's species, we've seen very little from Mala's. Partly that's because some of their culture still needs...
