after a full day of working on string composition and eventually hitting a brick wall (the cello, and writing for cellists, and an overall idea i had for fugue that has been the silliest experiment i've ever started) i think i'll spend an hour or so sitting in silence with my cat this morning... maybe a good time to write comics? not that i'm not excited to return to coming up with solutions for songwriting problems i've created by overcomplicating entire sections. it's fun to mess things up....

first ever cd booklet

woke up pretty early and got to work right away on going over the new album's plot again (themed records and concept records are diligently organized by me, but i woke up with a fervor to edit and re-organize a key part of this album's narrative SO the middle of the album will definitely be different now than it was before) (apologies, rambling, it's 5am here)

i got images from mark at heartfelt records showcasing the work they've put into the new still bummed CD release's bookl...

piecing together videos from the making of WUOM in chronological order for patreon supporters and stumbling on old footage circa still bummed—still. so nostalgic.

it dawned on me i should probably begin filming more of the making of blue of the sea as well. I film something nearly everyday, but I suppose most of it is flowers i think are beautiful, or a squirrel barking into my window. I always considered the actual making of a nouns record to be somewhat boring, but it's occu...

kyle

kyle and i hanging out with my dad

i met kyle at a random show in late 2014; he said he needed a place to stay so i suggested he room with me at this house of 5 people. as soon as he moved in, we began jamming regularly and i realized he was just about the best bassist i'd ever played with. i asked him to record bass and vocals for the song "weird beard" (which i feel is the first real nouns song, sort of.) then i expressed my distaste for doing vocals live, and asked him to do t...

still using long division to make songs

i'm going to go for a walk today to clear my head, i hope all of you are doing well. the past two weeks have been fun, tracking for the middle of BotS and then re-writing many portions of it. i find most of what i write for an album will get edited out, and the process of filtering out what's necessary to the sound/story can take a minute. i do think people would find it funny to hear some of parts & songs that almost made it on pas...

talking with adam demirjian about mathcore

i listened to a brave little abacus record in the fall of 2021, after the release of lonely place of dyin. immediately i recognized that BLA and i shared many influences, especially given the time we all grew up in. i decided to reach out to adam demirjian and just talk shop for a while. there's tons of footage of us somewhere goofing off. this is an interesting tidbit where we both hone in on a specific band that changed the trajectory of our lives. hope everyone's doing well!

random journal entry

another long hour day of working.

hope i can make the sound i want.

it's weird how sound is always so hard to actually grasp.

you know.

going to ramble a bit, just for the sake of it. i don't mean to be self-interested, but i am tired, and i'm just in the mood for typing.

i was diagnosed obsessive compulsive as a teenager. i had spent 12 years prior obsessing over justice, health, sin, filth, you name it (thinking it fairly normal to loop thoughts a...

moving 10 years worth of accumulated gear to a new treated room, then the problem remains of how to record the rest of the vocals in the garage pictured

working on a video for the people, otherwise. fun times, friend

there's always recording vocals in the car, of course. someone once wanted to come film a documentary of the nouns recording process and i truly thought it would be boring, as most of recording an album involves sitting and staring at a computer screen for hours. i reckon the vocals would have interested someone though.

rest in peace Ozzman

I took an interest in music— hammering away on my dad's acoustic guitars— by the age of 3. My earliest memories are of him looping tracks by Esteban, attempting to gauge my interest in guitar. The first thing that truly took was Ozzy. Dad put a boombox in my room, and let me have his copy of The Ozzman Cometh. I bounced up and down on my bed, attempting to sing along to every word. Ozzy was my introduction to rock and roll, and my barometer for whether something was "real, heavy rock" or ...

first time nouns ever played live

it was the end of the night at a Blue House show in september of 2013. Elgin, Tyler and I had been playing together for about 2 weeks, and just happened to be at the show. People still wanted to dance and knew we were in a band, so they asked us to play a few songs for them, lol.

Mötörhead teaser trailer

while working on BLUE OF THE SEA, I've also been working on the score for Mötörhead, a film by JC Reams. Having a lot of fun with it so far, doing a ton of "field recording" AKA recording appliances around my home to use as instruments/recording the sound of me hitting a metal shed with a hammer, lol. Thinking about potentially releasing a video of the production process at some point, breaking down how I like to utilize sampling! Who knows? Hope everyone's having a beautiful day.
