With this one I was aiming to make it look as though the viewer is looking up at The Paramedic, who is stretching out his hand for support. It took a few attempts before I had something I was happy with, and I think the angle of the open ambulance also helps sell the perspective.

Then it started to merge with memories of yesterday; had that been a dream too? Laying on the beach with Yoichi, his chunky hands all over my swollen belly -

Pizza Palace was sorta off the beaten track, along the west harbor which was still new to me. Outside stood a plastic statue of the chain’s mascot, Sir Slice: a wedge of pizza with a face, bearing a sword and shield.

‘I know it seems kinda dorky,’ Yoichi told me as we sat down in a quiet booth near the back of the restaurant, ‘but I promise you this is the best pizza in town!’

As you can see, he very nearly had a beer in his other hand, but then as soon as I tried out the hand on his sizable hip instead, it just felt more Dad-like and balanced the picture better. I'm finding that sometimes these images can look a bit too contrived if the character is doing too many different things at once.  Some of the images I'm happy to make look more posed and pin-up-like, and then others I like to try and capture a feeling that we've caught the big man doing their thing i...

Since I moved to Cresthaven, I’ve been having this recurring memory making its way into my dreams. It’s of the first time Dad showed us how to woodwork. Bobby gave up almost right away, because of course he did - this was back when Bobby was still with us - but I took to it right there and then. Dad placed the little block of lumber in my small hands and said,

Sometimes I have a pretty clear vision in my head of how I want the image to look - which pose the big man will adopt, what kind of background elements to include - and this was one of them, so it didn't take me too much time to work it up from the rough draft (except for his hand holding the binoculars which I must have redrawn like 60 times).

As you can see from the sketches, I initially played with showing this big fella from the front. However, I wanted at least one guy in this book to show off his massive rump, and The Mechanic seemed like a good fit! I always want to try and show off interesting poses for these guys, not just 'camera straight ahead, guy facing forward', and try and set the tone somewhere between 'sexy pin-up' and 'actually doing their job'.
