Sneak Peek (Art Book): The Fisherman

"The call of the sea is strange and strong. Its pull has kept The Fisherman out on the ocean most of his life. He’s seen deckhands come and go, often sacking off this difficult job for some easier land-based task, but this big man wouldn’t have it any other way. Give him the spray of salt in the air, the cries of gulls wheeling through the open sky, and an endless blue horizon. Land might be where he sleeps, but the sea will always be his true home."

The Paramedic: Color

With this one I was aiming to make it look as though the viewer is looking up at The Paramedic, who is stretching out his hand for support. It took a few attempts before I had something I was happy with, and I think the angle of the open ambulance also helps sell the perspective.

Dadbod, part 7

Thumpthumpthump!

I was in a dream about Dunston, my hometown. Mom and Dad were there, Bobby too, exactly as I remembered him. Angel was in there somewhere, also.

Then it started to merge with memories of yesterday; had that been a dream too? Laying on the beach with Yoichi, his chunky hands all over my swollen belly -

Thumpthumpthump!

Mmm?

My eyes took a moment to open. ...

FATPOP: Zapp Brannigan

Hey guys, I'm sorry it's taken so long to get the next FATPOP out the gate. There have been quite trying times here at Lokitu HQ for a while now.

Let's get your suggestions in for the next pop culture character to receive the Lokitu treatment! As before - It has to be a fictional character, and to make my life easier please stick to one suggestion each.

Happy Suggesting!

Sneak Peek (Art Book): The Paramedic

"The Paramedic shows up on the scene and asks ‘What appears to be the problem?’

The patient can only stare wide-eyed in awe.

‘Uhhh,’ he begins.

The Paramedic works long hours and hard shifts, oftentimes driving the ambulance all through the night. He’s encountered this before.

‘Got knocked down? Had a fall?’ he asks, surprisingly gentle for a huge brute such as he.

The patient is still staring, apparently forgetting what was ...

Pizza Palace was sorta off the beaten track, along the west harbor which was still new to me. Outside stood a plastic statue of the chain’s mascot, Sir Slice: a wedge of pizza with a face, bearing a sword and shield.

‘I know it seems kinda dorky,’ Yoichi told me as we sat down in a quiet booth near the back of the restaurant, ‘but I promise you this is the best pizza in town!’

Here's an early look at the latest commission I'm working on. I usually show the sketch phase for Sneak Peeks, but this will be a full-color commission, so I thought I'd show this outline phase for a change.

The Dad: Color

As you can see, he very nearly had a beer in his other hand, but then as soon as I tried out the hand on his sizable hip instead, it just felt more Dad-like and balanced the picture better. I'm finding that sometimes these images can look a bit too contrived if the character is doing too many different things at once.  Some of the images I'm happy to make look more posed and pin-up-like, and then others I like to try and capture a feeling that we've caught the big man doing their thing i...

Bear Viking: Color Edition

I've gone back and added color to this previous commission. It was quite tricky to 'unpick' my older work here, since I'd added layers of depth in my original file.

Dadbod, part 5

Since I moved to Cresthaven, I’ve been having this recurring memory making its way into my dreams. It’s of the first time Dad showed us how to woodwork. Bobby gave up almost right away, because of course he did - this was back when Bobby was still with us - but I took to it right there and then. Dad placed the little block of lumber in my small hands and said,

‘Picture what it is you want...

Sometimes I have a pretty clear vision in my head of how I want the image to look - which pose the big man will adopt, what kind of background elements to include - and this was one of them, so it didn't take me too much time to work it up from the rough draft (except for his hand holding the binoculars which I must have redrawn like 60 times).

Shotha - Coat of Arms

My most recent commission was certainly something different for me. Shotha wanted his own unique coat of arms to represent the different aspects of his life. It was fun to work on something a little bit unusual on this one!

The Mechanic: Color

As you can see from the sketches, I initially played with showing this big fella from the front. However, I wanted at least one guy in this book to show off his massive rump, and The Mechanic seemed like a good fit! I always want to try and show off interesting poses for these guys, not just 'camera straight ahead, guy facing forward', and try and set the tone somewhere between 'sexy pin-up' and 'actually doing their job'.
