Art Batch (2022)

And now that I've posted everything from last year, I can post the 2022 art batch! What can I say -- last year sucked. An abundance of life shit to sort out and a general lack of inspiration meant very little art got done. Around the start of the year I made a commitment to getting back on track, and thanks to some improved consistency with my art time and balancing dedicated practice with creative drawing, I had a lot of success pulling myself out of that rut.

It was a good year for pr...

Art Batch (2021)

So, somehow I've been really negligent and simply didn't post the 2021 art batch. Better late than never, right? That year, I continued on from the tea room scene with Juno and Kipper, making it a full date for the lucky pair. This was also when I got my first exposure to Clip Studio Paint, definitely taking advantage of the available brushes right away and creating the "Mink" piece. I wish I had kept up with using CSP instead of retreating back to SAI, because I really liked how it turned ou...

Hyaenodon

Another prehistoric mammal, and one of my favorites -- Hyaenodon horridus. They lived from the Eocene through the Miocene, this species inhabiting North America. They belong to a group of mammals that used to be called creodonts (now placed in Hyaenodonta) separate from but evolving alongside members of the order Carnivora.

I've been sketching out a lot more Hyaenodons, so don't be surprised if they show up again. It's really neat playing around with the kind of prehistoric wor...

Dinocrocuta

Finally uploading this piece I did last year during some experiments with prehistoric species -- experiments that I've continued, for those interested in extinct critters!

Dinocrocuta was a genus of large, vaguely hyena-like carnivores that lived during the Miocene. They're classified in the feliform clade along with actual hyenas, but there are no surviving members of their family. Oh, and their skulls are massive o.o

Sun-kissed

Even as the unusually warm summer keeps me from getting out into nature as much as I'd hoped, Juno can still do it for me. This time with Lapso's ferret, Charlie. Just as well she's no more shy than the fox about feeling the grass all over her fur.

When I was a kid I'd be out in the sun all the damn time, and we were lucky enough to have some really cool areas to explore. Nowadays, there's a lot of green spac...

Summer in the City

Juno isn’t much of a skater herself, but with the right kind of friend to loan her a board and show her the basics, it’s fun enough to get her out of the apartment and enjoying the summer. Their town has a vibrant naturist district where they’re free to hang out and surf the pavement in whatever clothing they like, including none at all. But with a little absent-minded wandering they managed to end up a couple blocks outside this sanctioned clothing-optional zone. Even so, taking a brea...

Beer Run

Just a quick run into town to pick up some essentials. You gotta cope with these southern summers in whatever way you can >.<

Baron03 shot me his concept for a swamp-dwelling raccoon, who he even wrote a short story about. This ended up becoming both a 'thank you' for all the writing he's done inspired by my characters and artwork, as well as a small birthday surprise.

I honestly wish we had more ra...

Saint

A savior to those lost and stranded on the near edge of the vast icy tundra, Saint surveys her snowy surroundings. If she looks a little grumpy, this is normal. She didn't inherit her mother's friendliness when it comes to client-side interfacing type stuff, but she takes her work very seriously all the same. Her collar houses radio communication hardware while her belt and harness can both carry field pouches and pull a rescue sled.

I'd be withholding if I didn't say this calls back to...

Saint (WIPs)

Remember that wolf medic? After some equipment studies I refined their look and sketched out another one of them, Saint. Her gear is a little more trimmed down and practical, again favoring her natural adaptations to the tundra. While she's not the kind of wolf to show up to a rescue with milk and cookies in hand, you can bet she will show up.

Relics

Aleutia's been digging for bones in the coastal forests and made quite the find. This is a tribute to her habit of collecting skulls and various other animal parts. And a 'thank you' for not stinking up the apartment too much in the process x3

Today is her birthday, so wish her a good one if you feel like it! I don't always manage to create artistic gifts for loved ones, but I prefer it to just about anything else I could give.

Weasel and a Skull (WIPs)

The weasel may already be recognizable to some of you as Aleutia, who's found a nice new skull to add to her collection. These are a series of works in progress from initial sketch to some linework that will make it into the final piece. Most of my drawings undergo a similar process, but I don't always save copies along the way -- there was an even rougher thumbnail this evolved from, but I don't have...

Hot Tea

The night is hazy, the air pounds, and the tea is a perfect temperature. No problem at all for a fire-wielding fennec.

Inspired by iPoke and the fire fennecs that show up here and there in his work, even if they're not always fire-y. My favorite may be this one (nsfw). With the cold, wet weather we've been having, I natural...

"How'd you get so biiiig!"

The fall colors are everywhere and not likely to get covered by snow around here. The reds, the oranges... the pinks I guess. And in the middle of it all, a rare four-legged Juno who seems to be acting just like her normal self somehow x)

Happy Fall! Even if you're well into it!

Vap Island

Somewhere in the Seafoam Islands, the Vaporeon have chosen this rock as their meeting place.

Not my usual fare, but I do love these guys and their fat tails x3 When I'm feeling down, Pokemon art is strangely uplifting -- maybe it's the low stakes and boundless optimism. And what started as some Vaporeon doodling quickly turned into a pile of em.

Mink

Hopefully the color has done something to improve the sketch. I REALLY enjoyed giving her some lighting, in part because CSP made it feel surprisingly easy and organic.

Thank you for being patient with me posting the finished piece. I was getting all prepared for my first vacation of the year (and wow do I need it). Only problem was this vacation happened to be in Florida just when the first hurricane of the season was making landfall... The vacation will have to wait a couple more week...

Mink (WIP)

Mink love the water, right? This one's gonna be wading about thigh deep in pursuit of dinner, and I'm assuming her fur is doing its part in keeping her warm.

I do pretty much all my digital work in Painttool SAI, but this is a little excursion into Clip Studio Paint. It's taking a little figuring out, but the program is much more fully featured than what I'm used to. For a lot of simple tasks I need to swap files between SAI and PS, but this could make that unnecessary. How nice would t...

The Last Day of Summer

Even though it leaves her prone to being caught off-guard, I envy her for being the kind of fox who enjoys things at the time, rather than having to go back and enjoy them in her head.

The very first sketch for this was spontaneous enough -- just Juno with a hotdog in one hand and a beer in the other. Playing around with some color thumbnails, feeling around for the mood, and soon enough I had a full piece planned out. I'm no purist when it comes to hotdog toppings, so I just slapped to...

Summertime Juno (WIPs)

I'm behind on posting -- here and especially in my public galleries. I know I don't have a "schedule" to adhere to exactly, but usually I'm getting enough productive creative time in my life that it balances out pretty well and I usually have a couple finished pictures to show for myself every month. This year hasn't been going that way. The time I've been carving out for artwork has usually been less productive than I'm used to, but that instead means it's gone more into study sketches and l...

Fat Tails

Lots has been happening behind the scenes, and funny enough that includes art. My own tail has a tendency to get tugged in lots of directions but any day I can sit down and draw is a good day as far as I'm concerned. Luckily I have some pictures to share, the first of which is a sketch of an arctic fox who doesn't show up nearly often enough.

So, Anastasia is a statistician by training though back when I was drawing her a lot I tried out different character backgrounds ...

Wolf Medic

I draw a lot more foxes than any other canid, and as a result everything else I draw kinda looks like a fox. So to fill in some of the gaps, I started sketching wolves; you know, to try and make them look wolf-y instead of fox-y. A bit of messing around and I ended up drawing such a girl in the role of an arctic field medic equipped for long overland excursions.

I stand convinced, wolves are kinda cool. And fun to draw. Now I want to refine the look of her gear . . .

Thanks to Skyler Ragnarok for letting me have some fun with his characters. Also uploading a PSD for this one since it's got pretty minimal and potentially comprehensible layering.

A gift for an awesome coyote (and like, absolute queen of cookies).

Toots is one of those artists whose work I've known for years before the stars suddenly aligned and I met her in person. She kills it with a colored pencil like I never could and renders fur with the best of em. I could go on for a while about how both she and her mate are truly awesome people, but when this whole social-dis...

Coyote Girl

On a warm night, when the bonfire is blazing, she'll steal just a spark and trace her dance through the air.

Consider this some dance practice. For years, this coyote girl lived in my mind, spinning fire and yipping away. Always in that collar and loincloth. But she managed to work her way into this piece a few years ago, as well as 2021-04-01 03:45:18 +0000 UTC View Post
