"HEY, UH, I KIND OF THOUGHT THIS WAS JUST A QUIZ SHOW??? AM I GONNA GET LIGHTNING AND STUFF THROWN AT ME TOO 'CAUSE I'M NOT SURE HOW I FEEL ABOUT THAT."

You know the best way to get kids into the idea of a history quiz show?

FILL IT WITH MAGIC VIOLENCE

Man, this game looks fun, I wonder what kind of questions we-OH UM. THAT SEEMS A BIT MUCH.

One of my favorite aspects of the thumbnails stage is that, in visualizing the pages properly, it makes me realize certain details I'd neglected to consider.

In this case, it occurred to me that the Quizard would probably, logically, be reading questions from some kind of "cue card" or equivalent thing. That sparked the idea of his holo-tablet being in the form of a scroll.

A minor detail, of course, but I'd like to think little things like that really add up to giving a lived-in ...

In fairness, Leon being able to tell this neo-cat dude "I'm the whole reason you even had the gene-editing technology you and your tecktrin used in the first place" would have been a pretty difficult thing to beat.

Beyond doing more exciting framing, I'm trying to get better at staging panels such that, whenever possible, I'm avoiding "dead space" in panels. To that end, I'm going to try and be more willing to have characters overlap and stick out of panels. Extra fitting for such a dynamic scene as this duel!

Anyways, it looks like Leon's getting into the spirit of things as well!

A new challenger appears!!!

It's fun to have an excuse to play around with cool framing. This particular scene is probably my favorite in the chapter, and we'll really get to appreciate why as it goes on.

"Titles" /can/ be a useful shorthand for pronouns, but of course it's not a perfect system. It may require clarification and/or specification in some circumstances.

Of course if you're Leon, you might take that opportunity to provide pronouns AND flex about your intelligence.

Didn't realize until it actually came time for making thumbnails that I didn't properly plan a full-body shot of this new character, the Quizard. Which would have been a shame, since he was an incredibly fun character to design.

Well at least Luca seems excited

We begin a new scene! Really starting to play around with perspective and framing now. Kinda have to, what with that weird elevator blocking a good view of the stairs.

Oh, also Luca seems excited about someone!

Leon may be the best, but even he is capable of some off-days.

CW: Implied vomiting

Fun fact: it wasn't until the thumbnailing stage that I had the idea to have Luca eat the wrapper the medicine came in. I /could/ have just had her throw it away, but this was way funnier to me.

Virtually every single-use wrapper is made of biodegradable material, of course, but Tecktrins have the capacity to eat just about anything, so...

In which the pair can stop worrying about whatever was on their mind a few moments ago and just enjoy the ride :)

Oh, neat, the [REDACTED] learned a new trick!

Wait what were we talking about?

A consensus is reached. And this time, it seems like it's for good.

Huh... why /would/ white bubbles like that feel familiar?

Luca's /technically/ tall enough for the ride if you count her ears

It's a good thing I finally figured out how the carts look

Anyway, as usual, Luca seems anxious. I'm sure she's fine though.

In THE FUTURE, waiting in lines is a thing of the past. NOW, we build mobile carrier cars to comfortably bring you to the places you want to visit.

Also, fun fact: those black beams coming out of the top of the Fair's tower? They produce a holo-barrier network around everything to help keep debris from the nearby trees and rain from falling in.

One thing I'm learning a lot about is how to handle things being at different angles/perspectives. It's A LOT to keep track of, beyond all of the setting stuff I'm already trying to account for

Yeah, Leon, OBVIOUSLY. Jeez, you're acting like you literally just woke up in the future today or something.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the cart for this ride, yet still didn't actually figure it out until a few thumbnail pages from now.

But we'll see more of the actual Fair development drawings at the end of the chapter!
