It only took 206 pages for Leon to finally be wearing the poncho he's seen wearing during all of the promo materials.

I had a lot of thoughts about how Leon would end up with it. Originally, I was just going to have them come across it while making their way somewhere... after Leon found one Luca HATED and brought this one up instead as a compromise.

I'm much happier with this context for it.

I'm still working out how to handle night scenes. I feel I went overboard in some spots and underboard in others. Ah well, part of the learning process. I've got another good hundred or two pages of night scenes to practice with coming up.

Anyway shoutout to Riiser and Legally Distinct Niko Oneshot for their cameos on this page. Riiser was the first to cover my comic back when it was a hundred pages shorter than it is now, and there have certainly been a few changes since then! Maybe I'...

I'm always self-conscious about characters talking (or in this case, thinking) too long without anything really "happening." Which I personally think is a good trait to have, working in comics!

While Leon was separated, I worked out a game for him to be playing. Which naturally meant I had to literally design a fully-functional game for him to be enjoying for the like... three pages it shows up on. Probably not even in a completely visible way. Because I'm Extra like that.

I had a LOT of fun working on the night scene here. I sure hope that trend continues because, spoilers, there's gonna be a lot of night stuff coming up.

This game went through a lot of iterations. Once I knew I wanted something garbage-themed, I thought it would be fun to play around with the structure shape by having it take place in a garbage truck-themed place.

Hard to make that look good, but nothing wrong with a challenge.

Welp, KttFF is now /officially/ my longest ever comic. All is right with the world.

To celebrate, it looks like Leon plans to do a bit of Secret Research.

At least Luca's still having a good time... Leon, on the other hand, still seems distressed by something...

I always know it's gonna be a complex page when my thumbnail details go more than a single page.

I'm /trying/ to be smarter about what I focus on in terms of detail, especially since I'll be spending one (1) whole panel seeing these fighting game characters, but thinking them up was just so fun. Originally, I was just gonna cameo two of my tabletop characters or something... but in hindsight, we've already got three other cameos on this page.

The ref is gonna be designed after the...

Getting to change out the constant glowing effects and weird mind stuff for constant background noise is going to be... better, I think? Guess we'll find out!

I'm at least looking forward to the time transition anyway.

Oh, uh, Luca, maybe let's not go overboard here...

Well okay that last part is completely correct but we might wanna reconsider the other things.

The consolation prize

Originally this was going to have four panels... but then I had the smart idea to just make the last panel take up half the page. It's both less AND more to draw.

I'm probably also doing WAY more work than is actually needed trying to space everything out in the Fair, as well as the sun's relative angle and stuff. Meanwhile I'll still have tons of background characters and buildings to handle pretty much on the spot.

SIGH.

Looks like Leon's gonna be taking quite a few "L"s today

I was really on a roll here with my thumbnails... but on this page, I realized I hadn't thought about in my script what the pair /do/ with the pins the Quizard gives them.

But it worked out! It gave me a little moment of Luca putting the pin on her bag. Leon's just gonna have to hold onto his for a hot second, though.

One of my favorite pages for one of my favorite parts. The "tapestry of contradictions" line hit me like a truck when scripting, and being able to combine that with the weird overlapping mountains imagery has been one of the highlights of this chapter.

Plus I just thought it'd be an incredibly funny idea for this train without tracks to be driven with a regular car wheel. AND we get to briefly talk to Leon's Unconscious Mind! Not that he has anything useful to say.

AND IF ALL OF T...

The battle is lost...

I know I keep tooting my own horn about it, but I'm seriously proud about how well I'm managing to use up the space in the panels. And I'm feeling more confident about including more variety of angles. I'm starting to think I might be okay at this whole comics thing.

Lads, if you're making a story and miss a chance to put in cool dream/brain sequences, you won't be able to forgive yourselves.

Also getting a chance to test out angles once again. From now on, no more than three characters per panel. So much to keep track of.

The third panel's dialogue is one of my favorite bits of writing I've ever done.

Also I've gotta find a way to include more chances to use trippy brainspaces in my stories. I LOVE how wild, yet meaningful, you can get with this stuff.

Don't be such a downer, uh... other Leon in Leon's head?? I'm sorry whomst are you when did you get invited here?

Even on pages with fewer panels, trying to effectively space out the dialogue can be a challenge. I envy comics that have mastered the art of leading the eye through both their art and bubble placement.

Absolutely love the framing in this one. Not an ounce of wasted space.

Which is good for any page that's got nine panels in it.

I'm getting better about not just using the first angle I envision in my head! I want to try and use a little more variety in my shots than just static medium shots, even for primarily talky scenes.

Went through a lot of revision during the thumbnail page to make this joke work. In the script, I hadn't considered as much how the audience reaction could fit into getting Leon to play along.

God I love this scene.

I feel like I'm getting too comfortable going with my first idea for my thumbnails sometimes, especially with this page. The whole point of thumbnails is to avoid committing to something by quickly testing out multiple variations of concepts. I'm gonna try to be less perfectionist with my upcoming thumbnails.

Also, we're dipping our toes into introducing my OTHER favorite aspect of this scene: the personification of Leon's mind.
