Alternate Paladin v2.0

Hello all! As I move through a pretty large wave of updates for my “half-caster” classes (Alt Ranger, Magus, Alt Paladin), I think enough time has passed to do an update for my Alternate Paladin Class.

This class is still relatively early in its development, so I’m eager to hear what you all think of this latest version. Let me know in the comments!

ALTERNATE PALADIN v2.0.0

Divine Fervor. This new resource for the Paladin (replacing the “Harness Oath” feature) comes online with your Sacred Oath at 1st level. Each Sacred Oath has a unique use for the this resource at 1st level, and as you gain levels, it fuels Oath’s signature Smite, and many other subclass and class features!

Divine Smite. The damage type of your Divine Smite now changes to match your Paladin’s alignment (or your general moral outlook if you don’t use alignment). Now you can play your Paladin without being a good-aligned divine emissary.

Divine Regeneration. A new feature to help alleviate the Paladin’s reliance on a low number of spell slots for their signature feature (SMITE).

Aura of Protection. I have relented and reverted the base AoP effect to add your CHA mod to creature’s saving throws… We shall see if I keep this with all the other buffs for the class this time around.

Aura of Conviction. A new feature at 18th level to really allow you to support your allies’ saving throws in battle.

Paladin Spells. In case you missed it, all of my New and Alternate Paladin spells have been moved to one spot - my Spell Compendium.

Sacred Oaths. Not a lot of large changes here - mostly they have been reworked around the new Divine Fervor resource. Ancients 1st level feature has changed to allow them to be more of a tank, and the Blackguard, based on the Oathbreaker from the Dungeon Master’s Guide has been added!

That makes sense, unfortunately I never received the drive when I became a patron. Where do I find it?

I changed a little bit - the updated Oath of the Righteous Fist is in the Patron Google Drive

Hey laserllama, does this update change anything for the oath of the fist Paladin? Do their channel divinities change in resource expenditure or is it a direct conversion from harness oath to divine fervor ?

BC Carter

I like the changing damage type of Smites, helps flavor a paladin much more. The only thing I sometimes lack is a better ability to draw attacks towards them instead of their allies, as Command and Compel Duel seem costly for what it only might do given the often lower spell saving throw Pallies have. It seems to be the signature thing for a classic redemption Paladin yet Ancestral Guardian Barbs do it much better for instance. Are you ever planning to do one for Cleric/Druid/Wizard, or do you think the official classes are good enough as is?

I like some of the changes. Divine regeneration is great. I preferred "harness oath" in place of divine fervor. I feel like divine is used alot to name paladins abilities and that's fine, but I slip up or mix them up a lot. Im not a fan of the reversion of the aura. And I'm glad to see Lay on Hands is still a subclass feature. Paladins in 5e felt like they had the answers to everything, and they were powerful damage dealers. Your paladin felt more focused and made more sense thematically. I'm still using the 1.2 version of the abilities in my games. I but I'm looking forward to seeing how the paladin grows.

Instead of Divine Regeneration i would suggest to make it they can do smite at the highest level ,they can do at the time, a number of times equal to their proficiency bonus or charisma modifier without using spell slots per long rest
